Antivirus 2008/2009 and random popups...grr!

Unread postby LesleyMoon » August 17th, 2008, 6:10 pm

Okay so the past couple of days I've been noticing some wonky activity with my comp. Its been superslow lately, but I thought that was due the the age of my comp and it needing more memory. But the past few days, its been popping up random windows, even when I don't have a browser open. And yesterday was the last straw. I can't access my yahoo email! What the what? I've run a few antivirals, to no avail. My McAfee wouldn't work correctly...I tried Kaspersky's and it just quit before it finished the scan. So...I need the wonderful help and assistance of you wonderful people! This is my HiJackThis log....can my comp be saved??

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

Your version of HiJackThis is out of date. The latest version is 2.0.2.

Please uninstall HJT 1.99.1 before installing 2.0.2

Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Close HijackThis

Step # 1 Download CCleaner

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the ccsetup.exe file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location.
  • Under Install Options, choose all the default settings except I would recommend that you unclick/untick install the Yahoo! Toolbar, unless you want it. You can also Uncheck the 'Automatically check for updates' box.
  • Click Install then finish to complete installation.

Step # 2 Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner

Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Step # 3: Download and Run ComboFix

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Be sure to save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleaning the system:

CCleaner Install List
C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

You mentioned McAfee in your first post in this thread. I didn't see any McAfee entries in the CCleaner Install List. Did you uninstall McAfee? If so, what are you using for Anti-Virus? If you have no Anti-Virus, follow the instructions below. If you do have an Anti-Virus, let me know what it is and you can ignore the instructions below:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these vendors NOW:

1)Antivir PersonalEdition Classic
2)avast! 4 Home Edition

Download and install only one!

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire
BitLord

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u7.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Remove the following old versions of Java:

  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 2: Run CFScript

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Code: Select all
    KILLALL::

    File::

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\4LU7K1qI.exe.a_a
    C:\Program Files\temp01

    Folder::

    C:\Program Files\BitLord
    C:\Program Files\LimeWire

    Registry::

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "AlcxMonitor"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]
    "AppInit_DLLs"=""

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    Image

Note: This CFScript is for use on LesleyMoon's computer only! Do not use it on your computer.

  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. ComboFix Log that appears after Step 2 has been completed
2 A fresh HiJackThis Log taken after Step 2 has been completed

Yes, I do. I have been away the past few days, just now catching up and I will get going on those things shortly! Thanks so much, again!

Looking over your latest HJT logs I see you have remnants of Norton and McAfee on your computer. These need to be removed.

Download the Norton Removal Tool to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.

Next, download the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool and save it to your Desktop. Do not run it yet.

Now after the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool has been downloaded, run the Norton Removal Tool. Reboot your computer once it finishes.

Once you're computer boots up again double-click MCPR.exe to start the McAfee removal tool and reboot your computer once it is finished.

Step # 1 Remove Logitech Desktop Messenger

You appear to have a program on your system called Logitech® Desktop Messenger. This is a background process that can automatically access the Internet without your knowledge or permission. Although it does provide updates for your Logitech products, the fact that it can access the Internet without your consent is potentially dangerous. It does download and update your Logitech products but this can be done manually by visiting the Logitech web site. My advice would be to uninstall this program (Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs) but this is entirely your decision. I suggest doing all updates yourself and removing this application!

Step #2 Run CCleaner

CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!

  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
  • In the Windows Tab:
  • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
  • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
  • Clean all entries in the System section
  • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
  • Clean any others that you choose
  • In the Applications Tab:
  • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
  • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
  • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
  • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO

Step # 3: Remove Hijackthis Entries

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step # 4 Download and Run OTMoveIt2

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At25.job
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\4LU7K1qI.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Step # 5 Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
  • Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:
  • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
  • Click Open.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. OTMoveIT2 Log
2. MalwareBytes' Log
3. A fresh HiJackThis Log

Re: Antivirus 2008/2009 and random popups...grr!

Unread postby km2357 » August 24th, 2008, 3:33 pm

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

  • First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Step # 2: Remove Hijackthis Entries

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Warning] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDWarn.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Warning] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDWarn.exe (User 'Default user')

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step # 3: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

Re: Antivirus 2008/2009 and random popups...grr!

Unread postby km2357 » August 25th, 2008, 2:40 pm

My comp is doing...somewhat better. It does seem to be running a bit faster, but I am still getting some random popups here and there.

When do these popups occur? As soon as you open your browser? Or do they occur when you visit certain websites or do they just appear at random?

Step # 1: Add/Remove Programs

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Fashion Star (remove only)
Jojos Fashion Show (remove only)
Jojo's Fashion Show 2 Las Cruces (remove only)
iWin Games (remove only)

Reboot your Computer.

Step # 2 Run OTMoveIt2

  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\jojos-fashion-show-setup.exe
    C:\Program Files\iWin.com
    C:\Program Files\iWin Games

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. OTMoveIT2 Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. Let me know if you are still getting popups after doing the steps 1 and 2
