Same thing. The Control Panel is altered and missing control options. Control panel actually has a couple of icons from Antivirus XP 2008. Funky bright blue screen as a background (same thing with user Robert M.)

Hi
I think your administrator account is OK. I think the symptoms you are experiencing are primarily due to malware in other accounts.

For all of the following instructions, please place separate users logs in separate posts (as with the HijackThis logs you just posted) with the username at the beginning of the post.

Robert M.

Please open HijackThis
Click Scan Only
Place checkmarks against the following:
  • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
  • O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1
Close ALL open programs except HijackThis
Click Fix checked

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

ComboFix disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before ComboFix completes its run. If ComboFix runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine

Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Susan L.

Open HijackThis
Click Scan Only
Place a checkmark against the following:
  • O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
Close ALL open programs except HijackThis
Click Fix checked

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
    The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and Paste the log into your next reply

Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

===============================
In your next reply can I please see the following:
Robert M.
  • C:\ComboFix.txt
  • a new HijackThis log and a description of the behaviour of the account
Susan L.
  • mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • a new HijackThis log and a description of the behaviour of the account

Robert M:

Robert M. Acct: Appears to have restored the complete control panel I can see no other issues at this time. The computer is slow or sluggish in Bringing up a Firefox Mozilla browser, but once one is up and running subsequent browsers are more readily (speedily) opened.

Susan L. Acct.: Her control panel has "My Documents" and "My Computer" but is missing
the following: "My Music" "My Network" "My Pictures"
Otherwise I have no issues to report but I will know more once she begins using her acct. this weekend. The computer is slow or sluggish in Bringing up a Firefox Mozilla browser, but once one is up and running subsequent browsers are more readily (speedily) opened.

Hi

I believe this is not due to malicious software, but more a computer performance issue. You have quite a few programs starting with Windows, not all of them are totally necessary. When you are clean I can give you more information about this.

This account looks clean :D

UNINSTALL COMBOFIX

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

Action needs to be taken with the Malwarebytes' scan which should resolve the folder issues.

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
  • Click the Update tab and click Check for Updates.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected <- This is important as it should resolve your symptoms
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
    The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and Paste the log into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log and a description of the account behaviour

Robert M. The only problem I encountered this evening was internet connectivity issues. I could not get Firefox to successfully connect. I continually received an error message that the server could not find what I was looking for. That I either had network connection issues or my firewall was not allowing Firefox to be a browser. I then opened an IE browser and got the same issue. IE offered to "diagnose the connectivity issues" and after a 20 second "diagnosis" reported to me that my "network connectivity" had been "restored". And so it was!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Susan L - The only issue here is that when I try to open an IE browser it says, "Blank Page" and the URL is Blank:Page.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Until I am able to use the accts more fully- these are the only issues I am aware of.

Thanks, Again, Matt! Good Job! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hi

Susan L.

Please open HijackThis
Click Scan Only
Place checkmarks against the following:
  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
Close ALL open programs except HijackThis
Click Fix Checked
Please let me know if this resolves your connectivity problem.

Run Windows Cleanup.
Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.
Right click the Recycle Bin icon and Empty the Recycle Bin

Now, in Windows Explorer, delete all the files in the following folders. Please do NOT delete the folders themselves, just all the files that they contain.
C:\Windows\Prefetch\
C:\Windows\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Username>\Local Settings\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\<All other Usernames>\Local Settings\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Username>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
C:\Documents and Settings\<All other Usernames>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

After this you should run the Windows Disk Defragmenter:
Click Start > Control Panel
Select Administrator tools
Click Defragmentation
Run the Defragment option
NOTE: This may take quite some time during which your computer will perform very slowly

Please let me know if that resolves your performance issues.

Matt~

Connectivity appears to be good. Emptying the recommended files helped immensely in terms of system speed. I'm defragmenting as I write this. So far so good! Looking good!
Now I'm trying to decide what software to download. I'm considering WinPatrol, NoScript, Bitdefender 10 Free Antivirus, Haute Secure, AVG Anti-Rootkit, ZoneAlarm Firewall, etc etc.

There seems to be alot of good freeware to choose from but I am aware that I cannot overload the system with too much overlapping or I will slow my system down. I just want a good firewall, an anti-virus, a cleaner, maybe Malwarebytes should be left on my system?

I am aware that MRU students and graduates are not supposed to make recommendations but it would be helpful to the uninitiated to have a list of freeware that is safe, effective, powerful and to have the list updated regularly as the landscape of malware changes.
It seems to me that I have tried ZoneAlarm previously and it was problematic for me.
Also, I uninstalled Webroot based on your recommendation that it was a rogue program even though I "bought" it but I see that it is recommended on eWeek.com as a powerful tool to utilize. So I have alot of confusion about this. I'm going to spend some time this weekend reading and trying to make some choices.

Thanks for all your help....I am NOT assuming that we are done...(?) but I AM thanking you for what you HAVE done for me! Thanks, Matt!

Hi
I'm sorry if I confused you about Webroot, it is a legitimate program. I asked you to temporarily remove Webroot to prevent it from blocking the changes that needed to be made in order to eradicate the malware from your system.
You currently have Avira Antivirus installed which is a free program. If the Webroot product you bought has antivirus you can swap programs (uninstall Avira AntiVir, then install Webroot).

The following is the speech that I give when someone is clean, it gives a list of recommended products that should be OK together.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
    Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  5. Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
    http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?act=dscript&CODE=showdetails&f_id=5
A short distance down the page in the center, click on the Download button.
    Agree to the license.
On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word "Hosts Manager" choose "Save Target As" and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop.
Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager

After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop).
When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the Right side of the bar labeled "Options and Tools",
Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
In the Left Pane, click Download.
It will load 70,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save.
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

If you have a separate third party Firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.
  6. Install WinPatrol - Download and install Winpatrol by BillP Studios.
This program can monitor what software start with Windows. You can delay startup for some programs and stop malicious programs from starting up. It can also view some hidden files.
    Download it from here
  7. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  8. Install ThreatFire - Download and install ThreatFire. This program defends against malware by detecting certain malicious behaviours. It is configured "out-of-the-box" and acts as a complement to your Antivirus software. It can be downloaded here:
    PC Tools ThreatFire
  9. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
