Malware Pros:
For the past few days I have been fighting with a virus/spyware/trojan on my computer that must have gotten in through McAfee.

I have done all of the recommended steps to clear my computer but still can't get rid of the effects.

The screen saver has been taken over with their message:
Windows Warning Message
Warning! Spyware detected on your computer
Win32/Adware.Virtumonde Detected
Win32/PrivacyRemoveer.M64 Detected

Also get a VBS/FakeAlert-AB Trojan
DocumentsandSettings/owner/localsettings/temp/.tt5.tmp.vbs

Additionally I get a License Agreement screen that is awaiting my approval (But only allows you to accept - not decline the license agreement) -- I Ctrl-Alt-Del out of it.
It is Antivirus XP 2008 License Agreement from Pandora Software called Innovagest 2000
when I exit out it gives a message about End Task .ttA7.tmp.exe

Also, I get a message from my Spyware protection that it has found a problem (every time I start up) with:
C:\\Windows\System32\blphcr77j0evdr.scr\GenericPUP.d

Lastly, I have been getting a blue screen that makes it appear that my system is rebooting with a very long system message that starts off with a statement about:
BOGUS.driver
If I CTRL-ALT-DEL out of it, it takes me back to what I was doing.

My name is Matt and I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

Hi

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Hi Matt,
I took your advice and I reloaded my OS and reformatted the disk.
This issue should hopefully be closed.
Do you have a recommendation on a security protection software? I thought that I was protected with the McAfee software that comes with my aol subscription.

REFORMAT & REINSTALL

Then there are a couple of things you should do immediately after installing Windows and before surfing the net...
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
    Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Download and Install a HOSTS File
    A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

    Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):

    A short distance down the page in the center, click on the Download button.
    Agree to the license.
    On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word "Hosts Manager" choose "Save Target As" and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop.
    Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager

    After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop).
    When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the Right side of the bar labeled "Options and Tools",
    Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
    In the Left Pane, click Download.
    It will load 70,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save.
    You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

    If you have a separate third party Firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.
  • Install WinPatrol - Download and install Winpatrol by BillP Studios.
    This program can monitor what software start with Windows. You can delay startup for some programs and stop malicious programs from starting up. It can also view some hidden files.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
