Hi Donna, we are almost done, just a little more. Just take your time and get everything right.

Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Display icon -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web tab

Uncheck and delete everything you find in there (except for "My current home page").

Also remove the checkmark from the the "Lock Desktop Items" box if it is checked.
Click OK.
Click Apply and OK to exit the Display properties.

NEXT

Please print out or save this set of instructions as you will not have internet access during the fix.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode by following the instructions below:

  1. When you hear the computer beeps once, start pressing F8.
  2. A boot menu will appear shortly.
  3. Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
  4. Windows will now load.
  5. Log in to your usual account.

Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.

:Remove bad HijackThis entries:
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

O24 - Desktop Component AutorunsDisabled: (no name) - (no file)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

REBOOT your computer

NEXT

  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.

NEXT

Please now delete rsit.exe and any remaining logs from your Desktop (not OTmoveIt3.exe), also delete this folder:
Code box:
C:\rsit

Re: Hijack this file can't get rid of PrcViewer

Unread postby flashh4 » December 30th, 2008, 9:37 pm

Hi Donna, ok locate the Fixme.reg on your desktop and delete it. Empty recycle bin.

NEXT

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document. (You must use Notepad, NOT Wordpad). Make sure that you have NO blank lines at the beginning of the document before REGEDIT4, and ONE blank line at the end of the document as shown in the quoted text:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{3CC3D8FE-F0E0-4dd1-A69A-8C56BCC7BEC0}]

Save it to your desktop as Fixme.reg. Save it as follows...
File Type: "All Files" (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: Fixme.reg

Locate Fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the merged successfully prompt.

Post a new HJT log

Thanks
Chuck

Hi Donna, as we have no way of knowing what may have been responsible for compromising your credit card data last October,
nor do we know the nature of the malware that was removed by McAfee during their cleaning process, we cannot fully ascertain the security status of your system.
Short of a reformat of the hard drive and a reinstallation of the operating system, there is no way that anyone can be entirely certain that no vulnerabilities remain on your computer.
However, as far as we can tell, your system appears to be clean at this time. We would therefore advise you to exercise extreme caution in any/all financial transactions and if you see an indication that anything is amiss, it would be prudent to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the operating system at that point.

The remaining O9 entry has been very stubborn, which is not too unusual. However, as SmartShopper has been removed, this remaining orphaned registry entry would do no harm, so there is no real need to pursue the removal of this final remnant.

When you permit a site to be in your Trusted Zone, you are pretty much giving it full access to your computer. Unless you deliberately placed McAfee in your Trusted Zone, and/or must have it there in order to access their site, you are strongly advised to remove it from the Trusted Zone by fixing the following entry with HijackThis as we have done with other deleted lines:

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com

...........................................................

Next we remove all used tools.

You can delete rsit and c:\rsit folder.

Clean up with OTMoveIt3:

* Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
* Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt2 as this step will require a reboot
* On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
* Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

............................................................

Since you already have Malwarebytes' installed i would keep this valuable tool. I run mine a few times a week to check my computer for anything it may have picked up.
You can continue to manually update and use MBAM as an on demand scanner.
There is also an upgrade to the paid version.
Instructions on use:
Click/open Malwarebytes' on your desk top, click the Update tab, click the box check for updates, use the option "perform quick scan".
# When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
# Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected

.............................................................

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

* Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
* Select Create a restore point then Next, type a name like All Clean, press the Create button. Once it's finished, press Close.
* Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr and press OK.
* Select the More options tab.
* Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
    Secunia Software Inspector
    F-secure Health Check

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupda ... ankspage=5 regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Chuck,

Thank you for all your help, and I feel 100% better and safer now. MacFee's last routine scan's showed the PrcView in (C:\RECYCLER\S+++)with the option to remove or trust. I opted for remove which was indicated as incomplete. Macfee stated no action required. I am glad to have had the opportunity to learn of all the available websites and tools, and I will definitely follow your guidelines. Thank you so very much
