automatic update off and can't turn it on.

my brother was messing with my computer one day then all of a sudden, popups just appear every minute or so...and i use firefox btw.

my automatic update for windows security center is also turned off for some reason and when i try to turn it on, it won't let me. something about "the security center could not change your settings"

and security center can't detect a firewall.

Your computer have multiple infections, including a Backdoor. A Backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.
If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation. Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. i have a few questions,
1) is it ok if i backup some of my stuff (ie: pictures, music, family videos, school documents) before i do a system restore?
2) if i do a system restore would it 100% remove the infections?

1.Backup your stuff regularly is essential in our daily life. but system restore doesn't mean your stuff would be deleted. Backup is the best way for just in case.

2.No 100% guaranty. Especially in your case.

3.We always back up our system image in a special partition, normally in the D partition. When disaster strikes or you want to reinstall of the OS in C partition, we need some special programs to make it happen, such as Ghost or Acronis True Image. If you want to use System Restore to undo changes in C partition, it won't affect the system image in D partition.

1. Update your antivirus programs
   
   Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

2. Update SP3
   
   Microsoft has released the latest upgrades to the XP OS platform, which can be referenced HERE
   It is critical to stay up to date with the latest upgrades to your Operating System, as this can help prevent future problems.
   Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all previously released updates for the operating system.
   I recommend that you visit the link above and apply the SP3 patch. or you can order a CD of Service Packs, it would be another alternatives for the large download issue.
   
   
3. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
   
   1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
   2. Click once on the Security tab
   3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
   4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
         
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
         
      3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

4. Update your Java
   
   Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
   
   Windows firewall is not recommended. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, it doesn't block anything at all outbound, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. Since most malware accesses the registry and can disable the Windows firewall, it's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.

This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. 7. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

8. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
