Unread postby bfield99 » July 22nd, 2008, 8:38 am

Well here I am again for the team of Kniights in Shiny Armour to fix my problem. Different computer, extra security .. same kids!

The syste, has been progressively getting slower. McAfee runs constantly and updated daily but 2 trojans got through. Nortons showed up Vundoo but the Vista fix couldn't find it. Main problems are system is slow and shut down/ boot up very slow. Thanks in advance for any help.

Unread postby Carolyn » July 23rd, 2008, 2:40 pm

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

I am currently looking at your log now and will be back as soon as possible with your instructions.
while you are waiting one other thing that can be of good use is an uninstall list so please do the following

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Right click on HijackThis and click Run as administrator
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Hello,

You have two antivirus programs on your computer.

Norton Security Scan
McAfee SecurityCenter

I do realize that Symantec says that Norton Security Scan will co-exist nicely with most other Antivirus programs, but I feel strongly that it should be uninstalled. Once we know that your computer is clean, I will make suggestions regarding programs that would enhance your computer's security without having a big impact on performance.

When you have more than one antivirus programs running at the same time, they conflict with each other rendering the computer vulnerable or unusable. It may even cause crashes. Please review this information:
Should you run more than one antivirus program at the same time?
Microsoft recommends that you have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer.

Antivirus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two antivirus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple antivirus programs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. Running two antivirus programs at the same time could lead to both of them trying to scan the same file at the same time, scan the same email at the same time and so on which could lead to conflicts.

REMOVE Norton Security Scan
  • Go to start > control panel > programs and features.
  • Right click on:

    Norton Security Scan

  • Click Uninstall & then follow the prompts to remove it.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  1. Right click on mbam-setup.exe and select Run as administrator
  2. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  3. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  4. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  5. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  6. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  7. Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  8. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Right click on dss.exe and select Run as administrator, then follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Please post the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log along with the contents of main.txt and extra.txt.

Re: Dell Inspiron with Vista running slow and very slow shutdown

Unread postby Carolyn » July 25th, 2008, 3:49 pm

Hello,

I'm still seeing remnants of Symantec in your log:

REMOVE NORTON
Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for your own version.

Next,
Download CCleaner from here and save it to your desktop.

Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
  • Right click on CCleaner and select Run as administrator
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO
CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

Next,
Right click on your favourite web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc) and select Run As Administrator to run it.

Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Please post the following:
  • The Kaspersky report
  • A fresh HijackThis log
  • A description of how your computer is behaving

Re: Dell Inspiron with Vista running slow and very slow shutdown

Unread postby bfield99 » July 28th, 2008, 12:54 am

Hi Caroline

Well the computer is running much better. The CC Cleaner seemed to have made the biggest difference and I ran it on each account.

Its still a fair bit slower than when we last reformatted it 6 months ago but certainly bearable now. Once we have finished here I am going to remove MacAfee and replace it with AVG as i have heard it is good and has a lower resource use. May even get a disk key and use the Ready Boost but at least we are cleaning up the rubbish in the background that would slow it forever. The Kapersky scan came back with 0 infections and I have attached a refreshed HijackThis below. I still get the SpywareDetector Explorer page loading on start up so it would be good to get rid of that and any last things you see below.

Thanks
Bradley

Re: Dell Inspiron with Vista running slow and very slow shutdown

Unread postby Carolyn » July 28th, 2008, 4:00 pm

Hello,

I agree it will be a good move to uninstall McAfee after we are done working on your computer. It is a bit of a resource hog. You'll probably see a noticable improvement in the computer's performance after you switch AV's. Also, Vista has an acceptable 2-way firewall. You probably do not need a third party firewall.

I think we should go ahead and remove SpywareDetector. This is the first time I've come across that program. It was considered a rogue at one time, although it seems to have improved it's reputation.
It may also be a resource hog and there are other programs that I can recommend that you use instead.

I did not see SpywareDetector in the Uninstall List that you posted. That may have been a glitch in HijackThis. Let's see if you can uninstall the program using CCleaner:

Uninstall Programs using CCleaner
Right click CCleaner and select Run as administrator.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
Scroll down to SpywareDetector, if present, and click on it once to highlight the entry
Click Run Uninstaller
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

Please let me know if SpywareDetector was in the CCleaner Uninstall List and if CCleaner was able to uninstall the program. Also, please post a fresh HijackThis log.

Apologies for the slow response. I thought I had already added this but clearly I had forgotten. I ran CCleaner - what a great program - it helped. The Spydoctor was showing up in the HiJackthis log so I did the check and fix option as I had done on previous problems like this. I ran Kaprersky but there were no problems and I decided it was best to sort out the McAfee issue now so deleted it, rebooted and installed AVG so you shoudl see that now in the log and no McAfee.

Machine is much better then when we started so please look through the log and if there is nothing obvious then I think we are done. My tools of choice now are going to be AVG Security, CCleaner and Malwarebites Anti-Malware. Do I need anything else in terms of AV and AM?

Here is the latest log in case there is some last thing I can clean out:

Nicely done Bradley!

Update Java
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Click the Download button to the right.ex.jsp
  • Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  • Check the box that says: Accept License Agreement.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Go to start > control panel > programs and features.
  • Right click on:

    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

  • Click Uninstall & then follow the prompts to remove it.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Right click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe and select Run As Administrator to install Java.
  • Reboot your computer.

Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

When the installation is complete go to programs and features and uninstall all previous versions.

This is my general post for when your logs show no signs of malware ;)- Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

Please delete DSS.exe from your computer.

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints. You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

    Protection Programs
Don't forget to re-enable any protection programs we disabled during your fix.

    General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

    • Clear Infected System Restore Points
      Turn off System Restore-Vista
      • Click the Vista/Start icon.
      • Right Click >> Computer
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Protection tab.
      • Uncheck All drives
      • Click "Turn Off System Restore" at the prompt then click "Apply".
      • Restart your computer.

      Turn ON System Restore-Vista
      • Click the Vista/Start icon
      • Right Click >> Computer
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Protection tab.
      • Checkmark All drives that were selected previously then click "Apply".

    • Set correct settings for files
      • Click Start > Computer > Organize menu (at top of page) > Folder and Search Options > View tab.
      • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
      • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
      • If necessary check Display content of system folders
      • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
      • Click OK

    • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

    • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab.

    • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.

    • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

    Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

    • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.

    • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
      Firefox
      Opera

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date.

Also please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Hi Carolyn

Thank you 100 times over. The advice has been good and timely amongst all you rother activities so i am most impressed.

I am pretty diligent on my own pc and laptop although I have learnt a few things for them as well going through this process.

I take you point about updates and I know the kids ignore the updates becasue it takes time to do but they are on a stick update this or give me their pocket money for 2 weeks everytime it needs a cleanup like this.

And I have tried firefox now and love it.

Thanks again.
