Spybot S&D download/MajorGeeks ads

Unread postby JimW » April 6th, 2005, 12:54 pm

Last night in this thread at Dell, I posted a link to the Spybot/AdAware discussion in the public library.

From what followed in the thread, I think the user got trapped in MajorGeeks' deceptive ad that precedes the Spybot download, and downloaded Spyware Doctor instead. As a result, the user complained that she had to pay money to get the spyware removed. So far, I haven't been able to get her to explain what she actually did, but I suspect that was the scenario.

Is there somewhere else we can send people for this download, or should we just add some language about not falling victim to MajorGeeks.com's advertising?

Chris,

All my canned speeches currently point to the library document at malwareremoval.com, http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13, for download and usage instructions.

I wonder if you should consider changing the download link in that document to point somewhere else? I think this is the second time I've been involved with a situation where someone clicked on the MajorGeeks ad.

Do you think that perhaps uncritically clicking on links might have something to do with why they needed to download Spybot in the first place? :D

Thank you! I hate it when somebody accuses me of causing them to spend $50 on something I never suggested in the first place!

I tried to do a direct download from NI but it is stopped - so I have given them that link to all the mirrors.

I wonder if they'd let you become a mirror site?

"Walk, don't Run"? That would be an interesting "Ventures" ... :)

deceptive ad?

Unread postby brian5028fagan » April 12th, 2005, 2:13 am

anyone can accuse or sue.

that incident is not your fault but the user.

but it is difficult to tell a user that without them being offended.

Brian,

The problem isn't one of liability, but of the spread of misinformation. If a user claims to have been forced to purchase a product because of the way a download site's advertising works, and doesn't even report that the product they downloaded wasn't the product they were asked to download, there's a risk that other people will misinterpret the poster's complaint as being about the product, rather than the site.
