ie critical update needed... has the problem been resolved??

Unread postby lama2006 » August 28th, 2008, 9:11 pm

I found a file called "infected" in a folder i downloaded recently from the internet, just before the problem started..

so i deleted the whole folder,, and the problem no longer appears..

I sent hijackthis scan result in a topic before, when I was facing the problem..

i'll send it again followed by the scan after deleting the folder,
so that you could please check if the problem has been resolved..

thanks alot.....

Re: ie critical update needed... has the problem been resolved??

Unread postby silver » September 5th, 2008, 10:37 pm

Hi lama2006,

The problem has not yet been resolved as there is malware present in your HijackThis log, but we can begin cleaning it as follows:

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt and info.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Malwarebytes Antimalware report and both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

Re: ie critical update needed... has the problem been resolved??

Unread postby silver » September 7th, 2008, 8:50 am

Hi lama2006,

The malware which was present before no longer appears in the log. This is of course great news, but I can't tell from the log alone whether Norton completely removed it or not, or whether there is other malware present, so I'd recommend you go through the cleaning procedure anyway. If you would like to continue, please follow the instructions from my previous post.

Hi lama2006,

The log shows your machine may have been infected by a backdoor trojan. It may not be active at the present time, but the infection is so serious that I need to warn you about it. Here is my standard message for victims of this type of malware:

These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:

  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Are your "F:", "G:" and "H:" drives USB flash drives?
Please let me know what these drives are in your next response

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features, and remove the following:
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6
This is out of date and now a security risk, you already have the latest Java installed (version 6 update 7) don't remove that one.

You have the Megaupload Toolbar installed, this software tracks the websites you visit and provides the information to advertisers so I recommend you remove it. This program can be removed via Programs and Features.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click the HijackThis program or shortcut, and choose Run as administrator to start the program
Choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O2 - BHO: NCO 2.0 IE BHO - {602ADB0E-4AFF-4217-8AA1-95DAC4DFA408} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {7FEBEFE3-6B19-4349-98D2-FFB09D4B49CA} - (no file)
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'LOCAL SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'NETWORK SERVICE')
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [] (User 'Default user')
If you removed Megaupload Toolbar, then also check these lines (if present):
O2 - BHO: Megaupload Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-CCB0-B130EEDBE97C} - C:\PROGRA~1\MEGAUP~1\MEGAUP~1.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: Megaupload Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-CCB0-B130EEDBE97C} - C:\PROGRA~1\MEGAUP~1\MEGAUP~1.DLL
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Backup Your Registry:
  • Download ERUNT to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click erunt.zip, choose Extract All... and follow the prompts to unzip the program
  • Open the erunt folder on your Desktop, right-click ERUNT.exe and select Run as administrator to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop, right-click it and select Run as administrator
A black box should open and your hard drive will be searched for malware files, this may take a few minutes.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed, when the program has finished running it should open automatically in Notepad
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results.txt output and a new HijackThis log

Hi lama2006,

Download Flash_Disinfector to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click on Flash_Disinfector.exe and choose Run as administrator to start the program, then follow the prompts.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive(s) - please do so
  • When the program is finished a message box will appear - click OK and your desktop should now appear.
  • If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, type in explorer.exe and press Enter - your desktop should now appear.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download DAFT by Deckard to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Right-click daft.exe and select Run as administrator to start the program then press OK when the disclaimer appears.
  • Press the Scan button, place a checkmark in any boxes that appear, then press Fix
  • Press scan again, you should receive the notice "All associations okay!" - if so, press OK and close the program
  • If you do not receive the notice, press Save Log and save the report as daft.txt to your Desktop and post a copy with your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
dir C:\cfdflx.com /a /s >> results2.txt 2>>&1
reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components" /s >> results2.txt 2>>&1
start notepad results2.txt
del %0

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop, right-click it and select Run as administrator
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results2.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed, it should open automatically in Notepad.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scan with ESET online scanner:
  • Open Internet Explorer by right-clicking the IE icon (on the Start menu or quick launch) and selecting Run as administrator
  • NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start, copy/paste the following command into the search box and press Enter:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.
  • Please be sure to close this Internet Explorer window before continuing.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results2.txt output, the Blacklight report, the Eset scan log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi lama2006,

Download HostsXpert to your Desktop
  • Unzip HostsXpert.zip to your Desktop (right-click, select Extract All... and follow the prompts)
  • Open the HostsXpert folder and double click on HostsXpert.exe
  • Click Backup/Restore->Create Backup to back up your existing hosts file
  • Then click on Restore MS Hosts File and OK the prompt to restore your Hosts file to the default
  • Close program when complete.
  • If for any reason you wish to restore the old hosts file, you can do so by pressing Make Writeable?, then Backup/Restore->Restore Backup and OK to the prompt.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please now delete rsit.exe, ERUNT, Flash_Disinfector.exe, daft.exe and fsbl.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:
C:\rsit

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start, then right-click Computer, select Properties then click System Protection
  • Next to You can create a Restore Point right now... click Create...
  • Type a name for the Restore Point like All Clean and press OK
  • Once the Restore Point has been created, press OK, OK and close the System dialog box.

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start, type cleanmgr in the search box and press Enter
  • Select Files from all users on this computer
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and confirm by pressing Delete
  • Then press OK and Delete Files to confirm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re-enable Windows Defender real-time protection:
  • Open Start->All Programs->Windows Defender
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, check Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please tell me if you had any difficulties with the instructions and let me know how your machine is running now.

Hi lama2006,

Yes, if the above steps went OK I think your machine is now clean. Here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
