Request assitance with impact of Tinyproxy.exe

Unread postby jeff999 » November 10th, 2008, 5:31 pm

I recently got a virus from a forwarded Facebook message. I am running Symantec Antivirus with latest virus definitions file. I deleted tinyproxy.exe and C:\windows\system32\890166\890166.dll and then the \890166\ folder, but in MS IE 7 I get the message Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage, and when I look at the page properties I see res://ieframe.dll/dnserror.htm

Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Request assitance with impact of Tinyproxy.exe

Unread postby suebaby41 » November 16th, 2008, 3:36 pm

Welcome to the Malware removal Forums.

Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  2. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  3. After it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both. log.txt will be maximized and info.txt will be minimized.
Thank you for your patience.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

While we are working on your HijackThis log, please:
  1. Reply to this thread; do not start another!
  2. Do not make any changes on your computer during the cleaning process or download/add programs on your computer unless instructed to do so.
  3. Do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
  4. Let me know if any of the links do not work or if any of the tools do not work.
  5. Tell me about problems or symptoms that occur during the fix.
  6. Do not run any other programs or open any other windows while doing a fix.
  7. Ask any questions that you have regarding the fix(es), the infection(s), the performance of your computer, etc.
Thanks.

Re: Request assitance with impact of Tinyproxy.exe

Unread postby suebaby41 » November 21st, 2008, 1:12 pm

The ieframe.dll DLL file is related to Internet Explorer 7. In many cases, the installation of Internet Explorer 7 causes ieframe.dll errors to appear. Other causes include viruses, certain Windows Updates, incorrect firewall settings, outdated security software applications, and more.
Resolution
Important Note: Do not, under any circumstances, download the ieframe.dll DLL file individually from any "DLL download site." There are many reasons that downloading DLLs from these sites are never a good idea.

Note: If you've already downloaded ieframe.dll from one of those DLL download sites, remove it from wherever you placed it and continue with the following steps.
Open your internet explorer then go to TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS then SECURITY and then uncheck the ENABLE PROTECTED MODE options then close and open your IE7

  1. Restart your computer unless you've already done so. The ieframe.dll error might be a fluke and a simple restart could clear it up completely.
  2. Install the latest version of Internet Explorer. No matter if you're missing ieframe.dll or if you're receiving a browser error message about it, reinstalling or updating to the latest version of Internet Explorer has resolved many user's issues with ieframe.dll.
  3. Using Visual Basic 6? If so, change the reference for Microsoft Internet Controls from the existing ieframe.dll to shdocvw.ocx. Save your project and then reopen it.
  4. Restart your router, switch, cable/DSL modem and anything else that's used to communicate to the Internet or other computers on your network. There may be an issue in one of these pieces of hardware that a simple restart could solve.
  5. Scan your entire computer for viruses. Sometimes, the ieframe.dll error will show up when your computer is infected with certain kinds of viruses. Use your antivirus software to do a complete system scan for virus infections.
  6. Disable Windows Firewall in Windows XP if you have another firewall installed. Running two firewall applications at the same time can cause problems so if you have a firewall program installed like ZoneAlarm, Norton Personal Firewall, Comodo Firewall, etc., then you should not be running Windows's built-in firewall simultaneously.
Note: Even if you're positive that the Windows firewall is disabled, check again. Some Microsoft security updates have been known to re-enable the firewall automatically even if you have an existing firewall enabled in another security software program.
  7. Update all non-Microsoft firewall and other security software on your computer. Certain security updates from Microsoft have been known to cause issues with security software from other vendors that those vendors are responsible for resolving. Check their websites for updates or service packs and install any that are available.
Note: If you're already running a fully updated version of your security software, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the software instead. A clean installation may stop that nagging ieframe.dll error message.
  8. Visit Windows Update and install any suggested Microsoft related updates. It is true that some previous updates from Microsoft may actually cause some ieframe.dll errors, but installing more recent updates, especially those to the Windows Update software itself, may help resolve the problem.
  9. Clear the temporary Internet files in Internet Explorer 7. Some ieframe.dll issues may have to do with problems accessing existing temporary Internet files.
  10. Increase the frequency that Internet Explorer 7 checks for new versions of web pages. If the default setting is too infrequent and there are issues with certain pages, you may see ieframe.dll and related errors.
  11. Disable Internet Explorer 7 add-ons one by one. One of your installed add-ons might be causing the ieframe.dll issue. Selectively disabling them will show you which one, if any, is causing problems.
  12. Set Internet Explorer 7 security options back to their default levels. Some programs, even some updates from Microsoft, will sometimes make automatic changes to your Internet Explorer 7 security settings.
Incorrect or overprotective security settings can sometimes cause ieframe.dll issues. Returning these settings to their default levels may correct your issue.
  13. Move the IE7 Temporary Internet Files Folder to its Default Location in Windows XP. If the Temporary Internet Files folder in Internet Explorer 7 has been moved from its original location, plus both Protected Mode and the Phishing Filter are enabled, the ieframe.dll error will occur.
  14. Disable the Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer 7. This isn't a great long term solution if you don't have another phishing filter installed, but disabling IE7's phishing filter has been known to correct ieframe.dll issues in some situations.
  15. Disable Protected Mode in Internet Explorer 7. The Protected Mode feature in Internet Explorer 7 can, in some very specific situations, be involved in generating an ieframe.dll error message.

Do you still have a problem with the iframe error?

If not, then let's do some general cleaning.

