Hi heat123,

I can't see any malware in your HijackThis log, that doesn't guarantee your machine is clean, but it's a good sign.

What file were you concerned about?
Do you have any other reason to suspect malware infection, such as alerts from your security software?

Hi the other night I used process scanner to scan my running processes and it found wininit.exe as a security risk. A lot of other sites did to when I googled it. Also I did a online scan about a week and a half ago and it found adware and some tracking cookies. It said it removed it but there still could be some hidden pieces. Can we continue and dig deeper please. Thanks for your help.

Hi heat123,

If wininit.exe was running from the C:\Windows\System32 folder then it is a legitimate Windows file and not anything to be concerned about. We can check for all copies of this file as follows:

Next, highlight and copy (Ctrl-C) the following command (it's one long command), press Start then paste (Ctrl-V) it into the search box and press Enter to execute it:
cmd /c dir "c:\wininit.exe" /a /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt" 2>>&1
A black box will open and a file will appear on your Desktop called look.txt.
Please wait until the black box closes before opening look.txt
Post the contents of look.txt in your next response.

Next, please do a couple of malware scans:

Scan with ESET online scanner:
  • Open Internet Explorer by right-clicking the IE icon (on the Start menu or quick launch) and selecting Run as administrator
  • NOTE: Internet Explorer will temporarily have administrator privileges, this is required for the scan but dangerous for normal surfing so do NOT open any other websites in IE until after the scan has finished and this window has been closed.
  • Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start, copy/paste the following command into the search box and press Enter:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.
  • Please be sure to close this Internet Explorer window before continuing.

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Once complete, please post the look.txt output, the Eset scan report and a new HijackThis log.

Re: posssible backdoor trojan/ worm

Unread postby silver » July 14th, 2008, 8:59 pm

Hi heat123,

The only copies of wininit.exe present are in legitimate locations so it doesn't appear to be a threat. To double-check, we can analyse the copy of wininit.exe that is present by doing the following:

Please upload a file for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wininit.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

Note: If Jotti is busy, you can use VirusTotal instead.

Please post the results along with a new HijackThis log. When starting HijackThis, please right-click the HijackThis program file or shortcut and select Run as administrator.

Re: posssible backdoor trojan/ worm

Unread postby silver » July 15th, 2008, 7:46 pm

Hi heat123,

As you can see, wininit.exe appears to be legitimate and all the scans are clean of malware - so I think your machine is fine. If you have further symptoms or concerns please let me know.

Please now delete fsbl.exe from your Desktop.
Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.

Hi heat123,

As far as HijackThis goes, it can be removed for now which can be done by opening Start->Control Panel->Programs and Features and Uninstalling HijackThis. You can then remove this folder:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

There are no suspicious changes in your HijackThis log, and I don't think the problems you are describing are malware-related.

For further assistance with these issues I think the best and fastest solution for you is to post on a general troubleshooting forum like the Microsoft Windows forum forum at WhatTheTech. The experts there specialize in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

My suggestion would be to remove all unnecessary software, especially that which runs automatically (apart from security software).

There are other steps you could take, but I am not an expert on optimizing Vista. The forum I linked to does however have people who specialize in this type of thing so they will be able to help you with it better than I can. :)
