New Malware problem

We have a Dell Dimension running XP and Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet security 14. Everything up to date. The antivirus alerted and identified two files that were suspicious, each file was listed twice. The files identified were flagged as "Hifrm" and located as follows:

I ran HiJack This, the logfile is posted below, also the uninstall log. I did notice an executable named Network Diagnostic, xpnetdiag.exe; we did not intentionally install this application.

This is our third encounter with malicious software. The first time the entire system was restored to correct the problem. The second time, I received assistance from Malware Removal and got the system cleaned up quite well, thank you. As a result of the advice I received with my earlier problem, we installed WinPatrol on the system.

Given our previous experience, my son stopped the internet connection and has not used the computer since the alert.

Thanks so much for your response.

The system is described in my first post. I have not attempted to perform any removal or corrective measures since we received the error indications.

When I started the computer to obtain the new scans, I did experience another symptom. Windows explorer bombed, I was trying to copy and move a couple of files and I got the box that stated Windows Explorer experienced a problem and had to close, did I want to send an error report. I responded with dont send (we disabled the internet connection). I tried to open Windows explorer again and received the same box immediately.

Yet, I was able to save the logfiles to my USB drive. Here is the HJT log:

• Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

Thank you for generous and wise counsel.

I have performed the following steps:

1. Checked box item O18, filter hijack and ran HJT following your instructions. Closed HJT.

2. OTMoveIt2. Pasted under yellow bar and movedit according to your instructions. An interesting note; I got the OTMoveIt2 "Encountered a problem and needs to close" error box from windows (do you want to send a report) . I was still able to copy and paste the OTMoveIt2 report. But the program terminated abnormally. Results report attached below.

3. Malwarebytes, updated then scanned. One item found, report below.

4. Re-ran HJT. Item O18 is still listed. Not what I expected. Hmmmmm

I have not spent much time with the PC except for the procedures you have described. It was late last night when I finished the Malwarebytes scan and I shut down the system. The Microtrend Antivirus updated and there is a Windows update that is anxiously waiting. I thought you would want me to postpone that until we got through this.

I anxiously await your next instructions to lead me down the path on this scavanger hunt we share.

• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View Tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
• Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Click OK.

In addition, go to Start, Search.  When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom.
Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  
  • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  • Archives
  • Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
• Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
• Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Dear Chryssi2001,

Thank you for your prompt response. I began following your procedure and had some interesting observations. I had to go to work, so I have not completed the list but thought you might like to know what happened to this point. I ran ATF Cleaner, everything was fine. I ran JavaRa and it found an earlier version of Java and did its thing; the requested report follows. On closing JavaRa, WinPatrol alerted indicating that a file was attempting to rename an association, did I approve. I said no. On closing the dialoge box, there appeared another item on the desktop (it had been behind the WinPatrol box) with a name "scrap" I got a screen shot of both the WinPatrol dialogue and the scrap object properties saved as bmp. I uploaded the two files with this post.

Well, I thought the screen shots were uploaded. Evidently I missed something. It behaved as though the files were uploaded. If you wish to see them, please provide further guidance. Some reported properties of the scrap object:

Hello nodzoff,

JavaRa removes all old Java versions, including the registry keys for them. Win patrol asked you, because you should allow registry changes. JavaRa probably needed to do the proper changes, and you didn't allow them, so that scrap object was created.
First time this occurs.
JavaRa results report is in another file on your desktop?

What is that file? Can you open it in Notepad and see what it is?

You must post the screenshots as images.

Try to re-run JavaRa and this time allow any changes.
If a new report is created post it back.

I am providing a link to my screen shot images to clarify what I described to you. JavaRa had completed its processing and had been closed. There was a delay, then WinPatrol alerted. After you take a look at these and confirm my next direction, I will proceed. At this point I have not done anything since my last post.

When you click on post you will see the window i am writting now.
Below this window, and below Upload attachment you see:

If you wish to attach one or more files enter the details below.
In File name click on Browse and find the screenshot you want to attach from your pc.
Click on Add file and wait. As soon as the forum is ready the page will refresh. Then click on the submit below that box.

After that click the submit for your post.
I hope my instructions are clear, if there is something you don't understand please let me know.

Did you open that scrap file in Notepad to see what's in it?
