Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.

Thankyou for the responce.

I do have most of the programs already downloaded, and have kept them updated.
Also to let you know after I made my first post here, it seems some of the symptoms have vanished. and I didn't even run any scans lol. I havent done any repairs as of my first post. thus letting you find and confirm what it is I have. none of the virus/malware/adware programs have detected anyform of malware.
Also the (wayne.exe) at the bottom of the running process in the HJT log is HJT.exe
I did install Scotty as a precaution to keep any thing else from trying to change files without my knowlage. so let me know what next to do.
Thank's again
Wayne

Hi :)

Thankyou for the responce.

You're welcome!

Please refrain from running any self fixes and or installing applications during the course of this malware removal as it may actually hinder the process, thank you.

Before commencing with any of the below please make sure you are logged into the Computer Administrator account for this machine.

Next:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is on the desktop.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Both RSIT logs.

Re: problems keeping focus, changing default settings

Unread postby Dakeyras » October 21st, 2008, 2:14 pm

Hi :)

There is evidence ComboFix has been used within the last month on your computer. Is this still present?

Before commencing with any of the below please make sure you are logged into the Computer Administrator account for this machine.

Please download ATF Cleaner to your desktop.

  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Next:

Advised Optional Removal:

You also have installed Viewpoint Media Player, I advise you uninstall this application for the reasons stated here.

Note: THel optional removal will be highlighted in Red.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Viewpoint Media Player

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Next:

Hosts File Query:

I do not recognize the aforementioned in use. Is this a custom hosts file or one you have retrieved from a online source?

Next:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

Note: You must use Internet Explorer to carry out this scan and make sure you are logged into the Computer Administrator account for this machine.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following:
  • Inform myself how your computer is running
  • ComboFix query.
  • Host File query.
  • Kaspersky report
  • A new HijackThis Log

Ok here we go:

combo/fix:
the combo/fix was downloaded by a friend who was trying to help me figure out the problems I was having. it froze the computer just after it installed the recover console. I'm not sure if it saved a log that I could post for you to see what it did change or not but I do see the recovery console in the boot up menu at windows startup. he was also the person who told me to do a search to find this site.
Yes it is still in a folder he created named virus programs on the desk top.

ATF ran and cleaned out all my junk

Viewpoint Media Player uninstalled, but with no deciving questions???

it was installed with one of the malware programs my friend ran, just wish it included all the web address of all the P2P programs so I wouldn't have to wory about someone loading one of them again.

the quarantined files were from a trend scan back in march,
The "test file" is what I used to keep on my computer to make sure my AV scanner was funtioning. but trend didn't like it and kept snaching it into quarantine.

But the java exploit above, this is the first time I have ever seen this come up.

Edited to add running condition of the puter:

well for the time being it seems fine, the focus is staying with the window I'm in, and with the type box, so I have been able to type directly into this forum with out using note pad. But! it seemed that this problem went away just after I made my first post in here, matter of fact the first post I had to use note pad, but after that it quit jumping focus, so go figure the problem knew it was about to get found out???? I have no idea why it quit, as I have not made any repairs since I found this site.

but it still takes forever to shut windows down, which was another symtom, and also after the computer started acting up I found that logging into safe mode was a problem, the log in would freeze on the drivers list.

Re: problems keeping focus, changing default settings

Unread postby hurk27 » October 21st, 2008, 10:37 pm

I did find the text files where my friend ran combo fix back on the 10th of october.
I have not ran this program myself so it had to been when he ran it.

I don't know if it will help but here is the logs found in C:\Qoobox:

Re: problems keeping focus, changing default settings

Unread postby Dakeyras » October 22nd, 2008, 3:31 pm

Hi :)

Some friendly advice for future reference. Never attempt to run such a powerful application as ComboFix without supervision as your computer may end up being nothing more than a expensive paper weight.

Note: Do not do anything with the current ComboFix backups/files currently on your system for the time being. As I may need some of the backups later, thank you.

Viewpoint Media Player uninstalled, but with no deciving questions???

That is fine

thanks again, ready for my next assignment
Wayne

You're welcome!

Next:

Before commencing with any of the below please make sure you are logged into the Computer Administrator account for this machine for each part of the below fix.

Windows Check-Disk:

  • Click on Start >> My Computer >> Right click on the C:\ Drive Icon >> Properties
  • In the Local Disk (C:) Properties window click on the Tools tab
  • Under the Error checking click on the Check Now... tab
  • In the select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors then click Start.
You will now be prompted with the below:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?

Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

Next:

Please download DAFT from here to your Desktop.

  • Double click daft to run the application
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Place a checkmark next to the following entries in case they appear:

.reg
.scr

Note: If any other file associations are flagged as corrupt please place a checkmark against them also.

  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt
  • If everything is ok again, it should display the all associations ok message
  • Please post back the results of daft.txt in your next reply

Next:

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  • Once the program has loaded, click on the Update tab and check for any updates.
  • Close the application, do not use this yet!

Note: If you have uninstalled this application prior to reading this, inform myself please.

Next:

I am going to ask you to reset your Host File as follows:

Note: I will provide options for clean/safe Host Files when I give the all clear.

Download HostsXpert v4.1 and unzip it to your computer, somewhere where you can find it.
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to launch the program.
  • Click on Restore MS Hosts File to restore your Hosts file to its default condition.
  • Click on Make ReadOnly to secure it against further infection.
  • Exit the program.
Visit the Website for more information.

