Spyware.ISpyNow

Unread postby ITDad » December 5th, 2008, 8:43 pm

I have been infected by a "Spyware.ISpyNow" thing. Here are the characteristics:

1) Shortly after boot up and upon bringing up internet explorer, a window pops up looking like a windows security center warning. The warning is that I have SpyWare.ISpyNow. Only clicking on the X will make the window go away.

2) The windows firewall is turned off. Turning it back on is only temporary. Soon it will be off again and windows warns that it is off.

3) Attempts to surf to some sites results in being sent to different sites.

4) was able to install "MalwareBytes" in safe mode only. However, attempts to update MalwareBytes all fail (safe mode, not safe mode, user, administrator).

5) Following the recommendation on another site, I found the following program:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Google\xtgoj6119471.exe

I went into the registry and deleted the keys that referenced this file. Then I deleted this file. In the same directory, there was also a fwlmsk.dll file. I wasn't sure about this so I renamed it to fwlmsk.dl$. Doing all of this resulted in the popup going away, but I am still have all of the other problems.

Thanks for any help.

Although it may appear that your system is clean, it is quite possible that you have only managed to eradicate the symptoms and that some infections still remain. We would suggest that you open a new thread and post a fresh HijackThis log as well as a link to this topic, and let someone have a look at your new log. You have nothing to lose by doing this and everything to gain. ;)

This topic is now closed.
