Spyaxe Again

Unread postby nightingayle » December 3rd, 2005, 10:17 pm

Hi, I removed the spyaxe using the noah spyaxefix, but there's still random porn popups and the odd fake warning. This is my dad's computer and he can't quite tell the fake warning from the real, eek!

Anyway, hijackthis logfile below. Help please, thank you!!!

nightingayle

Hello again, nightingayle

I understand you ran the fix created by noahdfear but still have some problems.
Let's start from the top and work our way down :)

If there's anything that you don't understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding with the fixes.
There should not be any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.
You will want to copy out these instructions and save them to notepad as you will not have internet connection during the fix.
Save the notepad to your desktop where you can find it.

I need for you to download some programs. Do not use them until directed to do so.

Go to: http://download.ewido.net/ewido-setup.exe
" Install Ewido Security Suite
" When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
o Install background guard
o Install scan via context menu
" Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
" On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
" Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/updates/
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Go: here to download smitRem.exe.
Extract it to it's own folder on your desktop (Right-click on an empty space on your desktop, choose New...Folder. Name it smitRem.

Please download SpyAxeFix © noahdfear.
Save it to your desktop. Close all other programs and windows. Double click SpyAxeFix.exe, then click Start to extract the tool to it's own folder.

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you unchecked these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware Icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware
When you have finished fixing, you can re-enable the program.

Start up your computer. After the first 'beep' begin tapping on the F8 key. A black menu page will appear.
Use your arrow keys to choose Safe Mode (without networking!)
Click on the Enter key.
Your desktop will appear, although it will be very distorted. The words Safe Mode will be in each corner of the desktop.

We need to open up hidden files and folders. Click Start>>>>Control Panel>>>>Folder Options and double click.
Under the View tab scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders
Check Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types
Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended} Answer Yes
Click Apply and click OK

While you are still in the Control Panel, double click on Add/Remove Programs.
Scroll down, highlight and click Uninstall/Remove for these:
Security Toolbar
SpyAxe
You will be prompted to reboot...Choose No
When finished with Add/Remove and the Control panel, close them.

To make scanning easier and quicker, let's get rid of some temp files.
Click Start>>>>Run and type in the box: cleanmgr.exe click OK
Let the application scan your computer, then make sure these 3 are checkmarked:
Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

click OK and when finished, close the application.

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
Click Scanner
Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:
"Perform action on all infections"
Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop.

Now open the smitRem folder, double-click on the the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open HJT and scan. Place a check/tick next to these items:
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.billingnow.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.reliablestats.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winantispyware.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winantivirus.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winantiviruspro.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winfixer.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winnanny.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.winsoftware.com

With everything closed (Nothing open) except HijackThis, click on the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

On your keyboard, click on the Windows key and the E key to bring up your Windows Explorer
Click to expand the C:/ drive, navigate to and delete the following files/folders:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mssearchnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hpxxx.tmp <<<< NOTE: Look in the System32 Folder for any hpxxx.tmp files and delete them all.
C:\Program Files\SpyAxe
C:Program Files\Security Toolbar
While you still have your Windows Explorer open, scroll through the C:\Windows to the Prefetch folder. Open the folder and delete all the contents.
Do not delete the folder, just the contents of the Prefetch folder. Close Windows Explorer.
Empty your recycle bin.

Open the SpyAxeFix folder and double click the SpyAxeFix.bat to start the tool.
At one point when the tool runs, your taskbar will disappear, and your computer will restart when the tool completes.
A text file will be created in the SpyAxeFix folder. Post the contents of it in your next reply.

After the reboot, on a clear spot on your desktop, right-click and choose Properties
Under the Desktop tab, click on Customize Desktop
Click on Web tab and uncheck/delete Security Info if present
Click OK
Click Apply and then click OK

Reboot normally. Do an online scan at: Trend Housecalls Virus Scan
Let it clean, disinfect, quarantine any items found.

Open HJT, scan, and save the report.
Paste the Ewido log, the smitfiles.text, the SpyAxeFix log and the new HJT log to this thread. It may take more than one post to get them all pasted.
I'll be watching for your reply.

Holy crap, that took a long time. I think it worked, though, no more flashy junk. Thank you :)

I followed all of the instructions, only in the Add/Remove there was no spyaxe or security toolbar; and none of the files you said to remove were there. I definitely had show all files on.

Here are my logs.

Thank you for the logs and the info :)

It appears that you were successful. Good job!

I don't see evidence of a firewall installed. If you are relying on the MS XP firewall, I would suggest you install another one.
When you get another firewall installed, be sure to disable the Windows firewall. In this case, more is NOT better!

There are several good, easy to use, (and best of all) free firewalls available.

Free Firewall Programs
http://www.zonelabs.com ZoneAlarm firewall
http://www.kerio.com Kerio firewall
http://www.sygate.com Sygate firewall

We have a couple of things left to do.

1. We need to re-hide those files again.

Click start >>> Control Panel >>> Folder Options and double click
Under the View tab scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders
Uncheck Show hidden files and folders
Check Hide extensions for known file types
Check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended}
Click Apply and click OK
Close out of Control Panel.

2. If you are sure you are having no more problems, then let's create a new restore point

Right click on the My Computer Icon on your desktop
Choose Properties from the menu
Click on the System Restore tab
Put a checkmark/tick in the box next to Turn off System Restore on all drives
Click Apply and click OK
Reboot your computer

Again Right click on the My Computer Icon on your desktop
Choose Properties from the menu
Click on the System Restore tab
UNcheck the box
Click Apply and click OK
Reboot
You now have a clean restore point.

3. Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Make your Internet Explorer more secure -
This can be done by following these simple instructions:

*Open [B]Internet Explorer
and click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
*Click on Security
*Click the Internet icon
*Click on Custom Level
*Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
*Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
*Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
*Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
*Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
*Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
*Change the Allow paste operations via script to Disable
*Click on OK
*Save (if asked).
*Click on Apply button
*Click on OK
*Close Internet Options

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently -
It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Update all scanning programs regularly -
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

We will leave this topic open for a couple of days, in the event you have further problems.

Happy surfing, nightingayle :)

Hi, that's great, thank you!

I do have one last problem, I'm not sure if this is in your domain or not... I installed the Kerio firewall, and then couldn't get back online. We're on a 4-computer home network here with a netgear router and cable modem, and none of the machines would go back online until I completely uninstalled the firewall, rebooted about a zillion times, and finally unplugged the router, turned off the computer, and turned them all back on.

So, how do I install a firewall and then configure it properly so we can get onto the internet? Please and thank you :)

Dog-gone-it

Best I can come up with, is that it is a setting that was incorrect.
I do remember setting up my Nortons at the same time I put in a new wireless router. There were settings that had to be changed, but I honestly don't remember what I did.

You might look at the documentation that came with your router.

I do apologize!

If anyone does come up with a helpful answer, I'll post it

Hi! Thanks for being so helpful :) I'll try and track down the router information and also check with my tech guy at work. If I find an answer, should I post it here for others or would it be me-specific?

It probably will be your setup specific.
I do thank you for the thought of helping others :)

A thought that did occur to me. Did you call your ISP when none of the computers could get online? It may well have been their problem, not yours.

It has been a pleasure working with you, nightingayle!
