Unread postby EarlFlynn » August 30th, 2008, 8:33 am

Hi, newbie to all this, hope yu can help.

Problem first derected by Spybot S&D
It discovered Win32.Agenet.pz

I used Spybots "fix problems" but it was only able to "fix" the registry values but not the entry:
(SBI $B74832EE) Program directory
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wsnpoem\

On restarting the computer and re-scanning with Spyboy the registry values had again changed

Thanks
Flynn

Hello EarlFlynn,

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
----------------------------------------------
You have been infected by Infostealer.Banker.C, which allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data.

Infostealer.Banker.C INFO

I recommend that you disconnect this machine from the internet NOW!

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.
----------------------------------------------
After doing the above, post a new HijackThis log.

Hi, thanks for replying

I have since, based on recomendation used SDFix to help resolve the problem, although I, of couse, can't tell if that has fixed the problems. It des however no longer appear on Spybot.

Finally, my virus software (Norton) popped up a message asking for permission for "spoolsv.exe" to access the internet, I said no. Not sure if it's related.

Here are my new logs, Spybot and Hijackthis

Thanks again, Flynn

Hello EarlFlynn,

Yes it looks like the password stealer is gone after you run SDFix.

Depending of the path spoolsv.exe is legit >> link.
This is legit and shows in your HijackThis log.
>> C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe
Bolded part is the path. ;)

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Hello EarlFlynn,

I can't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use windows firewall.

FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.
Vista users, must check compatibility with Vista before installation.

FREE FIREWALLS
Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Hello again

I've done as you suggested. The Kaspersky log follow by HijackThis are below

However, please note I have used my Norton Internet Securitys 'quarantined file removal' facility to remove the files identified by Kaspersky located in the folder 'C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\'
I did this after the Kaspersky scan but before HijackThis. Sorry if this is getting ahead of myself, it just seemed an appropriate thing to do/something I should have done before. Hope this is okay and doesn't cause any problems.

For information, I use Norton as the firewall and the computer appears to be behaving fine.

Thanks again

Flynn

Hello EarlFlynn,

So your Symantec Internet Security includes a firewall.
You are fine then.

Good i would post for you to empty Norton's Internet Security quarantee folder.
----------------------------------------------
CLEAN JAVA CACHE FOLDER
Please follow these instructions carefully to clean java cache:
how to clean java cache
----------------------------------------------
Please remove this file from your desktop and empty your Recycle-Bin.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\catchme.zip

Remove JavaRa and the report it created.
----------------------------------------------
Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

SDFix will be removed too.

Please download OTMoveIt2 and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
----------------------------------------------
Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!
