Unknown applications attempting internet access

Unread postby dacob46 » October 23rd, 2005, 10:45 am

Zone alarm keeps flaging up the following which are attempting to get access to internet.
I keep denying permission but am concerned that they may be trojans. Have had problems in
recent weeks with system 'freezing', illegal transaction notices and shortage of memory
notices. I would be most obliged if you could assist in any way.

C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\The win cool\cbhaigbf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\fe4fab4b.exe
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\fe705986.exe
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\fee79e63.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\The win cool\norznfjo.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\The win cool\xghyieko.exe

Thanks

Hello dacob46 and welcome to the forums.

We have a few small things to fix, but I suspect a LOP infection too. I need some additional info before we start to fix your PC.

Before we start to fix your computer, I would like you to move HijackThis to it's own folder. Do not attempt to fix anything before you moved HijackThis.
Create a folder for Hijackthis on the C: drive called C:\HJT. You can do this by going to My Computer then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Locate HijackThis.exe in the C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\PKD1A3.TMP folder and right click on it, select cut, right click in the folder you just did create and select paste.
______________________________

Run HijackThis, click on Open the Misc Tools Section, click on Open Uninstall Manager. Click on Save List and save uninstall_list.txt to your Desktop. Open this file in Notepad and copy/past the content in your reply.
Click back (the one located at the right side of the save list button)
Click Back and Click on Scan. When the scan is finished, click Save Log and paste the content in your reply.
______________________________

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document.

@ECHO OFF
cd C:\
cd C:\Windows\Tasks
attrib -r -s -h *.job
dir *.job > c:\myfiles.txt

Save it to your desktop as findjob.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: findjob.bat

If your OS doesn't have the File Type Option, save it as a text file but put the name between double quotes like this "findjob.bat"

Locate findjob on your Desktop. If you see that the filename is findjob.bat.txt change it to findjob.bat
Double click findjob.bat. Locate the file myfiles.txt in the C:\ folder, open it with Notepad and copy/paste the content in your reply.
______________________________

Please post the uninstall_list.txt, the myfiles.txt located in C:\ and a new Hijackthis log.

Please perform the following in addition to the instructions above. It will give me more info about the scheduled tasks.
______________________________

Download and unzip to one folder: (create a folder for all the files - example : C:\lop and extract the files from the archive into that folder)
http://metallica.geekstogo.com/findlop.zip

Inside the folder locate findlop.bat

Doubleclick it and it will create the file C:\findlop.txt
Find that file and copy the content into your next post.
______________________________

Your reply will thus contain : (note you may need several replies to post all that information, otherwise it might get cut off)

1. uninstall_list.txt
2. C:\myfiles.txt
3. C:\findlop.txt
4. Hijackthis log.

Thanks.

Hi Kim,
Thanks for help. Hope I have copied everything properly.
I have found that double clicking findlop.bat produces 'bad command or filename' so have
not included its textfile.

If Spybot - S&D 1.4 is already installed on your system, skip to Update Spybot - S&D before using it. Otherwise download Spybot - S&D from the following link:
Spybot - Search and Destroy

When you have downloaded the program, double click on the downloaded file to start the installation. Follow the default selections, pressing the Next button until you get to the Select Additional Tasks screen.

Under Permanent protection, make sure to uncheck the following items for now:
  • Use Internet Explorer Protection
  • Use system settings Protection (TeaTimer)
Press the Next button and then the Install button to start the installation process. When the installation process is complete, make sure that Run Teatimer is unchecked.

Launch Spybot - S&D

If you told Spybot to launch when it was done installing, the program should now be open. Otherwise find the icon on your desktop and double-click on it. When you use Spybot - S&D for the first time, it will prompt you for certain tasks to complete. Skip all tasks for now by pressing the Next button. Click on the button labeled Start using this program to begin using Spybot - Search & Destroy.

Update Spybot - S&D before using it

Click on the Search for Updates button. If there are available updates, they will be listed. Click on the Download Updates button and Spybot - S&D will download the updates and install them.
______________________________

Make sure that you can see hidden files.
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
  3. Select the View Tab.
  4. In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
  5. Click OK.
______________________________

Disable Spyware Doctor
  1. Click the Spyware Doctor icon in the System Tray.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Click Startup Settings under Pick a Category.
  4. Uncheck Run at Windows startup.
  5. Click Apply and Exit Spyware Doctor.

XoftSpy
Although the program isn't actually considered as spyware anymore, I still wouldn't recommend to install a progam from a company that was listed as rogue spyware. More information can be found here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_ant ... m#xos_note

If you decide to remove the program, do the following:

Goto your Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programs
Look through the installed programs for the following item and remove it if present:

XoftSpy

During the uninstall process, you might be presented with several prompts to guide you through uninstalling the product. Read these carefully to make sure you are actually choosing to uninstall rather than keep the software.

