The worst case of dirty computers was when I had to clean a number of them in an apartment overlooking Ground Zero two weeks after 9/11. The windows had been open and the computers running when the towers came down.
I had to borrow an industrial vacuum cleaner to get the close to half an inch of concrete pieces and dust of who knows what out of them. The dust was everywhere including inside the FDDs and the CD players. The surprise was that at the end of very thorough clean up the computers worked OK.
The wonder of it all was that the computers was about the only salvageable things in those rooms. Everything else went to the dump.

Almost a Paperweight

Unread postby Always_Confused » November 15th, 2005, 3:52 pm

Okay I am one of the bad people  I had a cup of coffee sitting next to my laptop on the floor and my granddaughter knocked it over onto my keyboard. The tech that cleaned it for me said that it took him 8 hours to completely get the coffee out.

Eight hours? If it's a cheap keyboard, just replace it. The price of a new keyboard may have been much cheaper than hiring a tech for eight hours.

oh well, as its confession time....

i was on call for a major super market chain, pager went off at 3am.
So I set up the laptop on the desk and wandered out for a drink, Orange Juice was my choice.
dialed up to the customer, while it was connecting decided i needed some music, switched the radio on and went to close the bedroom door so I didnt wake the family up.
on the way back to the desk i tripped over the modem cable and the nice new 3 week old laptop was introduced to glass of OJ.

i managed to finish what i needed, but it never worked again.

sorry Mr Science minister sir.
