unable to remove Generic!artemis virus

Unread postby Redhead23 » December 4th, 2008, 5:30 pm

I have been unable to remove this virus. It was found under a McAfee scan but when asked to remove it said it was unable to completely remove it. It causes pop-ups even after the pop-up blocker is enabled, and slows down my computer. I disenabled system restore and tried to remove it from there, but still did not work. Here is my Hijackthis log:

Unread postby Axephilic » December 6th, 2008, 1:18 am

Hello Redhead23,

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forums! My name is Adam and I will be assisting you with getting the malware off of your computer. Please observe the following points before we start:
  1. If at any point you don't understand something, please let me know and I will be glad to expain or go more into depth for you. :)
  2. I am still in training, so my responses may take more time than usual because all of my posts must be checked by an expert or teacher.
Also, please remember, I am a volunteer and I have a personal life. I go to school full time, have a part time job, and I do sports. A lot of this takes a lot of time.
  3. Please keep all of your replys in this topic/thread and do not make a new topic/thread, thanks!
  4. Please stick with this, don't stop responding because the symptoms are gone, the infection could still be there. Keep replying to my posts until I give you the All Clean message. ;)
  5. If you don't reply within five days after my last instructions this topic will be closed. If you will not be able to reply within five days please tell me so the topic will not be closed.

Turn on System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK

Make an Uninstall List

Next, please make an uninstall list using HijackThis.
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply. Please also include a new HijackThis log.

Regards,
Adam

First Thanks for your time and help. Second I followed your instructions but when I get to save list it does not give me an option of a place to save this file or to name it so I am unsure of where it is saving this file and under which name it goes by?

Okay so I followed your instructions but encountered a few problems that I am unsure of whether or not it will affect the outcome. When I saved the fix.reg on the desktop it did not give me the option to merge, but instead asked if I was sure I wanted to add this into the registry so I clicked yes and continued following your instructions, I don't know if this made any difference. Next when I ran OTMoveit3.exe and told it to move the document you listed it said not found in the results field but I continued and pressed exit after that was done and tried this 3 times but each time it would freeze up and say OTMoveit3 was not responding and if I ended program any unsaved information would be lost. Now when I try and run this program, it has a popup window that says "cannot find file c:\_OTMoveIt\movedFiles\12072008-205124.log" but what I have pasted here for the OTMoveIt3 is what is shown in the results window after it is opened.
OTMoveIt3:

Files moved on Reboot...
File C:\DOCUME~1\RHONDA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\~DF5B3D.tmp not found!
File C:\DOCUME~1\RHONDA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\~DF5B85.tmp not found!
File move failed. C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\index.dat scheduled to be moved on reboot.

Please now try again to make an uninstall list. :)

Thank you, that is exactly what I wanted. I will post back as soon as possible with my next fix for you. Please refrain from running more virus scan's and the such until I give you the all clean.

Thanks,
Adam :)

Hello,

Uninstall Bad Programs
We are going to uninstall some bad stuff now.
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if found):

    Advertisement Service
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

Now you can close Add/Remove Programs.

Update Adobe Reader
You should download and install the newest version of the free Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to vulnerabilities in earlier versions of reader and acrobat.
All versions numbered lower than 8.1.2 are vulnerable.
  • Click here to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Select your Windows version and click on Download. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

You can keep your full version of Adobe Acrobat 5, but you should use it for editing and creation of pdf's only, NOT for opening pdf's on the net.
You can still call Adobe Acrobat 5 from Start, All Programs

Update Java
Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11.

  1. Click here to visit Java's website.
  2. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  3. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  4. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  5. Click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  6. Run this installation to update your Java.

Please now post a fresh HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running now. :)

Regards,
Adam

Thanks so much. My computer is running so much smoother now. There are no more pop-ups and has stopped lagging. Here is a copy of the new Hijackthis log:

Hi sorry to bother you again but a notice from McAfee just alerted me that it had blocked the Generic!artemis virus but unable to remove. This was not a scan but an alert screen. But I haven't had any of the issues I was having, such as the pop-ups and slow computer.

Hello,

Could you please tell me what the path to the file is that your McAfee is picking up?

Kaspersky Online Scanner
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

Please post a new HijackThis log too.

Regards,
Adam

Ok, no problem. If it's there, this should tell me where. ;)

Your welcome. :)
