Fakealert Virus - have I removed all traces?

Unread postby humble22 » September 30th, 2008, 4:37 pm

A couple of weeks ago I somehow picked up this malware (replaces wallpaper with fake window warning of virus infection; impossible to change wallpaper as appropriate tab no longer visible) and wrestled with it for some time before I could do anything with it. My virus scanner (Trend-micro pc-cillin) recognised something was wrong but could not do anything about it. Other symptoms slowly emerged which virtually made the pc unusable even to run anti-malware software. Eventually I managed to run MalwareBytes and this seems to have been successful in removing the problem. I would just like to check that I have removed all trace of this and whether any threat remains.

My HijackThis log is as follows:

Welcome to the MWR forums. My name is Bio-Hazard. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research. Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • I f you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Note: I am still in training here at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

Uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis. To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

OK - I'm back.

1. I have run Hijack this and followed your instructions on 7 out of the 8 listed entries. Only the last item
O4-HKLM\..\Run:.......etc could not be found on the list

2. Folder C:\Program Files\vtyzpoc was found to be present but I have not been able to delete it. Whe attempting to do so I get the message:

"Cannot delete ApiGenAct.dll Access is denied. Make sure disc is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use"

3. RSIT downloaded and run. The two resultant files are attached below:

4. How are things running?

Immediately the system seems to be running OK but I'll report again tomorrow once I have checked it for a bit longer.

Thanks

OK.

I have hit my first slight problem in following your instructions.

When going to Kaspersky site it detects that I have Java SEv1.4.2_01 installed and says that I need to update to newer version (1.5 or above). Following links I have installed v6 update 7 but the Kaspersky site still doesn't recognise that this is installed. I have restared computer to make sure that the updates have been fully installed but Kaspersky stilll doesn't recognise that. On checking under Tools/internet options/advanced tab this still indicates that restart is required against Java. Under the add/remove programs both versions of Java are still listed.

Should I uninstall the older version (or indeed both and download new version again)?

Thanks

You can uninstall the older version.

Please run ATF cleaner and OTMoveIt3 according to my previous post. Thank you

Because Kaspersky is causing problems we will try another online scan:

Panda Online Scan

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC now button
  • A new window will open...click the Scan Now button
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan. Note: This may take a couple of minutes
  • Run the ActiveX control, if requested. The screen will then show the scanning progress - the scan will take a while to finish. Please be patient.
  • When the scan has finished, click on Export To
  • Save the file as Activescan.txt to your Desktop
  • Close the Activescan window then go to your Desktop
  • Double-click on Activescan.txt and it will open in Notepad
  • In Notepad, click Edit > Select all, then Edit > Copy
  • Reply to this thread and click Ctrl+V to paste the log in your reply

I have completed requested steps as best I can.

OTMoveIt3 - as requested
ATF Cleaner - as requested
Kaspersky - still not possible - for some reason still requests that version of Java be updated even after having done this (listed items under "Tools/internet options" advanced tab still suggests that system needs restart)
Panda - as requested
HijackTHis - as requested

Appropriate logs etc are copied below:

OTMoveIt3

========== FILES ==========
C:\Program Files\vtyzpoc moved successfully.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\hqzohkpu moved successfully.

Hello!

We are almost finished. You have done very well.

Did you uninstall the older version of Java, if you didn't this is how you can uninstall it:

Remove programs

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_01

OTMoveIt3
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
:files
C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Cookies\ian@doubleclick[1].txt
C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Cookies\ian@atdmt[2].txt
C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Cookies\ian@ad.yieldmanager[2].txt
C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Cookies\ian@adrevolver[1].txt
C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Local Settings\Temp\loadr.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3

Update Adobe Reader

Please uninstall older version of Adobe Reader before installing the latest version

  • Click Start
  • Control Panel
  • Double clicking on Add/Remove Programs
  • Locate older version of Adobe Reader and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it
  • Click HERE to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Select your Windows version and click on Download. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will receive prompts. Allow the installation to be ran and it will be installed automatically for you. If you are using other browsers, it will prompt you to save a file. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Close your Internet browser and open it again.

Optional Fix

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything bad. This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself.

To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.

How to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
    • Open AOL
    • Go to Help on the toolbar
    • Select About AOL
    • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.

Hi

If things are going well so far it is only because of your clear instructions!

Again I have followed your instructions as follows:

1. I had already uninstalled the earlier version of Java, thus now only leaving the newer version 6 update 7. The Java entries under Tools/Internet options still say "requires restart". Is there any way to check if this is actually working?

2. OTMoveIT3 instructions - done; log copied below

3. Adobe updated to v9.0

4. Viewpoint uninstalled. As far as I am aware I do not have AOL software on my computer thus additional actions not applicable(?).

Hello!

Please go to this site to check if your Java is working correctly.

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

Clean up with OTMoveIt3

  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

You can get rid of the tools we used:
  • ATF Cleaner (You can just delete the exe file from your desktop)
  • RSIT (You can just delete the exe file from your desktop)

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints. You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

    Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

    General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

    • Clear Infected System Restore Points
      • Turn System Restore off
      • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Restore tab.
      • Check Turn off System Restore.
      • Click Apply, and then click OK.
        Restart your computer
      • Turn System Restore on
      • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Restore tab.
      • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
      • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis

    • Set correct settings for files
      • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
      • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
      • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
      • If necessary check Display content of system folders
      • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
      • Click OK

    • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
NOTE: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
    • Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
The Windows firewall only monitors incoming traffic, NOT outgoing. Using a software firewall in its default configuration to replace the Windows firewall greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Make sure your firewall is always enabled while your computer is connected to the internet.
NOTE: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one firewall installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.
    • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
    • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.
    • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

    Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

    • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
    • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
    • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
    • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
      Firefox
      Opera

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!
