Hi Guys,

My husband's computer seems to have a malware/trojan problem. Everytime he launches IE, he gets numerous popups about security risks. His homepage and toolbar have also been replaced with some anti-virus advertisements. I have attached the HijackThis log below. Thanks for any help that you can provide!

  • Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

BACKDOOR TROJAN

I'm afraid I have some bad news for you. Your computer has multiple infections a BACKDOOR TROJAN. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:

  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all youraccount numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).

Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:

What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should do a reformat and reinstallation of my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

Should you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Oh no! Are you serious??? Of course, this is not what we wanted to hear! :(

This is my husband's computer, so he primarily uses it for school, browsing the internet, checking e-mail, and paying some bills. We have gone ahead and disconnected the computer from the network, changed all of his usernames/passwords, and will be calling the banks to put an alert on our accounts. I have used the computer a few times, so I have changed my passwords as well.

I would feel much better reinstalling the OS; however, I bought the computer from my job (after we received new computers), so I will have to see if I can get the original OS disk from them. I do have another Dell computer in the house. Will its disk work with this computer?

I'm still trying to figure out how McAfee allowed this to happen. Any ideas? Can you recommend a better antivirus software for us to use? Also, how exactly could you tell that it was a Backdoor Trojan infection?

Thanks so much for your help!

I should work as long as you have the licence key for this infected machine. If you want we can try cleaning this computer.

I dont think there is anything wrong with Mcafee. It is hard to say how did it happen. Most of the time it is through an email or a visiting a internet site.

Also, how exactly could you tell that it was a Backdoor Trojan infection?

From your HijackThis log i found this line: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [wblogon] C:\WINDOWS\system32\algg.exe. Here you can read little about it.

I think that what may have happened is that McAfee wasn't working fully... When we went to look, it was not fully protecting the computer because it needed to be verified/updated. So, it obviously let some bad things in during that time.

Yes, if you think that you can help us clean the computer, I am willing to try anything at this point. Just let me know what I need to do.

Thank you!

Before we start i want to make sure that you understand that i can offer no assurances that the system will be secure afterwards, because of the backdoor trojan.

SDFix
If you already have SDFix, delete it & download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on SDFix.exe. By default, it will install to C:\
  • Click on Install
  • Don't run it yet
Print out or save this set of instructions as you will not have internet access during the fix.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode
:!: Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.
  • When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8 repeatedly
  • A boot menu will appear
  • Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key
  • Windows will now load
  • Log in to your usual account
  • Navigate to C:\SDfix (if you installed it to the default location, otherwise, locate where you installed it)
  • Double click on RunThis.bat
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot
  • When the PC restarts the tool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished
  • Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen. You can also find the report in SDFix folder, named Report.txt
  • Copy & paste the contents of the log in your next reply

Hi there!

I got caught up in mid-terms, so I haven't had a chance to work on the computer. As soon as I get home from work today, I will start working on it. So, look for another reply later tonight.

Thanks!

Hello!

These scans can take a while so take your time with them.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the Perform Full Scan option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and Scan in progress will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found.
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.[/color]

Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Logs/Information to Post in Next Reply

Please post the following logs/Information in your reply:
  • Kaspersky Log
  • Malwarebytes Antimalware
  • A fresh HijackThis Log ( after all the above has been done)
  • A description of how your computer is behaving

Thanks so much! I will be doing these scans tonight, so look for a response by the AM.

~Chris

P.S. Is there any way that a flash drive used on the infected computer could be infected as well?
