All URLs are hijacked. Please help

Unread postby jbs444 » October 1st, 2008, 9:04 pm

Hi all,

This is the log from my friend's computer. She can't post it herself because all URLs are redirected to nasty sites. The sites seem to change each day so someone is really in control of her computer..

Links in IE or Firefox or Thunderbird all are redirected. I realize this is a huge log file but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Joe

Hi tan_pang,

Thank you for your assistance. Please understand that this is on my friend's computer and not mine. But since she can't click on any URLs I am acting as a go between.

I forwarded your request to her and I'll copy her reply into a reply as soon as I get it.

Thanks again,

Joe

Re: All URLs are hijacked. Please help

Unread postby tan_pang » October 9th, 2008, 5:50 am

Hi,

With reference to Malware Removal's P2P Programs Policy, please uninstall the following programs before we continue:

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Look for any LimeWire, Shareaza / Etomi and any other P2P programs, then click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall it.

After that, you may also need to locate these entries and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it:
  • Internet Explorer Default Page

    Optional (Look below for information):
  • SBC Yahoo! Applications (also known as IP insight)

Is IP insight really needed? (#1247)

No it's not necessary at all. It's a diagnostic tool that Verizon techs can use to troubleshoot connection problems on your line.
IP Insight is a Quality of Service and /or diagnostic package - but it's not used by VOL at this time - there's no back-end companion for tech support or NOC to use to access it...
It does send "phone home" data used to check latency and network traffic occasionally, but like any other features that it contains are unused or not implemented.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next,
We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

  • C:\ComboFix.txt
  • New HijackThis log.
  • And also your computer condition now.

It's fixed now. Many thanks for your help. Here are the two logs you requested.

Re: All URLs are hijacked. Please help

Unread postby tan_pang » October 14th, 2008, 9:08 pm

Hi, it looks good now, but still have some things need to do...
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
File::
%systemroot%\system32\drivers\TDSSserv.sys

Driver::
TDSSserv

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please run HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only". Place a check (tick) next to the following entries (if present):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://us.rd.yahoo.com/customize/ie/def ... .yahoo.com
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: Run IMVU - {d9288080-1baa-4bc4-9cf8-a92d743db949} - C:\Documents and Settings\Melanie & John\Start Menu\Programs\IMVU\Run IMVU.lnk (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c0042969 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c0042969.dat (file missing)

Now please close ALL open windows except HijackThis and press "Fix checked".

Then please exit HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In your next reply, please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • Kaspersky scan log
  • And a fresh HijackThis log

Hi,

She followed your instructions and here are the logs of ComboFix and HijackThis

Kaspersky won't run. Tried closing AVG and Spybot and the windows firewall but it just loads, updates and then when the scan is started it just freezes with no files scanned.

Thanks again,

Joe

Hi, can you please try to do the Kaspersky online scan again with Internet Explorer?

Make sure you accept everything that Kaspersky sending to the computer, and also disable the protective software in your computer temporary...
You can try to refer to here on how to disable the protective software. While protective software is disabled and online scan is performed, please don't do anything on that computer...

After it finish scan, save the report as .txt file and post the report as next reply. Also tell me your computer condition now...

Hi,

She tried that. Didn't work.

Disabled AVG and Spybot S&D and windows firewall.

Maybe use AVG 8 instead?

Hi, can you please try to use BitDefender online scan first?
Make sure you scan it with Internet Explorer
  1. Please go to Bitdefender website to perform an online scan.
  2. Click on I Agree.
  3. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX. Please allow it and install it.
  4. Under Select what you want to check for viruses, click on the Click here link.
    • Check (tick) the Desktop box.
    • Click on + sign next to My Computer. Uncheck (untick) your CD or DVD drive box(es).
    • Uncheck the Network box.
    • Click OK.
  5. Under Settings, click on the Click here link.
    • Under Action options, select Report only option.
    • Click on the + sign next to Second Action.
    • Select Report only option.
    • Click OK.
  6. Click on Click here to scan link.
  7. It will start loading the antivirus scan engine and virus definitions and start the scan. This will take a while. Please be patient.
  8. Click on Click here to export the scan report.
  9. Click on Desktop on your left.
  10. In the File Name box, copy and paste in Report.txt
  11. In the Save As Type box, select Text (Tab Delimited) (*.txt) file.
  12. Click Save.

If this online scanner still failed to start, then only try the AVG you have...
Make sure you can save the scan log and post it in next post. :)[/quote]

This is the Bitdefender response. The first file is HTML since saving as text isn't an option and the second was text.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instruction on how to do this can be found in here
Next, go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer to open Windows Explorer
Use Windows Explorer to navigate and delete the following files and folders (if present):
    Files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Melanie & John\Desktop\Melanies\New Folder\is this all jonatha brooke.mp3

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • In the middle of the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
    Image
  • Next to the Browse button you’ll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy and paste the following bold text in the text box:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Melanie & John\Desktop\taskmanager17.exe
  • Then click the "Send File" button just below.
  • This will scan the file (the progress bar will show "Current status: scanning"). Please be patient.
  • Once scanned (the progress bar will display "Current status: finished"), copy and paste the results in your next reply.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the next post, please post the result of:

Hi,

The mp3 was deleted and here is the html report from the Virus total site attached. Also, here is the Hijack This log attached.

The computer is running fine now. Are any of the other 11 files flagged by the antivirus program an issue?
