CNN/Antivirus infection removal verification help

Unread postby quikquil » August 13th, 2008, 9:44 pm

This computer was infected with the CNN trojan. I *think/hope* that I got rid of it. I ran HijackThis and was hoping that some one would take a look and tell me if there's anything that should cause me alarm. I really appreciate your help!!

I also noticed that several of the websites I maintain had infected files uploaded to them the day of, and the day following, the computer infection.

Thank you in advance,
Val

Unread postby John B. » August 19th, 2008, 1:18 pm

Hi! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is John Brouwer - if it helps, you can call me John for short. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

First of all I see that you ran HijackThis in Safe Mode. Normally, HijackThis is run in Normal Mode. Next time you are using HijackThis please do it in Normal Mode :)

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.

These rules are good for you to know:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • If you don't reply within five days after my last instructions this topic will be closed. If you will not be able to reply within five days please tell me so the topic will not be closed.

These rules are to make my voluntary work more comfortable:
  • Please be patient. The work I do is voluntary and I also have a private life (school, work, friends and hobbies).
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Also, don't post logs as attachments. Other helpers like to view the logs as well and opening a lot of attachments is irritating. It can also contain malware.

Finally, please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Open The Misc Tool Section button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop and post the contents in a reply to this topic. Also post a fresh HijackThis log as the other one is fairly old now.

Greets, John.

Re: CNN/Antivirus infection removal verification help

Unread postby John B. » August 19th, 2008, 3:32 pm

Hi Val,

Your logs look clean. Let's run some more scans.

You aren't running Firewall Software. Please download and install one of them first!

Use a Firewall - Using a Firewall on your computer can be very important. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. There are some different situations you can be in where a third-party firewall may or may not be a good addition to your system:
  • If you are not using Windows XP or Vista, but an older version I recommend you to use a firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista, but are on dial-up I recommend you to use a firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista and are using broadband, but are not experienced in using firewalls and getting the choice to allow or disallow things I recommend you to use Windows Firewall.
  • If you are using Windows XP or Vista, are using broadband and experienced, I recommend you to disable Windows Firewall (as it is not perfect) and get a third-party firewall.

Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Kerio Personal Firewall (Free version after 30 days)
Online Armor Free

Or you could buy their paid version online or in a shop nearby:
Kerio Personal Firewall (Continue paid version after 30 days)
Online Armor or Online Armor AV+ with Anti-Virus included

As you did this, we can begin with the fix.

Step 1: Disable A-Squared Guard
Please disable A-Squared Guard as it may interfere with the fix. To disable A-Squared Guard:
  • Open A-Squared.
  • Click on Configure Background-Guard.
  • Deselect Enable background guard on system startup.
  • Close the window.
  • Close A-Squared.
Note: Reverse this process after your malware removal is complete.

Step 2: Disable Ad-Aware 2007 Service
Please disable the Ad-Aware 2007 Service as it may interfere with the fix.
  • On your desktop, click Start.
  • Choose Run.
  • Type services.msc in the open box and click OK or press Enter.
  • Scroll down the list of services and double-click Ad-Aware 2007 Service.
  • In the service properties window that opens, click the STOP button.
  • Under Startup Type, use the pull down menu and select Manual from the list of options.
  • Click OK and exit the Services Control Manager.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings.

Step 3: Disable Teatimer
Please disable Teatimer as it may interfere with the fix.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings in TeaTimer.

Step 4: Reboot your computer
This is for the changes we made to the programs to take effect.

Step 5: Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO
CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

Step 6: Download and Run ComboFix
Before you download the newest version of ComboFix please make sure there's no older version of ComboFix on your desktop! If there is one, please delete it.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop!

Now close any open browsers. Also close/disable all anti virus programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. For information on how to do that for your programs see this webpage:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

When finished, it will produce a report for you. This report will also be saved in C:\ComboFix.txt

Note: Remember to re-enable your anti virus program.

Step 7: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Step 8: Post logs
Please post the following logs as a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • ComboFix log
  • MalwareBytes' log

Re: CNN/Antivirus infection removal verification help

Unread postby John B. » August 20th, 2008, 7:22 am

Hi Val,

There were three hidden files. They do not seem very dangerous, but I would like to check them out. Also, the Recovery Console has to be installed in case something goes wrong in the future with your computer. Having the Recovery Console on board is always a good thing :)

Please copy the fix to Word, or print it, because you won't always have internet access!

Step 1: Install Recovery Console
Before you download the newest version of ComboFix please make sure there's no older version of ComboFix on your desktop! If there is one, please delete it.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop!

Now go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System (select Windows XP Service Pack 2 when you are running Service Pack 3).

Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named on your desktop next to ComboFix.exe.

Image

Now close any open browsers. Also close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. For information on how to do that for your programs see this webpage:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
  • At the next prompt, click Yes to run the full ComboFix scan. Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

    Image
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. This report will also be saved in C:\ComboFix.txt

Note: Remember to re-enable your anti virus program.

Step 2: Download and Run Gmer
Download Gmer to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Disconnect from internet and close running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double click gmer.exe.
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say Ok.
If no warning....
Click the rootkit tab
To the right of the program you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked... leave everything checked. Then click the Scan button. Wait for the scan to finish.
Once done click the Copy button.
Open Notepad and hit ctrl+v to paste the log. Save the log to your desktop please.

Step 3: Post logs
Please post the following logs in a reply to this topic (use multiple posts if needed):
  • Fresh HijackThis log
  • ComboFix log
  • Gmer log

Hi John,

I'll paste the three logs below. On a side note, on the same day, my desktop computer was hit harder than this laptop with the same virus. I posted a topic here but it was deleted because it looked like a duplicate post, even though it's for a different computer. I reposted it on Thu 14 Aug, 2008 2:05 pm (it's on pg 3).

