Antivirus XP 2008 - One of the many?

Unread postby Steffo » July 28th, 2008, 7:52 am

Hi,
I would be so grateful to any help with removing the evil Antivirus XP 2008 from my laptop. I have downloaded the HijackThis program but cannot open it, i just click and it won't open, i right clicked and went to open and still no luck.

I got this (virus?) after installing and uninstalling Norton Antivirus, as it made the laptop slow, i know, very silly. I have been using the laptop for about 2 years and had no problems with viruses, is there a flag or a siren that goes out to attackers the minute you uninstall an antivirus software? It seems like that anyway! I researched Antivirus XP 08 on Google and found it's quite well known, but had no luck in removing it by the manual instructions, deleting .dll files and stopping processes then deleting more files... i did try and thought i was successful, but after a while, laptop restarted and the blue screen with "Warning: Spyware Decteced..." came back up and all the pop ups and everything in full force, almost like it was laughing at fooling me. :?

Thank you so much for reading and i would greatly appreciate any help or ideas to help get rid of this nasty thing! I am using a wireless router to connect to the internet. Also am still trying to somehow open HJT so i can take a log :S

Thanks again for reading.

Hi

Rename HijackThis
There is a possibility an infection which is hiding part of the HijackThis log because it's called hijackthis.exe.
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to iseeu.com and post back a new Hijackthis log.

I have recently unticked items from the "startup", don't know if this helps, it isn't as annoying but it's still there. I installed some anti-spyware too, which found a few but not the obvious. I also tried to download AVG, but it won't let me at the moment, something is stopping it, maybe the virus?

Thank you so much for you help.

Hi

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back in your next reply.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. For Vista users, right-click DSS and select Run As Administrator
  4. If asked to install HijackThis click on Yes
  5. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  6. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply

Hello

Use this instead.

If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once Recovery Console is installed, you should see a blue screen prompt like the one below:

Image

Click Yes to allow Combofix to continue scanning for malware.

When done, a log will be produced. Please post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

In your next reply post:
ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log taken after the above scan has run

Hi,
I'm having a bit of trouble. I'm sorry for being such a pain. :pale:
I've installed combofix onto my desktop, and then the Windows recovery. When i come to drag and drop the Windows recovery icon onto the combofix it does nothing except pop up with the Open File - Security Warning to open combofix.exe, acting like i've double clicked the combofix logo... :(
I'm sorry about all the messing around i'm causing.

Hi

Something is obviously blocking them from running. Try right-clicking the Combofix icon, and select Rename
Call it Combo-fix.exe then try double-clicking it to run.

Re: Antivirus XP 2008 - One of the many?

Unread postby Scotty » July 31st, 2008, 5:21 am

Hi

First of all you have leftovers of a Norton installation. Use the removal tool from here to finish the job.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Remember to disconnect from the Internet before carrying out the next instruction, and to save the following script before you do.You must
also manually disable your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. See the link below for instructions on doing this.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.

Hi

1 - FindFile
Download FindFile by Atribune from >here<
  • Extract the contents to your Desktop
  • Double click on FileFind.exe to open the program.
  • Enter beep.sys into the File: box.
  • Click on the Search button.
  • After a while a list of file locations will appear in the List of Files: box.
  • Click on the Export button.
This will create a Notepad file named Export.txt located in the C:\ folder, copy and paste it to your next post please.
