Hello, I have Xp Sp2, updates should be current. This is my laptop and it gets connected to several networks through out the week. Today I updated and ran Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware for the first time in a few months. S&D did not turn up anything but Ad-Aware turned up a Dropper.Delf and that concerns me a little. I put that in quarantine for safe keeping. Then ran a full scan with eest and it came up clean. I don't seem to be having any issues so I'm not overly concerned just a little since I have not run an Ad-Aware scan in months I don't know how long it has been there. I've looked at my HJT a few times and there are things that I don't notice from previous logs in there, just wondering if someone could look it over and let me know if I am clean or not, thank you.

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Carolyn and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

I am currently looking at your log now and will be back as soon as possible with your instructions.
while you are waiting one other thing that can be of good use is an uninstall list so please do the following

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply.

Hello Carolyn,
My name is Mike, Thank you for looking at my logs. Since my first post IE has been randomly locking up, not sure if that has anything to do with this but I never really had any lockups before. It has happened about 3 times in the last 2 days. Other than that I can't say that I notice anything. Following I have posted the uninstall list and a new HJT just incase anything changed in the last few days.

Hello Mike,

Please post the Ad-Aware log file for my review.
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR_USER_NAME]\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Logs

From there you can choose which log file to open, depending on the date of the scan. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Upload a file for scanning
I'd like you to check a file for malware.
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\PMLY.exe

  • Copy/Paste the file into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.
  • Repeat for all files on the list.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  1. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  2. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  3. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  4. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  5. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  6. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  7. Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
  8. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Please post the following:
  • The Ad-Aware log
  • The VirusTotal/Jotti results
  • The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
  • The contents of main.txt
  • The contents of extra.txt.

Carolyn,

The
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\PMLY.exe
entry bothered me too but when I googled it the only thing that came up is my previous HJT scans and no one else seemed worried about it. Does it matter in these scans if I have hidden folders? I went to C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Tempv but the PMLY.exe did not show up there.

I went to do the first step but when I went here
C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR_USER_NAME]\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Logs
all that was there were old logs from 2007. I switched from Ad-aware 2007 to Ad-Aware 2008 before perfoming the scan but I do not see any logs for it. So I opened Ad-aware 2008, went to status then log files and came up with this.

20080713 14-27-49 : Started cleaning the system of infections
20080713 14-27-49 : Clean operation finished
20080714 19-32-14 : Scan terminated by user.
20080714 19-32-26 : Scan terminated by user.
20080714 19-33-28 : Startup scan disabled.

HMMMM thats odd because I didn't terminate the scan. Actually I got all the way through it thats what led me here. Anyhow that is the only recent log I can find.

Now the virustotal scan

0 bytes size received / Se ha recibido un archivo vacio

and jotti

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file

-- End of Deckard's System Scanner: finished at 2008-07-16 13:05:57 ------------

I reran the DSS just to make sure and there was no extra text. Then I went to the Deckard folder and the only extra text file was one from a previous scan in March. I hope I got everything you needed.

Hi Mike,

I would like to know the details of the file, or files, that were quarantined by Ad-Aware (path, file name, file size if available). Can you go to the quarantine folder and retrieve that information for me? If so, please include it in your next reply.

Here is how you can force DSS to produce extra.txt:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • A configuration box will appear, click the Check All button, then un-check Main Log and press Scan!

Please post extra.txt and any information regarding files that were quarantined by Ad-Aware.

Hello Carolyn,
I think the Trojan gods are angry with me. :( IE keeps locking up on me, Fass locked up during a long post for you, and strangly enough right after I posted that question about hidden files they all unhid on me.

The only quarrantine logs I can find are for 2007. The only things in the 2008 file are the XSL stylesheet, the event log already provided, the update log, and an XML log of the previous scan. I'm going to provide the XML but I don't see what your looking for in it. I opened Ad-Aware 2008 and looked at the quarrantine but it doesn't show any detail whatsoever.

Please let me know if you can find another way at that quarrantine file.

