How do I remove TROJ_VUNDO.JAA?

Unread postby ldmitch » August 30th, 2008, 5:25 pm

My Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security has detected the virus Troj_Vundo.JAA on my computer, but is unable to quarantine the file and does not provide any other useful instructions. I have also done some internet searches, but I have been unable to find a manual removal solution.

I would greatly appreciate your help! Thank you!

The path and file that is infected is C:\Windows\System32\_C004CA29.dat

The HijackThis log is:

Re: How do I remove TROJ_VUNDO.JAA?

Welcome Idmitch

I will be helping you under the guidance of one of our expert coaches.
Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Please Note: My instructions to you are checked by an expert prior to posting. This may cause a small delay between posts.
Thanks
John

Move HiJackThis
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own in the root directory, not the Desktop . When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Go to your My Documents folder, right-click and select New > Folder then name the folder HJT.
  • Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Fix HiJackThis Entries
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on do a system scan only
  • Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank <<<<----------------------------------------- Fix if you did not set yourself
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [A00F708B86.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\_A00F708B86.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present <<<<----------------------------------------- Fix if you did not set yourself
O20 - Winlogon Notify: __c004CA29 - C:\WINDOWS\system32\__c004CA29.dat

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.

ATF Cleaner
Download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Reboot your computer.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
