Hi and Thanks to whomever can help.

Running XP SP2, connected through a Linksys Router. Primarily use Firefox as my browser, but my wife requires IE for access to a company database. Unsure of specifics. Attached below is my hijackthis.log. Hoping someone can help. Yes, I am running an Apache server - my work has eBay blacklisted, so this is my workaround for that.

Problem is I keep getting the same pop-up ad every 10-15 mins. This started about 4 days ago. Nothing special happened on that day as far as I'm aware. I tried to download Adaware, and got fooled by this "AdWare Alert". I installed it, it wanted money to fix the 402 "infections" it found and I realized it's not what I wanted. There was no uninstall, so I deleted the directory and removed the icons, and rebooted. I saved this scan (posted) and used hijackthis to delete the line. So far, no more pop ups but it seems to come and go.

Please take a look and let me know if there's anything out of place.

Re: Pop-up help, Recently started. Log included.

Unread postby Shaba » August 25th, 2008, 2:01 am

We will begin with ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Also, please note that the pop-ups seem to only occur when Explorer is running. I can't say 100% that it never pops up on it's own, but seemingly only when my wife is using Explorer. Don't know if that's important, but too much info is better than not enough.

Thanks again,

We do not run seperate users, just one. The only other User is the Admin account, which I only use to correct problems like this one :)

Thanks!

Thanks for the info.

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

uTorrent

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Delete these:

C:\Documents and Settings\-Noltz-\Application Data\uTorrent
C:\Program Files\uTorrent

Empty Recycle Bin.

Please run a new HJT scan when finished and post the log back here.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
