Not a double post ... different computer, different log

Unread postby quikquil » August 14th, 2008, 6:05 pm

Hi,

Yesterday, I posted two HiJackThis files from two computers that got hit by the CNN / Antivirus. One of my posts was closed, marked that is was a double post. It's not a double post. I have two different computers with two different HiJackThis logs.

So, this is the log that was closed before review. I really appreciate any help you can offer.

Please review my log and let me know if you see anything suspicious in it.

Thanks in advance,
Val

Hi quikquil, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. Please note that I am still in training at Malware Removal University, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

HiJackThis logs do take some time to review and research. I would appreciate it if while you are waiting, you could please do the following for me:

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

I am reviewing your log now, and will be back with you shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Ken

Unread postby quikquil » August 21st, 2008, 7:51 pm

Hi Ken,

I think I made a huge mistake and confused my hijackthis logs and you might be looking at a log for the wrong computer. I really hope that you haven't spent too much time on this yet. I can't apologize enough!! I became confused because two of my computers were hit and I posted two different logs only to have one of them deleted so that I had to post a third.

If you're willing to give me another shot, I'll post a new hijackthis log tomorrow morning.

Thank you and, again, I'm so sorry.

Re: Not a double post ... different computer, different log

Unread postby ktreffin » August 22nd, 2008, 1:32 pm

Hi Val,

Thanks for posting the new log. Is the uninstall list that you posted the correct one for this computer? I just want to double check and make sure.

I don't see a lot in your HijackThis log. Let's do a couple of things:

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Manager Service, click Remove.

How to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
    • Open AOL
    • Go to Help on the toolbar
    • Select About AOL
    • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.

Hi Ken,

Yes, the uninstall list was the correct one; I got that right, at least. ;)

I got rid of Viewpoint. It doesn't look like I have any AOL applications installed on my computer anymore (to me, at least). Although, I do still have the files if I want to install it (I don't use AOL so I won't be installing it.).

Logs are posted below.
Thanks!
Val

Re: Not a double post ... different computer, different log

Unread postby ktreffin » August 23rd, 2008, 9:53 am

Hi Val,

Yes, the uninstall list was the correct one; I got that right, at least. ;)

 No problem. Like I said, just thought I had better double check.....

So far so good. Malwarebytes' came back clean which is good.

Question for you:

Are you familiar with photographersdirect.com? You have two entries for this website under the "Trusted Zone". Really you don't want miscellaneous web sites listed in this area as it gives that website a lot of privileges that they shouldn't really have and can create a security issue. Please let me know if you are familiar with this, and if you would like to remove it.

Here are the next things that we need to do:

Step #1: Update Java using JavaRa

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to your desktop by changing the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Now close the window.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the JavaRa Log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,
Ken

Hey Ken,

Yes, I'm familiar with Photographer's Direct. It's a website for stock photography that I use often. If you recommend changing the settings for it, then I will.

Thank you!!!!
Val

Unread postby ktreffin » August 26th, 2008, 9:56 am

Hi Val,

Looks like Java is updated and the Kaspersky scan came back clean. Can you do me a favor? Please post a new HijackThis log, but make sure word wrap is turned off. It will be much easier to review your log, and save my eyes in the process!! When Notepad opens with the new log, click on the Format menu at the top and make sure Word Wrap is Un-checked.

Thanks,
Ken

Re: Not a double post ... different computer, different log

Unread postby ktreffin » August 26th, 2008, 4:31 pm

Congratulations Val, Your Log appears to be clean! Image

How is your system running? Are you still having problems? Please let me know if any problems still exist before moving on.

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like Windows Updates) have to be done, the others are optional.

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your Anti Virus Software - I would highly recommend that you set your Anti-Virus software to update automatically. Most Anti-Virus programs will update at least once a day, and frequently more than once a day. If you notice that it isn't updating itself regularly and frequently, you should check to make sure your anti-virus subscription has not expired (if it's a paid subscription) or that your settings have not spontaneously changed.

Turn on "Automatic Updates" - In order to make sure your system stays up to date, I recommend that you turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature. To turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature please do the following:
  • Click Start and choose Control Panel
  • In the control panel double click "Automatic Updates"
  • Make sure "Automatic (recommended)" is ticked
  • set the time that you would like to check for updates
  • Click "OK"

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer including those for Microsoft Office, etc. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial here:
WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
Opera

Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted!
Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints called Malware Complaints. Hey Ken,

Glad to hear that my computer looks clean. I appreciate all you have done. I followed your instructions in the last email.

I only have one concern -- my System Restore hasn't worked in about 18 months. I did delete the old restore points and made a new one called All Clean. But any time in the last year and half that I've tried to restore back to any of the restore points that it let me make, I get a message saying that it's unable to restore.

Can you recommend another program that would serve the same purpose?

Otherwise, everything else seems to be running smoothly.

You're the best, Ken!!!!! Thank you, again!!
