Please Help! Doubleclick keeps coming back.

I use spybot and adaware and they find cookies for doubleclick every time after I have been on the internet for a while. Please help me remove whatever files are installing this crapola. Here is a HJT log file. Thanks alot!

There's not too much wrong with your log.
Let's get rid of a couple of dregs, then I will give you instructions to get rid of the doubleclick cookies as well.

Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
The first one is a bad site, and fizzlewizzle popup blocker is a trojan.

- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. It also provides selective cookie management.
After Winpatrol is installed, right click the Scotty Dog in the system tray, choose Display Cookies Filters.
In the box labeled Enter text you want to filter certain cookies, type doubleclick, then choose Add.
You can then click the "X" in the upper right corner to exit.

Thanks very much... but I am looking for a solution that doesnt involve installing any software. I think I have found a solution. It involves replaceing my c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file. Seems to be blocking the cookies so far, but I still would love to know what files on my computer are prompting this stuff.

There are NO files on your computer that prompt ths stuff!
Tracking cookies are a (minor) privacy invasion, but usually not serious in the present backdrop of rootkits, trojans, and worms.

The problem is that thousands of reputable companies use doubleclick and other tracking companies for information collection purposes, and the relationship allows doubleclick to drop tracking cookies onto your PC when you visit those sites. You are assuming that only malicious companies are associated with doubleclick. That is not true, and tracking down all the companies that use doubleclick is not a useful pursuit, because you will never finish.

A HOSTS file is a very useful tool so you can avoid truly malicious web sites. You can get an excellent one and read about it here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm.
It will NOT, however, fix the doubleclick cookie issue... and doubleclick is only one of the companies in the business of providing tracking cookie info for sale.

If you follow my suggestion on WinPatrol, your PC will continually remove doubleclick cookies, or any others you don't like, and be safer in addition.

If you would prefer to make your own determination as to how to fix this issue, that is your decision. However, based on the fact that you posted here, and my experience on the subject, this is my recommendation.

I sincerely appreciate your help in this matter. I am by no means a computer pro. I do wonder why up untill last week spybot and adaware never detected these issues. I have been visiting the same sites as always but just this week these isues keep coming back even after I eliminate them with spybot or adaware. It leads me to believe that there is something on my system that wasnt there before last week.

Your assumption-that cookie receipts from familiar sites are tied to malevolent software on your machine- is just NOT correct. It's the sites you visit, and whether you allow cookies. As I recommended, Winpatrol can provide resistance against using the cookies to track you, by clearing them as they are delivered.
It's most likely that the exact cookies you are now getting were not being delivered by those sites at that time. Businesses change their strategies all the time. Cookies do have some value in the grand scheme of things, by remembering your interests.They are just sometimes used in a manner you might not prefer.

If you would like to perform an extra scan for malware, you can proceed as follows:
Run an Online scan.
Go tohttp://www.trendmicro.com and click Personal. Under Trend Micro Housecall (upper right) Click Scan now.
Click Scan Now It's Free. Choose your location, then Start Free Scan Now. Select Complete Scan. If it asks about installing an ActiveX control, allow it.
It'll take a few minutes to download, especially with a dialup connection, so be patient.
Check to Clean all drives and Scan.
When it completes, copy the full name of any virus, trojan, or spyware that cannot be cleaned or deleted and post them in your next reply.

To tighten down your Internet Explorer Settings, you can proceed like this.
It will not affect cookie delivery from legitimate sites:
Secure your Internet Explorer
- From within Internet Explorer, click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
- Click once on the Security Tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to - Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to - Prompt
- Click on the Advanced Tab
- Uncheck the box "Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer)"
- Uncheck the box "Enable Install On Demand (Other)"
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Options page

You will now have a more secure Internet Browser, although there will be some sites where all the content will not automatically show. You may be prompted with a small banner in case you want to allow the blocked content.

Coupled with your (reluctantly) installed SpywareBlaster and Winpatrol, your protection will be much improved.
