Vundo Trojan - still lurking?

Unread postby glostagal » December 25th, 2008, 8:08 am

I was infected on Monday Dec 22nd. I was talking on the phone while googling so I probably clicked something I shouldn't have.... I'm usually so careful but it only takes once, I guess.

At first my problems were severe - windows automatic update was disabled, as was macafee virus scan, and I couldn't enable them; moreover, firefox and IE just kept opening windows - which I kept closing - I felt like I was playing whack-a-mole.

I eventually found this advice: http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/showthread.php?t=223656 and as a result, installed superantispyware. The first two times I ran it, it quarantined "trojans" and "adware" and after that, my big problems listed above were all resolved. But superantispyware scans continue to quarantine items of "unknown origin" and I'm wondering if my problems really are resoloved or not? So I have installed/executed Hijack This and my log is posted below. NOTE: I *did* click "Analyze This" after executing Hijack This. (I ran the tool *before* signing onto your board and seeing your advice to the contrary. I hope I haven't made things worse.)

MANY thanks to you for taking the time to review my situation. Best regards, Ellen F. Gloucester MA USA

Hello glostagal,

Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

McAfee
Symantec

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them.
----------------------------------------------
As i can only see some signs on Symantec, i assume that there are remainants of an older installation. Please use the link below to completely remove Symantec from your pc.

REMOVE NORTON

ONLY if you don't have an active subscription, use below link to uninstall Norton.

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for your own version.
----------------------------------------------
I need some information from you.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.netvibes.com/|https://my.usf ... ameset.jsp

Did you set this line as your Start page? Do you recognise the links in that line?

Also do you know what this file is?

ukthen.dll

Does it remind you anything?
----------------------------------------------
Disable SUPERAntiSpyware until the computer is clean
  • Right-click on the shortcut from the system tray
  • Choose View Control Center (preferences/options)
  • On the General and Startup tab, uncheck Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts.
  • Click Close to exit.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.
----------------------------------------------
Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image
Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
SDFix report.
Combofix report.
A new HijackThis log.

Yikes, now I'm really nervous.

I removed Norton (thought it WAS removed... thanks). I disabled superantispyware per your directions. I downloaded sdfix and executed it and I got the following message.

I am afraid to continue - please advise!!! thank you!

Thanks, let me make sure I understand. Here are the steps I will take:

1) go offline
2) disable antivirus
3) run sdfix
4) reboot in safe mode, run Runthis.bat per your instructions - save report.txt
5) go back online and download combofix
6) disable antivirus and antispyware (latter should already be disabled)
7) run combofix per your instructions - save combofix.txt
8) enable antivirus and spyware?
9) run hjt and save log
10) post logs from steps 4, 7, and 9 back here.
11) turn spyware back on.

By the way, I forgot to answer your questions - YES those are my startup pages (although I almost never use IE - usually I use firefox) and NO I do not recognize ukthen.dll.

THANKS, Glostagal

Hi,

I want you to save in Notepad, all the instructions for SDFix and Combofix.

I am changing what you posted, and explaining what to do.
  1. go offline << Yes
  2. disable antivirus << This is not needed, your Anti-Virus doesn't work in safe mode. Probably you tried to run SDFix in normal mode and your Anti-Virus gave you that warning.
  3. reboot in safe mode, (run SDFix) run Runthis.bat per your instructions - save report.txt
(You already run the installer and installed the tool)
  4. go back online and download combofix
  5. disable antivirus and antispyware (latter should already be disabled)
  6. run combofix per your instructions - save combofix.txt
  7. enable antivirus << Yes, it will normally be enabled after Combofix reboots the pc. and spyware? << Not untill we finish cleaning your pc.
  8. run hjt and save log
  9. post logs from steps 4, 7, and 9 back here. << Post all three reports.
  10. turn spyware back on. << No, see 7.

Thanks I am going to go offline and do this now.

Yes, I *did* run sdfix in normal mode, your instructions didn't say otherwise.

This is part of my previous instuctions, no harm done though :)

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Then it explains how to run SDFix ;)

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode ....

I want to be sure that you understand what happened. It was during the Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% part that I got the error. This part comes before the safe boot part. :bom:

NOW I have a new problem. I booted up in safe mode and found that SDFIX.EXE was gone (I downloaded it to my desktop but it is no longer there....) So I rebooted, reconnected to the internet, came back to this site to downolad sdfix.exe again and..... the tool is no longer on Andy's download site!!! :pale: what now?

Thanks, Ellen

Hi,

Yes that's why i told you to disable your Anti-Virus before double-click to install SDFix.

Check if it's here:
C:\SDFix if it's not retry.

I just visited the Andy's link and it works.
http://downloads.andymanchesta.com/Remo ... /SDFix.exe

Try with IE please. Maybe FF creates a problem.

IE worked. (the first time I downloaded it I *did* use FF but it really isn't working now - I'm not being dumb here :D

Thanks, I'm off to safe mode.
