My hijack this log

Unread postby Tyro » December 7th, 2008, 11:15 pm

I keep getting these odd popups and such telling me my system is infected.

One window that has been popping up recently told me to call ext. 5000, which doesn't make any sense to me and today that same window popped up and said it detected the Vundo trojan.

This is a computer (IBM Thinkpad, T60) that I got from school and I honestly don;t know what kind of virus protection program it has if any.

Here is my log:

Hi Shaba, thank you for your response.

This is a laptop given to me by my school. I'm the only one that has access to it, but it's part of a network (hen I am on campus).

I'm not sure if that answers your question.

I can't post an updated HiJack this log, because that program will no longer open for me and when I even search for it, my browser closes.

I see.

I asked because are there any IT support available for you in campus?

The problem is our semester is over and I won't be back on campus until late January.

In the meantime I have a lot of valuable work on here that I need access to during the break (we're going overseas in a few weeks too).

If you'd be willing to help, I would be grateful. But I understand if there are other people without those resources who might be more high priority.

Thanks for information.

We will begin with ComboFix.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Image

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Shaba, the option to disable my virus protection (which is VirusScan On Access) when I right click is not available.

So I can't download combofix from the sites you posted.

No joy, Shaba. The anti-virus program is not allowing me to install combofix from the portable storage device.

Then we will try this combo instead:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes'' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes'' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click ''Show Results'' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • Download random''s system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Post:

- mbam log
- rsit logs (taken after mbam run)

Looks like RSIT failed to download HijackThis.

Are you able to run HijackThis now?

Try to rename it if it doesn't run in normal way.

Let me know how it went.

I still can't run hijack this, even when I rename it, and whenever I even search for the program online to re-download it my browser closes.
