System Error "Trojan Horse Detected in System"

Unread postby cheapskate » June 30th, 2008, 7:44 am

Every time I open a folder this message comes up and it gives me an option to download a antivirus. I click "no" and it opens a browser and this is the link http://free-viruscan.com/id/4912933/4/1/. Did a scan with spybot and avg, and nothing was found. already did a hijack scan and log has been created.

Don't really want to format the drive. Thanks for the help.

Unread postby silver » July 3rd, 2008, 12:21 am

Hi cheapskate,

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
dir "%userprofile%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\AutorunsDisabled" /a /s >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\AutorunsDisabled" /a /s >> results.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save):
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results.txt output, the SmitfraudFix report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

Re: System Error "Trojan Horse Detected in System"

Unread postby silver » July 3rd, 2008, 9:26 pm

Hi cheapskate,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
BearShare
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
Bearshare contains adware and the Java installation is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6) from here

You have µTorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I strongly recommend you remove µTorrent via Add/Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer

Hi cheapskate,

That looks good, how is your machine running now?

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

Once complete, please post the Eset report and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your machine is running now.
