Hello,
I belive I had a trojan horse on this computer. Several files were quarantined by my AVG anti-virus program. I deleted the files and now I am uncertain about how to proceed with correcting the registry. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
Sincerely,
Joe Antra

Hello CAPNJACK,

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello CAPNJACK,

No malware shows in your HijackThis log. We need to do some minor fixes.

Do you have any bad symptoms, or do you want just to check?
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report.
A new HijackThis log.

Hello Chryssi2001,
Thank you so much for all your help. I do have one final set of questions for you about the files my AVG program quarantined and I deleted. Are these files gone forever? Is it possible I lost some important data? I do have an accounting program that does have some missing data, not huge but about 2 months worth. I haven't done a search for the missing data yet but will shortly. THANK YOU again for all your help. I will make a donation in your name to your wonderful service! Sincerely, Capnjack

Is this a business pc?
As per our policy here we do not work on business pcs.
In General, we do not help in cleaning business or corporate computers. There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware. There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that we do not wish to deal with.
If you ask for help and, unknown to us, it involves a business computer, you need to understand that any damages resulting from our advice are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Now back to your question.

If your AVG Anti-Virus quaranteed files and you emptied the Virus Vault, I believe they are gone.
Either they were infected, or a minimum chance they were a False Positive.
It's better always to have a look and see what files your Anti-Virus flagged as infected and are in quarantee before you empty Virus-Vault.

You can add in exceptions, files which you don't want your AVG Anti-virus to scan and/or remove like this:
  • Right-Click on your AVG7 icon on your taskbar and click Launch Control Center.
  • Click on Service Tab.
  • Go to Potentially Unwanted Programs Exceptions and add there the files you want to keep, but you have to be sure the programs were scanned before and they are not infected.
  • If you need more help how to do it, click on the small questionmark button at the bottom left corner.
---------------------------------------------------
Now we are not completely done yet.

I need a new HijackThis log please.
You missed posting it. :)

Also tell me if this is a business pc.

Hi Chryssi2001,
This computer is used for one of my small business accounting programs though I am in the process of moving the programs to another computer. I am a small one person business and again this computer is 90 percent personal use. In any case I would not hold your service liable for any efforts to make repairs to this computer. I knew I should not have emptied the virus vault but I did it anyway, oh well I suppose I could have done something much stupider! Here is the Hijackthis log file. Let me know what you think. Thank you again,
Capnjack

Hello CAPNJACK,

We did not run any programs which might harm your pc.
Since this is a one man pc, we can move on.

As i explained in my latest post, do add to your Anti-Virus programs exception your accounting program.
----------------------------------------------
Did you install this?

C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft

It didn't excist before and it excists now.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll (file missing)

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following files: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Hello Chryssi2001,
My computer seems to be running fine. The Arcsoft program is a media converter for an MP3 player. I have only used the player one time on this computer and the program must not have loaded correctly. Anyway, I believe it is harmless. The Kaspersky scan turned up a file that has the word Trojan in it, I though it was interesting. Here are the scan results and the HJT log. Thank you again for everything. CAPNJACK

Re: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Unread postby chryssi2001 » November 5th, 2008, 2:26 am

Hello CAPNJACK,

It looks that a suspicious email is stored in this folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

Maybe a link in an email gives that alert, because it's an html.
Here is a site which explains how you can go there and check your stored emails and remove them, or scan them one by one with your Anti-Virus.
----------------------------------------------
I can't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use windows firewall.

FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.
Vista users, must check compatibility with Vista before installation.

Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here
----------------------------------------------
Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 and newer versions should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"
