computer freezes cubase slow

Unread postby bucketoftea » July 12th, 2008, 5:46 am

My first post - thank you for such a helpful website even if my problem cannot be solved I have learnt a lot from my visit.

Problem:
computer freezes and when I run cubase LE it sems very slow. I was running Mcafee but found I was unable to access mcafee website or indeed other some other websites and forums. My responce was to uninstall mcafee and go for AVG instead. I am still unable to access mcafee and also other seemingly unlinked websites. host file in etc folder seems untampered with. My machine sometimes requires several attempts to power up and when I return after retrieving a cup of coffee it often shows a blank screen and nil else.

I have not found any evidence of malware so far in this process but am not an expert at this. I think I might still have evidence of mcafee somewhere in the machines depths but the original problem with cubase pre-dates the mcafee episode - not sure if they are linked. I really only do music on this machine; recording mp3 files and sometimes listen on youtube.

my log file is:

Unread postby Katana » July 16th, 2008, 4:19 am

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy.
Unfortunately there are far more people needing help than there are helpers.

Please Note, your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.
Be assured, any links I give are safe

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you still require help please post a fresh HJT log

Installed Programs

Please could you give me a list of the programs that are installed.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
You will see a list with the programs installed in your computer.
Click on save list button and specify where you would like to save this file.
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into your next post.

There is no signs of any problems in your log, so let's have a couple more scans to be sure.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.
Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply

Thanks for the response - this is a bit odd - This PC has'nt frozen at all this week (although am not running anything except cubase LE) Despite fiddling with the cubase settings I cannot get the oprogramme running smoothly. The first link that you left in your last post I was unable to reach on my machine - this is the kind of difficulty I have been having. There is nothing showing there that would cause problems

Host File

Let's have a look at your Hosts file.
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Host File Manager button.
  • Click Open In Notepad

If the list is small, then Copy/Paste the contents in your reply
If it is a long list, then save the notepad file to your desktop and then attach it to your post

Hosts file - I had checked this before - and itseems fine:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Hmmm I wonder if I have to repeat all the settings and checking for cubase. - Thanks for checking I'l sit patiently and wait and see if any ideas crop up. :) - J.

Very curious ????

Please try to download MalwareBytes again, and also do a Kaspersky Scan

Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)

NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partne ... bscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Allow the ActiveX download if necessary and let the database download.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

...So I tried but could not get through to malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ie7 just hangs in there trying to connect. Kapersky's I can get to but if I try and access java.com, ie7 again fails to get through. I can't understand this - My worry is that this kind of blocking might be a feature of something nasty as yet undiagnosed. Mcafee (when I had it!) and AVG can't find anything. My children share a connection with me and like playing runescape but never on this machine ( I'm fairly sure) I don't know if anything might be affecting my ADSL router - not sure how to check this. Any idea how I can get java 1.5?? :)

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

Bleeping Computer ComboFix Tutorial

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Active Scan
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
Please go to this site Link >> ActiveScan << LINK
  • Click the Scan Now button
  • Follow the prompts to install the Active X if necessary
  • Go and make a cup of tea/coffee/beverage of your choice and watch some TV :)
  • When the scan is finished, a report will be generated
  • Next to Scan Details click the small Save button and save the report to your desktop.
  • Please post the report in your reply.

I have tried all I know to get to the combofix link without any success I watch the progress bar get about a third of the way along and it just stays there! :x then the panda security doesn't quite connect - At first I got through the page saying to install the active X if prompted after hitting the scan now button - but nothing happened then I got errors when trying to connect again:

An error occurred while processing your request.
Reference #97.9bec0f50.1216842870.19d4d6d2

An error occurred while processing your request.
Reference #97.e1ec0f50.1216842924.505cc73

and then the third time.....

An error occurred while processing your request.
Reference #97.e1ec0f50.1216843149.50a76c0

I don't seem to be able to follow all of the links ----is it me or my machine?? - I have given up with me - I hope you haven't(!) - Why would I be able to reach some websites but not all - is there any process that blocks access without involving the host file?? A lot of the forum websites all seem to be blocked such as bleeping computer, techspot

Do the error codes give any clue?? I'll keep trying in the meantime and if I can get through I'll post as instructed :)
- J.

Managed a bit of jiggery-pokery and obtained combofix, ran - report log obtained:

Re: computer freezes cubase slow

Can the other machines that use your connection connect to Bleeping Computer ?
If not, then please ignore the following and post back.

If they can then it is only your machine that is affected, so please do the following

Download and Run SD Fix

Please download SDFix( by andymanchesta ) and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F5 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Download and Run ComboFix
Please delete the copy of ComboFix that you have and download an updated copy from the link below

    ComboFix.exe

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please note, these are temporary links for this user only.
They will be removed in 48 hours

Sorry - was able to download and run in safe mode but the install crashed:

CRC failed in SDFix\apps\swmxeg.e
I tried to download from andymanchester but guess what ?- can't reach that website. I have tried some of the other machines in the network and they all seem to reach websites this one can't. You know sometimes you can't see for looking and I wonder if thats whats happenening here - I just can't work it out ;( - I'll keep trying for SDfix and if I succeed 'll post again or edit this post. - thanks for being so patient with me :) -J.

Please try the following, and then see if you can access the main download sites

In the windows control panel. If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category otherwise double click on Network Connections. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks.
That option might not be avaiable on some systems
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

OK! - did the flush dns thing - and I think has worked  . (love to know why but don't worry) I still cant run the SDFix thingy as the program refuses to install beyond SDFix\apps\SWreg.exe. ( I think I got the name of this wrong in the earlier post). Computer is running a bit faster but I am not sure why. I do use a hard wired router to connect to the net and I connect this to a hub in the house. I have a second hub connecting this machine to the first hub and several computers share the second hub. There is quite a lot of distance involved (>30 m) as I manage the network over 2 buildings - one is kitted out as music studio.
Maybe I should have explained this before. I have tried running cubase and I think it is better but still some glitches in playing rather than recording which do not seem to settle by adjusting the buffer sizes. Hmm - The combo fix scan is here :