Step 1

You may want to print this page. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Step 2

I noticed that you have some programs that need to be updated.

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date.

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove the older versions of Java Runtime Environment..
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer after all Java components are removed.
Please download the latest Java Runtime Environment.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right. When a new window opens, you will see
NOTE: This page offers files for different platforms - please be sure to download the proper file(s) for your platform.
Required: You must accept the license agreement to download the product.
  • Click to place a check mark by Accept License Agreement.
  • Make the selection corresponding to your computer platform. For Windows, click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-languagelink to download. Save it to your desktop.
  • On your desktop, double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
After you have installed the Java software on your computer, you must restart your browser. You can verify that Java Runtime Environment (RTE) has been installed correctly by clicking on the Verify Installation button on the Welcome To Java and Verify Installation page.

Step 3

In Normal Mode, run an online malware check from at least two and preferably three (one may catch something that another one may not) of the following sites
BitDefender
Computer Associates Online Virus Scan
Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner
McAfee FreeScan
Panda's ActiveScan
Trend Micro™ HouseCall
Windows Live Safety Center Free Online Scan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan
When you have completed the scans, if you get a report of files that cannot be cleaned / deleted, make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be cleaned / deleted. Please edit the log(s) and remove:
  • items listed as "Object is locked skipped"
  • items reported that are in a quarantine folder
Please post the edited list in your next reply.

Step 4

Please download Spybot-S&D©® and install Spybot-S&D©® .
  1. Be sure to UNCHECK TeaTimer when presented with the option to install. You can enable it after you are clean.
  2. Run Spybot-S&D©® , go to the Menu Bar at the top choose Mode and make certain that "Default mode" has a check mark beside it.
  3. Click the button "Search for Updates".
  4. If any updates are found, install them by placing a check mark next to each one and clicking "Download Updates".
  5. If you encounter any error messages while downloading the updates, manually download them from here.
  6. Click on "Immunize". When it detects what has or has not been blocked, block all remaining items by clicking the green plus sign next to immunize at the top.
  7. Click the button "Check for Problems".
  8. When Spybot-S&D©® is complete, it will be showing RED entries, bold BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
  9. Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
  10. Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot-S&D©® to fix the RED entries.
  11. REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
Note: After Windows loads, Spybot-S&D©® may run again to clean some files that it could not clean during the prior session. Follow the same procedure.

Step 5

  1. Please download Ad-Aware 2008 Free to your desktop. The Ad-Aware 2008 Free installation file will be aaw2008.msi or aaw2008.exe.
  2. Double-click the file and follow the on-screen instructions in the Installation Wizard to install.
  3. When the Please Enter Your License Information screen appears, click Cancel and Ad-Aware 2008 Free will be installed.
  4. When the Ad-Aware 2008 Has Been Successfully Installed Screen appears, click Finish to complete the installation and to launch Ad-Aware 2008 Free.
  5. The Status screen will appear. You will see four sections.
    • System Protection Status section where you will see Real Time Protection with a check in the Off dialog box and Automatic Updates with a check in the On dialog box.
    • Update Status section
    • System Scan section
    • License Status section where you will see that the Type: will be Free Edition and License Expires in: Never.
  6. In the list on the left of the screen, click Scan. You will be given a choice of Smart Scan, Full Scan, and Custom Scan. (Scheduler on the right of the screen is only available in Ad-Aware 2008 Plus and Ad-Aware Pro.)
  7. In the list on the left of the screen, click Settings > Scanning tab. Use the default settings unless you see some changes that you want to make.
  8. In the list on the left of the screen, click Status. In the System Scan section, click Scan Now.
  9. When the scan finishes, the Critical Objects tab window appears.

Step 12

Optional Fixes is the name that we use for fixes for unnecessary programs that load during startup and run in the background. These programs are not required to start automatically as you can start them manually if you need them. You would be removing the program from your startup but you would not be removing the program itself.

Your computer may be sluggish due to the many programs loading during startup and running in the background that are not necessary. Windows has a facility for starting programs at startup time. Some of these programs are required for your computer and the applications installed on it to run correctly. A good example of such a program is a virus-checking application that must always run, constantly checking for and isolating or removing files with viruses. Other such programs are not strictly required, or are optional. In some cases, you can gain significant performance enhancements by disabling the automatic startup of these programs. In many cases, the functionality offered by the programs is still available by starting the programs manually by, for example, starting the program from the Windows Start->Programs menu. Media players and instant messaging programs often fall into this category. In fact, it is common for many modern software applications, when installed, to add programs at startup that add items to the system tray or shortcut (context) menus in Windows Explorer to provide quick access to the features and functions of these applications. While they may be useful, they do increase boot time and consume system resources. It is advised that you disable these programs so that they do not take up necessary resources or slow the boot time.

Other than ScanRegistry, SystemTray, StateMgr, antivirus program entries, and firewall program entries, very few others need to load and run.

If you decide that you want to stop the Optional Fixes in your startup, let me know and I will give you a list with instructions. You would be removing the program from your startup but you would not be removing the program itself.

Step 13

Let’s run ATF-Cleaner to ensure no malware is hiding in temporary folders and for general computer cleanup to free space on your computer.

Step 14

Please run HijackThis in Normal Mode and post:

  1. the list of file names and locations for any files that cannot be cleaned / deleted that were reported after you completed the online scans.
  2. the log from MalwareBytes
  3. the log from SUPERAntiSpyware
  4. a new HijackThis log
Please advise me of any problems you still have.
