Something must be on this machine

I know I have 2 antivirus programs. The Symantec was installed by a school I worked at and when I try to uninstall it asks me for a password. I hope the school will send it to me but if not can it be uninstalled without one?

You want to run the fix until you see all Vundo files say: "Has been deleted".

• Please download
  VundoFix.exe by Atribune to your desktop.
• Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
• Click the Scan for Vundo button.
• After it is done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
• You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
• After you click Yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
• When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
• Turn your computer back on.
• Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HijackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from Click the "Scan for Vundo button. when VundoFix appears at reboot.

I know I have 2 antivirus programs. The Symantec was installed by a school I worked at and when I try to uninstall it asks me for a password. I hope the school will send it to me but if not can it be uninstalled without one?

Why did you install the second antivirus before you were able to uninstall the Symantec antivirus? Please uninstall AVG 7; it has been replaced with AVG 8. When we get your computer clean, we will deal with uninstalling the Symantec antivirus without having a password and replacing it with AVG 8.

Step 1

Install The Recovery Console To Your Hard Drive

I recommend that you install the Recovery Console directly onto your computer so that if you need it in the future, it is readily available.

To install the Recovery Console on your hard drive, follow these steps:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM drive.
2. Click the Start > Run.
3. In the Open dialog box, type

   X:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

   (X is the drive letter for your CD reader).
4. Click OK button.
5. Click Yes to continue with the installation of the Recovery Console. The setup program will then attempt to do a Dynamic Update to ensure you have the latest files.
6. Allow it to continue and when it is finished, you should see a message that says: The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
7. Press the OK button and remove the CD from your computer.
8. When you start your computer, you will have an option to start the Recovery Console.

Step 2

1. Please download ComboFix save it to your desktop. Alternate download location
   **Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**.
2. Close ALL browser windows (including this one).
3. According to your Internet connection, please disconnect from the Internet:
   • Physically remove the cable for your broadband Internet service “Always On” Connection from your computer.
   • Turn your modem off.
   • Disconnect your modem cable from your computer.
   • Turn the device off for Handheld wireless connections.
4. Exit all processes and items in your System tray including your antivirus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
5. Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
6. A window will open with a warning. Type 1 and press Enter to begin the scan.
7. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted, may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop.
8. Caution - do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed. Touching your mouse/keyboard while the scan is running may cause it to stall.
9. When finished, ComboFix will produce a log for you and will automatically save the log file to C:\combofix.txt.
10. ComboFix will create a folder called QooBox in C: (C:\QooBox). It will contain any folders that were quarantined. When you are done, you can delete this folder - QooBox.
11. Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings including making it the default browser. ComboFix resets some settings in IE in order to remove changes which may have been made by malware. It may also change the time format.

Go ahead and run ComboFix. Will WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe install a Recovery Console? I am not familiar with WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe. If it does not install a Recovery Console or something like it, you may want to backup your files.

If I understand correctly, on SEP 3, silver gave the computer a clean slate and advised you to do the same thing with all three computers. It appears that you did not do this.

Until you uninstall all but one of the antivirus programs, we are wasting our time. This is the reason that we advise against having more than one antivirus program. When you uninstall all but one antivirus program on each of the three computers, we can try again.

Most of the popular antivirus products, when running together, will "fight for control" over the user's machine. It is this conflict that will slow down the system speed and cause various serious compatibility problems. This can also create registry conflicts as well as causing false virus alerts - or worse, missing alerts entirely! Having more than one antivirus program running and "active in memory" will use more resources which will adversely affect your access to files and cause overall system slowdowns.

Symantec strongly recommends that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Kaspersky Lab experts do not recommend using more that one antivirus package on the computer as the co-work of two different Antivirus programs may lead to computer productivity and operating system fall. And to solve the problem of Antivirus applications you will need to reinstall the operating system.

Types Of Antivirus Programs:

There are basically two types of antivirus programs: On-Access and On-Demand

On-Access Scanners, as the name implies, run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an on-access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

On-Demand Scanners, such as Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine, as the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to run.

Antivirus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two antivirus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple antivirus programs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. Running two antivirus programs at the same time could lead to both of them trying to scan the same file at the same time, scan the same email at the same time and so on which could lead to conflicts.
I strongly suggest you do one of the following:

1. Configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning and leave the rest disabled most of the time.
2. Go to "Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs" and uninstall all but one antivirus program.
