Help Much Appreciated - HJT Log

Unread postby PaulElmes » November 8th, 2008, 6:57 pm

Hi

I've been suffering with problems with my laptop that are often associated with Malware for some time now, I'm hoping you guys can help!

My biggest problem is the shrinking of the HDD. Over the last 2-3 weeks I've lost around 30GB of HDD memory, despite not downloading anything. I've done everything possible (including deleting files and reducing the Shadow Copy memory amount) and it's still and issue. I hope it's a malware problem.

My computer has been sporadic and volatile in the last few months which leads me to believe that it is malware. I do hope so much that it is :P

2 points I might add: I've been using a P2P programme for some time and I do realise that it's that has probably caused the problem. I have uninstalled it as per instructions.

Another point is that I am running my laptops internet connect via a wireless connect from a router. Thought I'd mention that as well.

Here's my HJT log:

EDIT: Here we go. Sorry about that:

Hi PaulElmes,

Have you had any warnings from your security software since the problems began?

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Hi thanks for the reply.

I've got Norton Security turned off and Windows Security Centre turned on because Norton kept preventing my computer from connecting to the internet. I havn't recieved any security wanrings as of yet from either Norton or Windows.

I completed the scan with the programe, but when both windows popped up my computer froze and restarted itself. Since then I havn't been able to get both logs, just the one, which is the log.txt :( I've deleted and re-installed and restarted and have redone the scan but can still only get the one blooming window!

Bloody pain to tell you the least. Not sure why it's not giving me the info.txt. Here's my log.txt, not sure if that alone will help. If you could tell me how to somehow get the info.txt window back up that would be cool.

Hi PaulElmes,

I've got Norton Security turned off and Windows Security Centre turned on because Norton kept preventing my computer from connecting to the internet. I havn't recieved any security wanrings as of yet from either Norton or Windows.
It's very important to have your antivirus software turned on and active - otherwise your machine is very vulnerable to infection. If you are having problems with Norton, then as it is a commercial package you may wish to seek support from the software vendor to rectify the problem. Alternatively, you can remove the software and install a free alternative such as one of these:

Antivir: http://www.free-av.com/
Avast!: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2nd RSIT log info.txt can probably be found here:
C:\RSIT\log.txt

If for any reason you can't find it, please make a new one as follows:

Delete this folder:
C:\RSIT

Then run RSIT again by double-clicking rsit.exe on your Desktop and following the prompts. Note that a new log.txt will appear on-screen, and the new info.txt will be minimised - so you will need to look for it on your taskbar.

Please post the 2nd RSIT log and let me know how you got on with your antivirus program.

Do you think that it could be something on my computer thats making my HDD drop? Because now it's down to under 10GB, when just under 2 weeks ago I had nearl 25GB. I'm not downloading anything either, and even if I did it wouldn't be physically possible for me to download that much!

Again, thank you for the help so far :king:

Hi,

Before tackling the disk usage issue directly, I need to try and make sure malware is not behind this. Things look OK at present but there are some further checks to make and some tidying up to do:

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some uninstallations to consider - these programs can be removed via Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features:

Pacific Poker has been reported as being associated with malware, so I recommend you remove it. To do so, find Pacific Poker and select Remove

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click the HijackThis program or shortcut, and choose Run as administrator to start the program
Choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.exe.imgfarm.com/images/nocach ... .0.1.0.cab
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download DAFT by Deckard to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click daft.exe and select Run as administrator to start the program then press OK when the disclaimer appears.
  • Press the Scan button, place a checkmark in any boxes that appear, then press Fix
  • Press scan again, you should receive the notice "All associations okay!" - if so, press OK and close the program
  • If you do not receive the notice, press Save Log and save the report as daft.txt to your Desktop and post a copy with your next response.

Hi PaulElmes,

That looks good :) some important final steps:

Please now delete rsit.exe, DAFT.exe, fsbl.exe and any remaining logs from your Desktop, also delete this folder:
C:\rsit

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start, then right-click Computer, select Properties then click System Protection
  • Next to You can create a Restore Point right now... click Create...
  • Type a name for the Restore Point like All Clean and press OK
  • Once the Restore Point has been created, press OK, OK and close the System dialog box.

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start, type cleanmgr in the search box and press Enter
  • Select Files from all users on this computer
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and confirm by pressing Delete
  • Then press OK and Delete Files to confirm

Re-enable Spybot's TeaTimer
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Check the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the above went well I think your machine is clean of malware. I have some recommendations to help you keep your machine clean, as well as how to resolve the disk usage problem.

WinDirStat is a program which shows all the files and folders on your computer, and shows you how much space they occupy in an easy-to-see way. The website and program download links are here:
http://windirstat.info/
http://windirstat.info/wds_current_setup.exe
Please take care not to delete any Windows system files.
If using this program doesn't resolve the issue, then as the problem is not malware-related I recommend you post at a general troubleshooting forum, such as the Microsoft Windows forum at WhattheTech, or PC Pitstop. The experts at these forums specialize in these types of issues and a speedy resolution is very likely.

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?p=33687

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
