Unusual CPU Spikes

Unread postby guardian » October 15th, 2008, 10:06 am

Hi hope somebody can please offer some assistence.

I've recently noticed unusual cpu spikes via the task manager in my computer.
The cpu spikes are 0-7% usage and constant non-stop right from the start I use the computer.

I have used Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, Sophos anti-rootkit, and ant-virus software such as Avira and AVG as well as online scanners. These ones have detected nothing.

I then used Malwarebytes - Anti-Malware which detected a couple(5) of "Trojan.Extension.Exploits" which I then removed. However the cpu spikes are still on-going and has made no difference.

I am concerned not only because this is not right but fear that it is slowly damaging my computer and (cpu) as the cpu spikes are endless.

I am not sure how long it has been like this but I have noticed and been aware of this problem for a week now.

Image Image

Using Process Explorer I was able to see which process is possibly causing the spikes. "explorer.exe" seems to be constantly getting cpu usage every second the same amount.

Image

Could the virus/malware be embedded in explorer.exe

Here is a HijackThis log.

No other than the cpu spikes and detections by malwarebytes anti-malware I haven't noticed anything else unusual. My computer and programs still work fine and I haven't had any performance issues.

I can say that these cpu spikes were not there untill I noticed them and that my laptop is affected with the exact same symtoms I have here on this desktop.

Thanks

I should let you know that the detections by malwarebytes - anti-malware may not be related to the cpu spikes because I ran all the different scanners on my laptop including malwarebytes and it came up clean.

Re: Unusual CPU Spikes

Unread postby mz30 » October 16th, 2008, 2:25 pm

Hi Guardian,

The issues you are having do not appear to be malware related, the spikes you describe are fairly normal (i have them myself on my own computers) and a lot of programmes in task manager will fluctuate from time to time even if you are not using them,so i would say you have nothing to worry about, there are a couple of things you can do to improve the security of your computer ,as you have stated you have been infected in the past.

If you follow the instructions below hopefully it will make your surfing time a little less risky.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

After restarting your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

Note: Do this only ONCE, don't flush it regularly.

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!

Ok thanks for helping me out :) . I wasn't sure why I suddenly got those spikes but as you say it doesn't appear to malware which is good to hear. I will take up on your recommendations.

Thank you.
