Hi rfeichel, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. Please note that I am still in training at Malware Removal University, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I am sorry that there has been such a delay in getting to your log.

If you still need assistance, please do the following:

Step #1: Please post a new Hijack This Log

  • Launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step #2: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

If you have been able to get the problem resolved, please let me know so I can have this topic closed.

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,
Thanks for your reply. I am not sure if this is still a problem. The people at symantec posted information about this trojan and basically they said it was a low threat and only reported back to ?? with search requests. I am/was concerned because I don't really want my searches broadcast to unknown people for unknown reasons. They said it affected both Firefox and MSIE. Firfox 3.0 upgrade warns that it does not support the addon Sotfone Tracker (which is the Trojan). So since it does not support the tracker I upgraded. I find no evidence it exists in MSIE. But then again I am an amateur in these matters. If you see no problem then I guess close the thread. Also, if in examining the Hi Jack this logfile you find anything that it questionable or "why do You have it" then let me know and I will deal with it, same goes for anything that you think should be there. Thanks for your help.

Bob

Unread postby ktreffin » September 25th, 2008, 4:07 pm

Hi Bob,

I am not seeing a lot. There are a couple of things that we can take care of. I would also like to do a different scan to see if anything shows up:

Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
McAfee
Symantec

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please disable one or the other so they do not conflict.

*===============================================*

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Manager, click Remove.

*===============================================*

Step #1: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Are you familiar with these?

O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - http://www.gatheringofnations.com/image ... _crest.jpg
O24 - Desktop Component 1: (no name) - http://www.friskies.com/images/getfrisk ... eader2.jpg

These have been set as active desktop components. If you have set them purposefully you may decide to keep them. If not, let me know, and I will have you take care of them.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

*===============================================*

Step #4: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • Contents of the Uninstall list
  • Let me know about those 024 items
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks,
Ken

Ken,

Viewpoint is gone
O24 items are gone

Actually I have not been using Symantec Virus software. It should not be installed. I was using part of Norton System Works (which has the virus software - but it was not installed). I suspect some files get installed no matter what. anyway it is gone.

I have been using Malwarebytes software for about a month - good program.

Bob :shock:

Hi Bob,

Well, I am still not seeing much. Nice job on getting rid of those un-necessaries though!! Your log does look a lot better. Lets do a couple more things:

Step #1: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present - Fix this unless you purposely set this restriction
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present - Fix this unless you purposely set this restriction

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to your desktop by changing the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Now close the window.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,
Ken

Looks like Kaspersky found some items we need to take care of. Please do the following:

Step #1: Download and Run ComboFix

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the ComboFix log

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Trojan.Brojack

Unread postby ktreffin » September 28th, 2008, 9:22 pm

Hi Bob,

Great job! How are things running? Any better yet?

Couple of other things that we need to do.....

Step #1: Run CFScript

Close any open browsers and close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Code: Select all
File::
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\NPMySrWB.dll
C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msimg32.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture below, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Image
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

*===============================================*

Step #2: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • Please let me know how things are running.
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the ComboFix Log

Thanks,
Ken

Congratulations rfeichel, Your log appears to be clean! Image

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like removing dangerous tools and Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional.

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

Remove dangerous tools - Because some tools we used can be dangerous if they're used in the wrong way we have to remove some of them. Please remove the following tools:

Uninstall Combofix

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
Image
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Update your Anti Virus Software - I would highly recommend that you set your Anti-Virus software to update automatically. Most Anti-Virus programs will update at least once a day, and frequently more than once a day. If you notice that it isn't updating itself regularly and frequently, you should check to make sure your anti-virus subscription has not expired (if it's a paid subscription) or that your settings have not spontaneously changed.

Turn on "Automatic Updates" - In order to make sure your system stays up to date, I recommend that you turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature. To turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature please do the following:
  • Click Start and choose Control Panel
  • In the control panel double click "Automatic Updates"
  • Make sure "Automatic (recommended)" is ticked
  • set the time that you would like to check for updates
  • Click "OK"

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer including those for Microsoft Office, etc. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index. ... ils&f_id=5
A short distance down the page in the center, click on the Download button.
Agree to the license.
On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word "Hosts Manager" choose "Save Target As" and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop.
Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager

After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can right click/delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop).
When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the Right side of the bar labeled "Options and Tools",
Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
In the Left Pane, click Download.
It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save.
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

If you have a separate third party Firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
Opera

Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted!
Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints called Malware Complaints. Please register there first!

Ken,

Thanks for the help. I do use Firefox for most things but I need to keep MSIE because my bank info will only print properly with it. Most if not all of those other things I already do. And, those I don't do I will start. You may archieve the topic.

Thanks again.

Bob.
