Unread postby Sharagoz » October 25th, 2008, 11:51 am

Hello csulax15, welcome to MWR
Please take note of the following before we begin the cleaning process:
  • The whole process will often take several days to complete, so please stay patient
  • Hang in there until I give you the 'All clean'. If you leave prematurely because your computer seems to be back to its old self, the risk of re-infection will be very high
  • Perform all actions in the order given
  • The instructions I give expect that you're using an account with administrator privileges and that the language of your operating system is English.
  • Dont be afraid to ask questions if something is unclear
  • I recommend you read through each set of instructions before you actually perform them

1) Create an uninstall list
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click the Open the Misc Tools section button
  • Click the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click the Save list button.
  • Include this log in your next reply

2) Get a new HiJackThis log
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button
  • HJT will run a scan and a log should open in Notepad
  • Include this log in your next reply

This may help. The problem started when I downloaded the new Adobe reader. Right after the download, McAfee picked up on a buffer overflow event and then I started to get the annoying ads.

Re: Lots of pop ups with audio

Unread postby Sharagoz » October 28th, 2008, 3:18 am

Hi.
Your last log looks better, but you are still not clean.

Before doing these steps you need to temporarily disable Ad-Awares Ad-Watch
Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray
At the bottom of the screen, uncheck both Active... and Automatic...

1) Uninstall through Add/Remove Programs
  • Press the windows key and the R key at the same time
(The windows key is usually located two to the left of the space bar and is labled with a windows logo)
  • A dialog box will Open. Type appwiz.cpl and press enter
  • This will take you to Add/Remove Programs
(Optionally you can locate Add/Remove Programs through the control panel)
  • Locate and uninstall the below program:

    Internet Explorer Default Page

Note:
You uninstall by selecting the program and then clicking the button named Remove or Uninstall

2) Download and run Brute Force Uninstaller
  • Download Brute Force Uninstaller from here and save to your desktop
  • Create a new folder at C:\BFU and extract the contents of bfu.zip into it
  • RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose Save Target/Link As to download DeepDive.bfu
  • Save it to C:\BFU
  • Launch BFU from C:\BFU\BFU.exe
  • Click on the folder button behind the Scriptfile to execute input box and select DeepDive.bfu
  • Press Execute and let the program do it's job (You will see a progress bar if you did this correctly)
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK
  • Press Exit to terminate the BFU program
  • A log will be located at C:\BFUlogdeepdive.txt, include this log in your next reply

3) Download and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  • Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and install the program
  • At the end, make sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    o Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    o Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version
  • Once the program has loaded, click Check for updates
  • Click select Perform full scan, then click Scan to start scanning
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply
Note:
If you for some reason lose the log, it can be retrieved manually from this location:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

4) Fix bad entry using HiJackThis
  • Launch HiJackThis
  • Click the Do a system scan only button
  • Put a checkmark next to the below line if its listed

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

  • IMPORTANT: Do NOT click fix until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now
  • Click the Fix checked button and close HiJackThis

You can enable Ad-Watch again now using the same procedure as when you disabled it

5) Get a new HiJackThis log
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button
  • HJT will run a scan and a log should open in Notepad
  • Include this log in your next reply

Logs to include:
C:\BFUlogdeepdive.txt
Malwarebytes' log
New HJT log

How is your computer runnnig now?

I cannot find Internet Explorer Default Page in the list of programs to add/remove. Should I process with the rest of the steps?

Re: Lots of pop ups with audio

Unread postby Sharagoz » October 29th, 2008, 10:53 am

Hi
It seems that Malwarebytes' did not remove the infected items it found.
Did you put a checkmark next to everything that was listed before clicking 'remove selected'?
Please re-run MBAM and make sure you dont forget the step I've highlighted in red.

1) Re-run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click select Perform full scan, then click Scan to start scanning
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Include this log in your next reply
Note:
If you for some reason lose the log, it can be retrieved manually from this location:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

2) Get a new HiJackThis log
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button
  • HJT will run a scan and a log should open in Notepad
  • Include this log in your next reply

Logs to include:
Most recent MBAM log
New HJT log

I thought I put a checkmark next to the listed items but I will try again. I am currently on a business trip but I will try once I get back home on Friday. Thanks for the amazing help you have been.

