Help needed in removing remaining malware.

Unread postby mal79 » November 11th, 2008, 3:59 pm

Hi all,

I have been trying to rid my dads PC of malware and seem to have hit a brick wall. System is running slow and taking a long time to logon/shutdown (though how much of this is due to malware is not known).

Initially started to remove with Ad-Aware, then SpyBot S&D, then Malware Bytes. Resident security is Norton 360 which had ignored some "low risk" (!) threats, namely Hotbar and Webhancer. There seems to be residual traces of Hotbar that is difficult to get. Your help in purging this and anything else will be greatly appreciated.

Malcolm.

Hi mal79

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Re: Help needed in removing remaining malware.

Unread postby Shaba » November 13th, 2008, 10:37 am

Main reason for slowness is here:

Total RAM: 251 MB (18% free)

That is too little RAM for XP. If possible, I recommend to double it.

There are some signs of infections, but let's run this next:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hi Shaba,

I agree about the RAM, I have 2GB on order...

Interestingly I had run MBAM in the last few days and it came up clean, however this time it found a cuple of infections. I suspect these may have crept in after disabling Norton 360 to
try to perform Kaspersky online scan (which never completed).

Delete this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Brian Fewtrell\Application Data\ShopperReports

Empty Recycle Bin.

Try to run Kaspersky online scan after that and post back its log and a fresh HijackThis log, please.

Delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\ShopperReports\

Empty Recycle Bin.

All other viruses are in system restore and inactive.

I give you later instructions how to empty it.

Other than that, any problems left?

Aside from the general slowness of the system, all seems OK.

I assume if the "infections" are in the system restore area, then the next logical step is to clear old system restore and set a new restore point?

Thanks, Mal

Hi Shaba,

The general slowness I think is probably more due to my personal perception. My Notebook has Core 2 Duo, 2gb RAM and lite programs so an under RAMed Celeron is pedestrian in comparison.

However, judging the PC on how it was a few weeks ago as to how it is today, there is a definite improvement. My only gripe is that XP startup (logon to desktop settling down) is slow. I have already used Autoruns to disable the unnecessary programs, but the killer is Norton 360 - its Live updates and scanners take up huge system resource. I will see where we are once the max RAM is installed.

I have completed most of the actions on the list, bar a defrag and disabling DNS client. Overall I am happy with the results and await further instruction to clear system restore.

Next on the list will be the relative's PC I am at right now which seems to have a adware issue, but that is a new thread!!

Thanks again, Mal

Glad to hear :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Next we remove all used tools.

You can delete rsit and c:\rsit folder.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Hi Shaba,

I would like to say thank you again for all your help. I had managed to get so far with removal of the malware, but had run out of ideas. With your help and guidance, I was able to complete the malware removal and return the PC to my father clean, running much better than he had recently been used to.

All the best, Malcolm
