latency, CPU spikes and parallel bowser windows

Unread postby adgillis » November 18th, 2008, 12:14 pm

My problem is persistent browser hijacks that open a parallel browser window containing advertising. angel interactive, registrydefender, blockedclick are just some of the recent urls and forced windows that have occured. Periodically I get a warning that norton has stopped a worm attack (but parallel window openings occur with the woarning) but the parallel browser window has already opened so this doesn't appear to actually be stopping the worm (recently attacked my 80 port) .

I'm frustrated as repeated attempts (over several weeks) to clean my system and improve its performance have failed to yield results.
I have used spybot search and destroy, ad-aware (free version), norton system works antivirus (2005, i think) current with definitions. I also run pop-up stopper free edition, and zone alarm. Recent scans have found Myway, direct track and another trojan which have been eliminated but the problems have continued. I ran these scans both in safe mode and regular mode with system restor and GoBack turned off.

About month ago my system began to show significant latency in displaying new graphics and in "click speed" -in ALL applications (including IE explorer) graphics leave ghost images and the screen seems to freeze for 2-4 seconds until new images are displayed mouse navigation is delayed. My CPU percent usage spikes to 50% or much higher. My computer has a pentium 4 3.2Ghz processor with 3 GB of ram (my ram usage even at problem times appears to stay below 1gb). About 1 month ago I did receive messages about low disc space and that windows needed space. I deleted files and now have 11% free disc space on my primary drive and more on others. I experienced BSOD then acouple of times. I contunue to have messages about progams that "have to shut down" or fail. I think these include dwwin.exe, and goback system tray stuff, but there are others. I realize I may have a windows problem on top of imfections.

I'd appreciate any assistance someone could provide as nothing has appeared to work and I dread the option of reformating the drive. My hijack this log file is attached below.

Thanks, Andrew

Re: latency, CPU spikes and parallel bowser windows

Unread postby Katana » November 21st, 2008, 6:59 pm

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  1. Please Read All Instructions Carefully
  2. If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  3. Please do not run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you
  4. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those few things, everything should go smoothly Image

Please ensure that any USB/Flash/External drives are connected whilst we are cleaning your machine.

Please Note, your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.
Be assured, any links I give are safe

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy.
Unfortunately there are far more people needing help than there are helpers.

If you still require help please do the following

Download and Run RSIT
  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
    See HERE for help
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)

NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partne ... bscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