Unread postby Sharagoz » November 4th, 2008, 4:37 am

1) Fix bad entry using HiJackThis
  • Launch HiJackThis
  • Click the Do a system scan only button
  • Put a checkmark next to the below line

    O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {60f27d6a-d82e-4f0f-a8cb-22524ddb3ffd} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msziptools.dll

  • IMPORTANT: Do NOT click fix until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now
  • Click the Fix checked button and close HiJackThis

2) Delete malware file
  • Press the windows key and the R key at the same time to open the Run dialog box
(the windows key is usually located two to the left of the space bar and is labeled with a windows logo)
  • Type control folders and press enter
  • A control panel should now open.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option and click Yes at the warning prompt.
  • Click Apply
  • Click OK
  • Now locate and delete the below file

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msziptools.dll

  • If you are unable to find or unable to delete this file, let me know

3) Download and run CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from this page and install the program
  • Launch CCleaner
  • Click the Options button and select Advanced
  • Uncheck the option "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click the Cleaner button
  • If you wish to avoid being logged out of all websites you're currently logged into, make sure Cookies are unchecked for the web browser(s) you use. Internet Explorer are located under the Windows tab, other browsers are located under the Applications tab
  • Click the Run Cleaner button at the bottom right of the window
  • Click Yes at the prompt and let the cleaner finish
Note:
If there are more than one user account on this computer, run CCleaner using this procedure on all other user accounts as well

Temporarily disable Ad-watch before the next step.
If you temporarily disable McAfee as well the scan will complete faster.

4) Download and run SUPERAntiSpyware
  • Download SAS from here (use the link 'from authors site'), and install the program using default settings
  • When prompted about installing updates, click Yes
  • You can skip email registration and homepage protection
  • The program should auto-start after the installation. If it doesnt, there's will be a shortcut on your desktop that you can use to launch it manually
  • In the main window click Preferences to launch the configuration window
  • Under the General and Startup tab uncheck Start SUPERAntiSpyware when windows starts
  • Under the Scanning Control tab, uncheck everything except:
    o Close browsers before scanning
    o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining
    o Scan alternate data streams
  • Click the Close button and return to the main window
  • Click the Scan your Computer button
  • Select Perform complete scan, make sure the necessary drives are selected, and click the Next button
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click Next
  • A notification will appear saying Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then click the Finish button to return to the main menu.
  • Now we need to retrieve the log
  • In the main window, Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab
  • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log
  • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor
  • Include this log in your next post

You can enable real-time protection again after this step.

5) Get a new HiJackThis log
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button
  • HJT will run a scan and a log should open in Notepad
  • Include this log in your next reply

Logs I need:
SUPERAntiSpyware log
New HJT log

How is your computer running?
Are you still experiencing problems?

I could not find the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\msziptools.dll. I also tried to remove O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {60f27d6a-d82e-4f0f-a8cb-22524ddb3ffd} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msziptools.dll using HijackThis but could not remove the item. Below are the requested logs:

Ok, thats not a big problem, we'll remove the entry manually instead.

1) Create and run a registry script
  • Press the windows key and the R key at the same time to open the Run dialog box
(The windows key is usually located two to the left of your space bar and is labeled with a windows logo)
  • type notepad and press the enter key
  • A new notepad document should now open. Copy the content of the code box below into this notepad document
    Code: Select all
    REGEDIT4

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]
    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\60f27d6a-d82e-4f0f-a8cb-22524ddb3ffd]

  • Change the Save as type to All files and then save the file as fix.reg
  • Right-click on fix.reg and select Merge
  • Answer Yes at any prompts

Optional Removal: Viewpoint
You have Viewpoint Manager installed.
Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM).
Viewpoint Manager is considered foistware since it is installed without the user's approval. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect.
If you wish to uninstall Viewpoint, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following:
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

Outdated Java
Your version of Sun Java is outdated.
I strongly recommend you update it as some of the most videspread malware install itself by exploiting security holes in Java.
Here's a tool that will help you uninstall all old versions of Java.
This is a lot quicker than uninstalling them manually one by one.
  • Download JavaRa and unzip JavaRa.exe to your desktop
  • Close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • When JavRa has finished, close the log that opens and delte JavaRa.exe and JavaRa.zip
  • Download and install the latest version of Sun Java from here (click on one of the links below "Free download from")

2) Get a new HiJackThis log
  • Launch Hijackthis
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button
  • HJT will run a scan and a log should open in Notepad
  • Include this log in your next reply

Logs I need:
OTMoveIt log
New HJT log
