Re: Showing a Troj_Generic.ADV on my computer (Hijack this log)

Unread postby Rodav » September 10th, 2008, 7:01 am

Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

REMOVE P2P PROGRAMS
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Limewire

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) NOW.

  • Open HijackThis (Right click and select Run as Administrator).
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi there, I didn't know if anyone would get back to me so needless to say my computer crashed and had to do a system restore, but I have attached a new hijack this log so I can make sure things are good. I do not think I have any P2P programs on my system. Below is the log. Thanks so much!

Re: Showing a Troj_Generic.ADV on my computer (Hijack this log)

Unread postby Rodav » September 11th, 2008, 6:43 pm

There is nothing particularly nasty going on in your log. Myspace is notorious for having some profile pages infected with malware injected code, viewing one of these pages may have triggered Trend into action for you. If you were getting these warnings at the Myspace homepage http://www.myspace.com then it may be something different. Are you having any other issues?

Disable SpySweeper until the computer is clean

SpySweeper normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.
Spy Sweeper version 4:

  • Open SpySweeper
  • Select Options and then Program Options
  • Uncheck the option Load at Windows Startup
  • Select Shields and uncheck all there
  • Uncheck Home page shield
  • Uncheck automatically restore default without notification
  • Reboot your machine to complete the process
SpySweeper version 5:
To disable SpySweeper Shields
  • Open SpySweeper.
  • Click Shield Settings on the right (or Shields on the left, depending what screen you're on).
  • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
  • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
  • Click Hosts File and uncheck all items.
  • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Close SpySweeper.
Reboot your machine, and ensure Spy Sweeper is disabled.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Disable Windows Defender until the computer is clean

Windows Defender normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Select Tools and then General Settings
  • Under Real Time Protection Options uncheck Turn on real-time protection
  • Select Save
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

Fix Lines with HijackThis
  • Run HijackThis (Right click, then Run as Administrator)
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application and Restart your computer.

Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.

Logs to Post:
Run HijackThis, do a system scan and post:
  • The NOD32 results
  • The new HijackThis results
Also let me know how your computer is running

Re: Showing a Troj_Generic.ADV on my computer (Hijack this log)

Unread postby Rodav » September 12th, 2008, 7:15 am

I still don't see anything wrong, are you still having issues?

I forgot to ask you in my previous post to Right Click and select Run as Administrator, HijackThis when you were getting the system scan log. Could you please do this again and post the log into your next reply along with a description of any issues you are having.

Here is the log you asked for, I have no alerts about viruses or anything but my computer is running slower than usual. That is not normal for this computer.

Re: Showing a Troj_Generic.ADV on my computer (Hijack this log)

See if this helps to speed up your computer:
http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials ... slowly.php

Let me know if that helps.

Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE, J2SE, or Java Webstart in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all installed versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE) and install it to your computer.

Due to lack of response this topic is now closed.

If you still need help open a new thread in the Malware Removal forum and wait for a new helper.

If you have been helped and wish to donate to help with the costs of this volunteer site, please read Donations For Malware Removal
