Below the log I include a bit of history with this which I am sure is relevant.

*********************************************************************************
Last Monday 11August I clicked on a Google link which I didn’t know wasn’t genuine. This action caused a scam scan which froze up that particular page. This was not the first time a scam scan had cropped up (it is about the 3rd time in 3 months) however the previous 2 times I could cancel/reject/close the window. This time I couldn’t click on any option to get rid of the unwanted page. Quite unnerved I turned to my antivirus***forum for assistance. At that stage I was running just avast and whatever protection came with my computer (with Vista loaded) when purchased. – Windows Firewall and Windows Defender.
At avast! (thread can be found by searching nicla titled “unauthorised scan activated) I am very grateful for the help received from principally 2 other users who coached me through various steps over the succeeding days to a state where things were no longer dangerous. Since ceasing putting posts on that site I have been researching computer safety on the Net (at a basic level for much of it goes zooming overhead) and this is how I arrived here.
I know that my computer is not working at its optimal best as a series of glitches have appeared (that were not present before my troubles started.
Security programmes now installed as a consequence of advice received at avast! are PCTools Firewall, ThreatFire, MalwareBytes, RogueRomover, SuperAntiSpyware. I now use the computer as a standard user (with a separate Admin a/c). I also installed Windows Live during this period.
Below is a list of some of the things that the computer has been throwing at me just after this all started
*Couldn’t open Firefox on a number of occasions(I use IE very very infrequently) “server not found” though the internet was working fine on another computer using the same ISP.
*I can now only open one computer (explorer) window at a time; whereas before I could have multiple windows.
*a number of times Windows Explorer has locked up advising that windows wasn’t working properly and then promptly shut down every Windows application open at that stage.
*Excel and Word at one stage froze up a couple of times with a not responding notice. (it is working “fine” now)
*2 days ago when I went to shut down the computer at the end of day’s use it took ages to process (it appeared jammed). I booted it which took me to some options and eventually I shut it down.
*Both Excel and Word opened in “safemode” the next day.
*KeNotify MFC Application has stopped working correctly. Windows will close programme and notify you if a solution is available
*I have had trouble switching between accounts with the computer jamming on a black screen as it tries to leave my account. I then need to boot it.
*At times it has operated quite slowly compared to what I am used to with it.
*Another time I couldn’t access any shutdown options. The red button was absent and clicking on the start menu access button was futile.
*At another startup the following appeared “Toshiba Reg.exe – application error. ProcessID=0-54(3156), ThreadID=Oxe2c(3628).
*Last night I put computer into hibernate mode and this morning no applications would open from the desktop or the startup menu. (other than Skype and IE). The Security applications from a desktop file wouldn’t open yet I could open their icons from the tray.
Thank you.
I apologise for the long winded post but I wanted to provide much information to give a better picture.
***PS I just saw the sticky on multi posting on different forums. Even though I have been on the avast! forum there is no discussion about the above problems on that forum.