I completely understand waiting my turn. Any chance you can take a look at it when my turn comes up or when you have the opportunity? You've been such a help with this laptop; I'd feel so much more confident having your eyes on my desktop.

Thanks for your consideration. Here are the logs ... ::drumroll please::

Re: CNN/Antivirus infection removal verification help

Hi Val,

You can bring your topic under attention very easily:

In that little forum all helpers look first before they take any topics in the big forum with all the logs. Don't be scared if somebody else helps you, because we are all experts :)

Your logs look clean and the suspicious files seem to be gone. There are only a couple of things left to do.

Step 1: Update Adobe Reader
It looks like your version of Adobe Reader is out of date and you're vulnarable for infections.
Please download the newest version here:
http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/r ... _en_US.exe

During the install make sure you don't install the Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition if you don't want it. Then go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any older versions that may remain.

Step 2: Update Java
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
First remove the older versions:
  • Download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Now let's download and install the newest version:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Click on Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Reboot your computer.

Step 3: Post logs
Please post the following things in a reply to this topic:
  • Tell me if you are still having the/any problems with this computer
  • Fresh HijackThis log
  • JavaRa log

Greets, John.

Hi John,

I created that new topic and I have my fingers crossed; thanks.

I'll post the two logs below. The only problem I'm having now is that, starting yesterday, I've been getting the dreaded blue screen. It started yesterday afternoon and happened twice. This morning it happened once.

Since the virus, I've been having that problem on my desktop computer, also. In that circumstance, though, the first two times I saw the blue screen it was part of the virus. My understanding is that it tries to trick you into rebooting. But, the last time I had the blue screen on that computer, it appeared legit.

So, I don't know if there's a connection, but I thought I'd let you know.

Here's the JavaRa:

John,

I've noticed a pattern with the blue screen. It happens when I eject disks and plug in/eject thumb drives. Just in case it helps to know.

Thanks!

Hi Val,

BSODs should not be part of the cleaning process ;) Let's see if we can find the exact message. Next time please note the information which is being displayed when a BSOD occurs. Most important is the related file and the codes, but the whole message would be best of course :)

Step 1: Check Event Viewer logs
By viewing the Event Viewer logs we could maybe find out what is wrong.
  • Go to Start
  • Click on Run
  • In the box, type eventvwr
  • Look at the System and Application log files and note at least two that are made at about the time you got one of the BSODs
  • We need to know the Event ID and Source

Step 2: Check Device Manager
In Device Manager we can find out if anything is wrong with one of your devices.
  • Right-click on My Computer
  • Click Manage
  • Now click on Device Manager
  • Expand all the sections and check them for any exclamation marks. Make a note of it.
  • We need to know the section where the device was found and the name of the device.

Hi John,

Thanks for continuing to take a look at this for me!

This is information from the System Tab:
Source: System Error
Event ID: 1003

Description:
Error code 1000007e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 806e494f, parameter3 ba507c30, parameter4 ba50792c.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last thing to happen in the Application tab each time before the System Error is:
Source: avg8emc
Event ID: 1

Description:
The description for Event ID ( 1 ) in Source ( avg8emc ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the Device Manager:

No exclamation points. Everything looks normal to me, except for 2 "x" in my Network Adapters, which I think have been there for years.
1394 Net Adapter and Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller.

If it happens again, I'll take a photo of the screen and let you know all the specifics.
Thanks,
Val

Hi Val,

Thanks for the logs. You said that you know when the BSOD occurs, so can you try to reproduce the BSOD? That would be good. If you are able to get it, no matter whether on purpose or not, please make a note of the whole message (or make a clear photo like you said).

The error message from the System part you posted has to do something with a faulty driver. If the name of the driver is being displayed when the BSOD occurs it would be great :)

Please let me know.

Mission Accomplished, John! I never thought I'd be happy to see the BSOD. ;)
Thanks,
Val

Here's what it said:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen

appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation,

ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory

options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components,

restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance Startup Options, and turn select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:
***STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x8A449790, 0x8A449904, 0x805D13B6)

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.

Hi,

How do you like my new color XD

Today I have been researching the BSOD. It seems that it can have a lot of different causes. Personally I think it is faulty hardware (your disk drive), but I can only guess at the cause.

There are people I know who are much more experienced with these things and who can help you safer than I do with this problem. I suggest you use the following link to go to the CastleCops General Computer Problems forum for help from a CastleCops SRT...

http://www.castlecops.com/f120-General_ ... blems.html

I recommend that you register before posting your problem. Registered members can receive notification when there has been a reply to their topic. It would be best to tell exactly what your problem is, when it happens and the exact message of the BSOD like you posted here. Maybe linking to this topic would help as well.

Other than that I can only give you the All Clean speech. If you think you're clean please give one more reply so that I can archive this topic.

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like removing dangerous tools and Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional (beginning with Spybot S &D).

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:
  • Uninstall tools - The following will not only uninstall ComboFix but also clean up some other dangerous tools and backups.
    • Download OTCleanIt from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/ol ... leanIt.exe to your desktop.
    • Click the OTCleanIt icon on your desktop.
    • Click the CleanUp button.
    • If you get any pop ups asking if it is OK let the program proceed.
    • At the end the program will ask to let it reboot the computer. Let it do so.
You may delete any logs left on the desktop.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. You can download it here:
    SpywareBlaster

  • Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
    WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

  • Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial here:
    WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

  • Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
    Opera

  • Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
    Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.

>> Here << you can see how you can help us.

May your God go with you..

John.
