Hello, I am turtledove,
Welcome to the forum

I will be glad to help you with your computer problems.
HijackThis and other logs take awhile to research. Please be patient with me. I know that you want your problems solved quickly, and I will work hard to help you.

As an Undergraduate, my posts will be checked first by A Teacher or Expert. Please be patient, I'll post a fix soon.
***Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference and an easy way to find for answering.
Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Please stay at one forum for help.
3. Please continue reading posts until I give the All Clear. It is important to note this, as a clean looking HijackThis is not always a sign your system is clean.
4. Always Copy/Print out ALL Instructions.

If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
*Please do not run any fixes on your own, as they may interfere with our work.
*If you are going to be busy and *unable to post for more than 5 days* please post in this thread so we know and do not close this thread.

*Please Note: If you do not respond with a note that you need more time and you have not responded in 5 days, the thread will be closed as inactive.*

I am currently researching your log and will reply as soon as possible.
Thanks for your patience!

Please make an Uninstall list :
To access the Uninstall Manager, please do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Hello wba2901,

I see you are running McAfee as well as Avast. These will cause conflict and slowdowns of your PC. It is not good to run two Anti Virus programs, this may also interfere with detecting bad programs.
**Please uninstall one, if McAfee is up to date, includes firewall, and paid, then please Uninstall the Avast.

Next:
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Please Post (May need 2 posts)
Please do the Uninstall list from above post (if not done yet) and post it
Report.txt
A New HijackThis log and how your PC is running details

Thank you

Re: Newcomer to malware problems help.

Unread postby turtledove » July 19th, 2008, 4:42 pm

Hello wba2901, thank you for the logs.

Since McAfee seems to not work for you, do the following. It shows in HikackThis log that it is running.
Remove Macafee

Note: You should first attempt to remove your McAfee consumer products using Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel. This is the best method. After uninstalling using Windows *Add/Remove Programs, run the McAfee Consumer Removal Tool (MCPR.EXE) to ensure successful removal of all McAfee references.

Download the removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/lic ... s/MCPR.exe
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on your computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.EXE to run the removal tool.
  • Restart your computer after receiving the message Clean Up Successful.

Update Java

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a log file has been produced. Click OK.
  • A log file will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.

  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Peer2Peer
You are running P2P file sharing programs.
BearShare
uTorrent
  • Many of these programs come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P file sharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

My recommendation is you uninstall them.
References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/com ... ction.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

**Please do not use these if you decide to keep them until we have cleaned your computer.**

**Please Copy these instructions to Notepad or Print as you will be off the internet**
Download CombiFix

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this web page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

*Disable AVAST
Right click on the avast! icon in system tray (looks like a letter "a" on a billiard ball), and choose Stop On-Access Protection
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Remove a line in HijackThis
Note: Items in the "Trusted Zone are an avenue for bad programs. If necessary, only Microsoft should be allowed there.
Please close all windows/browsers. Rerun HijackThis. Place a check mark in the following:
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.mcafee.com
Click Fix Checked, then Exit when it is done.
Reboot computer.
Rerun HijackThis and save new log.

Ensure you have all protections turned on before connecting again.

Please Post:
1. ComboFix.txt
2. New HijackThis log and any problems

Thank You

Unread postby turtledove » July 21st, 2008, 12:09 pm

Hello wba2901,

Thank you for the logs, nicely done. :)
Your logs look clean now. We will do some cleanup, and then some recommendations for the future.

UNINSTALL COMBOFIX

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Also update Adobe Flash Player and Shockwave if not updated yet.
Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

The following is information to help minimize problems in the future.
***Please Copy/Print for reference when you need new Anti Virus/Firewall/Anti spyware.

**Please post back that you've read this and are clear to close this topic; or if there are any remaining issues.**

Before Surfing Be Sure that XP IS fully up to date

Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program. If you want to help the developer of the program and get more information about what the programs that you see in Winpatrol please check out Winpatrol Plus. It does not need a new download.

Check for updates at least WEEKLY
Antivirus: *Use only one*
AntiVir
AVAST! Anti-Virus

Needed Firewall: Monitors traffic IN and OUT Bound. Very Important. *Use only one*

**Keep IE Secure:
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