Copy/paste the following text into a new Notepad document, make sure that word wrap is turned of.

@ECHO OFF
cd C:\
cd C:\Windows\Tasks
attrib -r -s -h 00E538~1.JOB
del 00E538~1.JOB
attrib -r -s -h 2AAD74~1.JOB
del 2AAD74~1.JOB
attrib -r -s -h 6232D0~1.JOB
del 6232D0~1.JOB
attrib -r -s -h 320E73~1.JOB
del 320E73~1.JOB

Save it to your desktop as klj.bat. Save it as:
File Type: All Files (not as a text document or it wont work).
Name: klj.bat

If your OS doesn't have the File Type Option, save it as a text file but put the name between double quotes like this "klj.bat"

Locate klj.bat on your Desktop. If you see that the filename is klj.bat.txt change it to klj.bat
Double click klj.bat. A DOS box should open and close quickly, this is normal.

  • Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
  • On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
  • In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.

Run Ad-Aware and Click on the Scan Now Button
  • Choose Perform Full System Scan
  • DESELECT Search for negligible risk entries, as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat. (make it show a red X)
Click Next to begin the scan. When the scan is completed, the Performing System Scan screen will change name to Scan Complete.

Click the Next Button to get to the Scanning Results Window where more information about the objects detected during the scan is available. Click the Critical Objects Tab. In general all of the items listed will be bad. To fix all the bad critical objects, right click on one of them, click the Select All entry in the pop-up menu to mark all entries. Click Next and then OK in the dialog box to confirm the removal.

Reboot to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
______________________________

Run Spybot - S&D

Click the button Check for Problems
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
Make sure that there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

If it has trouble removing any spyware, you will get a message window, asking if it would be ok to run Spybot - S&D on the next reboot before any other applications start running. You should reply Yes to this. The next time you start Windows, Spybot will run automatically and fix any of the programs it could not fix previously.

At this point you will be presented with the list of found entries again, but now there will be large green checkmarks next to the items that Spybot - S&D was able to remove. The ones that are still checked but do not have the large green checkmark next to them will be fixed on the next reboot of windows.

From Normal Mode, run an online antivirus scan at Trend Micro. Make sure to check the autoclean boxes and try to save to results of the scan.

Reboot your computer and let's check the Scheduled Tasks again.

Double click findjob.bat if you still have it on your desktop. Locate the file myfiles.txt in the C:\ folder, open it with Notepad and copy/paste the content in your reply.
______________________________

Scan again with HijackThis once more and post your log along with the myfiles.txt and the results of the Trend Scan please.

1. Hijackthis log
2. C:\myfiles.txt
3. Results of Trend if possible

Hello dacob46,

findjob.bat is not opening.

That's normal, it's not a program, it's a batch file that writes the content of your scheduled tasks folder into myfiles.txt. A DOS box opens and closes very quickly, that's all. No worries it worked very well. :)

Congratulations, your log is clean. Do you still get warnings from Zone Alarm ? Keep an eye on the PC in the next days, LOP is a very tricky infection.

Hide your system files again.
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
  3. Select the View Tab.
  4. In the Hidden files section uncheck Show all files.
  5. Click OK.
______________________________

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office Updates

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site frequently. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any application of it, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
  1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  2. Click on the Security tab
  3. Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  4. Click on Default Level and click Ok
  5. Click on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  6. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Additional information is available in the following KB article:
Resources for using Internet Explorer 6

Download and install the following free programs
  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    You can download SpywareBlaster here
A tutorial can be found here
  • SpywareGuard
It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method. An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware. And you can easily have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard. It also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection.
    You can download SpywareGuard here
A tutorial can be found here
  • IE-SPYAD
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all. It basically prevents any downloads, cookies, scripts from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    You can download IE-SPYAD here
A tutorial can be found here
  • Hosts File
A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
A tutorial tutorial can be found here
    • MVPS Hosts File
You can download the MVPS Hosts File here
Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.
Install Spyware Detection and Removal Programs
  • Ad-Aware
It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks.
    You can download Ad-Aware here
A tutorial can be found here
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy
It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
You can download Spybot - S&D here
A tutorial can be found here
Before adding any other Spyware Detection and Removal programs always check the Rogue Anti-Spyware List for programs known to be misleading, mistaken, or just outright "Foistware".
You will find the list here

Use an AntiVirus Software

It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See the link below for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs.

Update your Anti Virus Software

It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall

I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below.

A tutorial on Understanding and Using Firewalls can be found here

Happy surf, and let me know if your PC behaves better now.
