thanks for chiming in, nick.

here's the stinger report:
McAfee AVERT Stinger Version 2.5.8 built on Oct 5 2005
Copyright (C) 2005 Networks Associates Technology, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
Virus data file v1000 created on Oct 5 2005.
Ready to scan for 54 viruses, trojans and variants.
Scan initiated on Fri Nov 18 10:52:47 2005

Number of clean files: 297792

-----
that doesnt say much, does it?
meanwhile, the microsoft tool reported that "no malicious software was detected." that said, i looked under "view detailed results" and found about 40 results under malware, with names like win32/bagle and win32/bagz and so forth. in the next column over, under "scan results," every entry said, "not infected."
hmmm.

btw, something i did along the way with all this anti-spyware stuff has caused lots of exe files to simply vanish. for instance, now the realplayer exe is gone, along with another dvd-program executible. i click on their shortcut and all i get is the flashlightl looking for them ...

is this something i'm going to be able to fix and/or reverse?

Thank you Nick-FY19 for chiming in, anytime :)

Hi Floete,

It was some report!.. ;) Your last HijackThis still has signs of infection. How is the computer behaving now? Is it any better? You've reported that some short cuts and some files are missing. I would like to warn you that this computer was very seriously compromised in the past . Errors like this may continue to happen in future. A format and reinstall would be a good option . If you would like to try and see if we can save it, we'll continue with the fix. However, I would advise you to start backing up all your documents, pictures, etc., and be prepared for the event that you may have to format and reinstall the operating system.

Please download Istbarfix from here. Go down to the "Removal using the Adware.Istbar Removal Tool" section, somewhere in the middle of the page. Read the notes before clicking on the link following "The tool can be found here:" Make sure the internet explorer is closed before you start the fix. Click on "Run" and let it do its work. When the fix is completed:

Clean the temporary internet files

Start Internet Explorer.
Click Tools > Internet Options.
In the Temporary Internet Files section, then click the Delete Files button.
Check Delete all offline content, and then click OK.

Restore Internet Explorer settings:

Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
b. Select Internet Options
c. Select the Programs tab
d. Click Reset Web Settings
e. Click OK
f. Exit Control Panel

Empty the Recylce Bin.

Click Start > Run > and type in:
services.msc
Click OK.
In the services window find mousehs.exe.
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK.

Run HijackThis. Close all other windows except HijackThis. Put a checkmark against:

O16 - DPF: {42F2C9BA-614F-47C0-B3E3-ECFD34EED658} (Installer Class) - http://66.29.7.159/toolbar/cabs/free_access.cab
O23 - Service: Mouse Hardware Sync (mousehs) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mousehs.exe (file missing)

Click on "Fix checked".

Please run the Kaspersky online scan again. Reboot. Run HijackThis. Please post a new HijackThis and the Kaspersky scan result. Since alot of the junk may have been disinfected already, it should not be as long as it was before.

P.S. Considering the size of Rhode Island, we may even know each other.

i'll get back to you when i've completed your last set of instructions.
thanks again.
this has been quite some learning experience for me.

Floete Hi again :) ,

So far so good, :) but I need to reiterate the necessity for you to back up all your documents and personal data on the computer before we continue. The scan results show that you had and still have Trojan.Win32.Crypt.t which is an alias for appropos. Apropos uses highly sophisticated stealth techniques, which involves a kernel-mode rootkit to avoid detection. We don't know what else might be hiding in there. You may be better off starting afresh. However, if you still want to go on:

I would like you to go to the Start button, click Settings> Control Panel > Java -or- Java Plugin > General tab > Temporary Internet Files > Delete Files:
Checkmark all 3 options
Click "OK"

If those settings are different, the "Clear Cache" option might be under the "Cache" tab instead.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer in Safe Mode during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then, empty the recycle bin.

Unhide system files:

" Click Start.
" Open My Computer.
" Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
" Select the View tab.
" Deselect the Show hidden files and folders option.
" Select the Hide file extensions for known types option.
" Select the Hide protected operating system files option.
" Click Yes to confirm.
" Click OK.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

We need to do a search. Start > Search > All Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
Paste the following file into the Search for files and folders named box:

trkdebug.dll

If found please delete it.

Still in Safe Mode (This is very important. This fix only works in safe mode), please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished and while you are still in Safe Mode, I would like you to try running Ewido again. I want to see if you are able to complete the scan this time.

Reboot in Normal Mode.

I also would like you to make sure that your antivirus is up-to-date. If not, please update it. If it has expired, let me know so that I can give you some links and instruction to get a new antivirus software. Are you still getting a lot of popups?

Now, please run online scans at:

trendmicro (Click on "Scan Now, it's free" Choose Your Country and click on "Go" Click on "Start Free Scan Now")
Panda, and
Kaspersky (you already have the link to this one)

Reboot and run HijackThis again. Post the reports from the online scans, Ewido, and the log from the HijackThis along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Hi Floete,

You should not be surfing the internet without any antivirus software. I think that's why you were so badly infected in the first place, and you are reinfected now. Please download IMMEDIATELY one of the following AV programs, install it and run a full scan. Check them out but please make sure that you install only ONE of them. Having more than one antivirus software would cause more trouble as they would conflict with each other and leave the computer vulnerable and unstable.

AVG Free here
AntiVir here
Avast here

Also run an online scan with Trendmicro. Make sure you check "AutoClean

After you have finished scanning, reboot and run HijackThis. Post the results of the scans and the new HijackThis please.

i installed AVG, which found no problems during its start-up scan. i tried running trendmicro, but it'd always freeze or otherwise mess up after about an hour and a half of running. quite a mess. anyway, here's my latest highjackthis scan. and yes i'm still getting pop ups.

You can run Kaspersky instead. I never got the log.txt file from the aproposfix. Did you run that? The file should be in the apropos folder.