Next:

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:

  • Now click on the Scanner tab and select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
  • Copy and paste the log into your next reply.
The log can also be found here:

1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your computer is performing.
  • Daft.txt
  • Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

As far as me running combo fix, I havent as I the type of persone who will read everything I can, before I do anything, I ran all that you said to,

Also I have only one log on for this computer, and it is as Admin. now that I have another person using it maybe I should create another log on?

Scan disk/ Chkdsk fixed some things but I couldn't figure our how to copy the log from Event Viewer to post here. no bad sectors, just file problems.

Daft found nothing as well as mbam.

HostsXpert v4.1 revirted the host file back to MS Hoist, and write protected it, the host file that was in use was from spybot-SD and it was write protected which I had to undo to revert it back to the MS hoist file.

mbam didn't even find that Exploit.Java.Gimsh.a that Kaspersky found. Possable somthing new in the wild? because trend micro dosent find it either?

but anyway here are the logs:

DAFT Log saved on 2008-10-22 19:15:49

and still takes about 5 min's to shut down, havent tried to log into safe mode to see if I can now. which I wont until you instruct me.

A little about my computer knowlage, I got into building a few computers back in the 386/486 days when we had windows 3.0, 3.1 and our NT) 3.11 lol, built computers till just before win XP was relised. so I knew my way around 9X windows ok, but then XP came out and I never dug much into it, back in the 95 days, I made friends with Steve Gibson of GRC.com and did pretty well keeping virus/scrip kiddies off my machines, but today is a whole new ball game, and well as we see, here I am lol

well have to get off to bed work come's early.

Wayne

Edited to add:
That I do connect through a linksys 54g router, which is 64 bit encrypted and recently changed password protected/ with firewall

Hi :)

Thats fine and we will address Exploit.Java.Gimsh shortly

the computer has been doing ok cept for the curser blinking strangly causing typing problems.
and still takes about 5 min's to shut down, havent tried to log into safe mode to see if I can now. which I wont until you instruct me.

I recall the older Operating Systems quite well and even have a set on MS DOS 6.2 installation disks somewhere

It is a wise move to password protect the Admin access of your router, however it appears you may be using the WEP security protocol rather than the more secure WPA.
If this is the case I advice you change this

also windows update is poping up about a securty update, should I let it download or wait till I'm clean?

I am aware of the update you are referring too, this will require a system restart, you may install this after carrying out the below.

Next:

Check Mouse:

Its possible the Driver may be corrupted, check as follows please this is similar to the earlier Operating System's you mentioned experience of:

Click on Start >> Run... and type in the following exactly >>devmgmt.msc then click on OK

Scroll down to Mouse and other pointing devices and click on the plus sign + to expand the menu and check against the installed mouse if there is a yellow question next to it carry out the below:

If there is right click on mouse type PS/2 for example and select Scan for hardware changes follow the prompts etc.

Mouse Maintenance:

If using a wireless optical mouse the batteries made be nearing there lifespan and need changing.

Or if using a optical-mechanical mouse this may need cleaning as debris can accumulate and cause the mouse(and pointer/icon) to act erratically as follows:

Turn the mouse upside down and remove the bottom cover then the track ball.

Clean both the track ball and internal rollers with a lint free cloth if debris is present then reassemble accordingly.

Please download OTMoveIT3 to your Desktop.

Next:

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Code: Select all
:processes
explorer.exe

:Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Wayne Foster\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\44\232f2a6c-20a0bb17

[emptytemp]
[start explorer]
[Reboot]

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right-click in the "Paste instructions for items to be moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste
  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt3.

Next:

Please read this article and carry out the appropriate:
What to do if your Computer's running slowly

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • Inform myself how your computer is running.
  • OTMoveIt3 report.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

Ok I was gone most of the nite but I ran what you said, when I returned I had let my son on the computer while I was gone, he was going through his MY space and had the pop ups from the bogus malware saying I have multible infections do I want to download and scan. he didn't click on them as he didn't know what to do with them and left them sit there till I got home, I imeditly hit the X button at the top right in that popup, well it still came up like as if it was running so I hit the "STOP ALL INTERNET ACTIVITY" button in trend macro then ended all IE processes in task manager, which I was able to get rid of the popups, after which I looked for the files that this program normaly would behind and didn't find any and it never showed up again. so I hope it didn't get in.

Any way here are the logs:

I re-ran HJT after the popups to make sure you could see if it changed anything.

The mouse drivers checkout fine.
and the optical mouse is working good, this is a laptop so I have both the Synaptics pad and a wirless mouse, which diables the pad when in use. both work like new, the problem was when typing or even just viewing a web page/desktop and somtimes even when in a program windows the focus would keep flickering between sevral things at a time, it was at a very fast rate which cause it to be very hard to keep the focus in the window you are typing in, I tried the problem with the ctfmon.exe fix that just required me to diable this service to stop the change focus for Office but this wasn't the problem as it was still the same, till I made my first post in here and it magicly went away, the curser still blinks weardly as insteag of a smooth constant steady blink rate, it blinks at about a one second interval with two or more fast flickers inbetween, like somthing is polling for a service all the time, but at least its not taking my focus all over the place.

but other then that everything seems fine as far as I know, still havent tried to log into safe mode yet, this was one problem that showed up when all this happened, as well as it suddinly started to take forever to shut down the computer. it was like the HD write lite would flicker forever, then finly shut down. this all started abouth the same time this loss focus problem happened.

thanks for staying with this as this one has me bugged lol
waiting for whats next :D