Mike

EDIT:The help file for 2008 says
Quarantine

Quarantine is used to isolate and backup objects detected during an Ad-Aware 2008 scan. You then have the option to restore them at a later time. Objects that are quarantined will be encrypted and compressed, and can only be read and restored using the Ad-Aware 2008 Quarantine manager

Hi Mike,

First, please run CCleaner, which I see you already have installed on your computer:
Run CCleaner
CCleaner will remove everything from the temp/temporary folders but please note that it will not make back ups!
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    • In the Windows Tab:
      • Clean all entries in the Internet Explorer section except Cookies
      • Clean all the entries in the Windows Explorer section
      • Clean all entries in the System section
      • Clean all entries in the Advanced section
      • Clean any others that you choose
    • In the Applications Tab:
      • Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it
      • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it
      • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section
      • Clean any others that you choose
  • Click the Run Cleaner button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click OK and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click exit when done.
  • If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO
CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

Since IE keeps locking up on you, let's try another browser:
Download and Install Firefox from HERE.

Next, please do an online scan:
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Please post the Kaspersky log and a fresh HijackThis log along with a description of how your computer is behaving.

One more question, did you recently reinstall Windows, or is this a new computer? Your Deckard's log is rather short.

Hi Carolyn,
No this box is about 3 years old and I have never done a reinstall, I've been thinking latley that I should but I am having problems with my cd/dvd writer and can't complete backups. I'll run the scans but I'm out of work in an hour so if the Kapersky takes longer than that it will be a few hours till I repost.

Hi Carolyn,

I was wondering if you can tell me what site you were visiting when that message popped up.

I was visiting this site, this very page to be exact.

Oh, and thank you for removing "http" from your post.

Your welcome I went to research it a little and went to copy and paste, noticed the link light up and thought that might not be good if someone clicked on it. After a google search the first page to come up was identified by google as dangerous so I'm glad I did that.

Back to the previous instructions. The only odd behavior I see is what has already been mentioned, IE lockups, Fass locked up (and didn't save any part of a long post), and my hidden files are now visible without me changing the setting. Other than that I can't say that I notice anything, oh and the previously mentioned EEST warning message.

I don't want to get too far off track but I chose Nod32 based on recomendations here in the library (thank you Chris), but I went with the EEST and was wondering if the firewall built in is good enough or if I should get one of the other recommended firewalls.

Sorry back to the logs.

Good morning Carolyn,
Can you take a look at this? We might be chasing a false positive but what I am reading is a little over my head. http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.ph ... 78&hl=delf

Mike

Edit: Oh man there is a link in there to the false positive board and almost every thread is dropper.delf.

Hi Mike,

Have you every considered training at Malware Removal University? You are a natural. :)

Yes, I have been wondering if Ad-Aware gave a false positive. That is why I have been wanting to see what is in quarantine. ;)

Let's give it another try please.
  • Open the Ad-Aware 2008 Control Panel.
  • From the drop-down Scan menu, click "Quarantine & Ignore" to open the Quarantine manager and Ignore List.
  • If not already selected, click on the Quarantine tab to see the list of Quarantined objects.

The Quarantine manager lists objects by:
Family: • Shows the family associated with the detected objects.
Category: • Shows the category that Lavasoft has classified that threat to be in.
Description: • Shows a description of the object's location.
TAI: • Shows the Threat Analysis Index (TAI) of the detected object.
Time:• Shows the date and time you quarantined the object.

I do not have Ad-Aware installed on any of my computers, so I am not sure what the easiest way might be for you to copy that info. I would try right-clicking in the Quarantine window on the chance that you will have the option to save the info to a text file.

Let's also run one more scan please:
  • Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) from here
  • Save into C:\ with a name of fsbl.exe
  • Go to Start > Run
  • Copy and paste the contents of the below codebox into the run box
    Code: Select all
    C:\fsbl.exe /expert

  • Click OK
  • This will launch BlackLight
  • Select I accept the agreement
  • Click Next
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on Next>
  • Click Exit
  • A logfile will have been created in the C:\ drive
  • It will be named fsbl-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the date and time of the scan
  • Use notepad to open that log
  • Post the contents of that log as a reply to this topic, along with a new HijackThis log and the Ad-Aware Quarantine info.

Carolyn,
Have you every considered training at Malware Removal University? You are a natural.

Thank you for that. Yes I did enroll and learned alot, but I came to grips with the fact I'm good at research but I don't really know much about what goes on behind the scenes of a computer. There is a pretty big knowledge gap for me between "1010 makes the circuit turn on and off" and what is actually going on in there evidenced by the fact I went messeng around with the registry in CCleaner and now I have a couple of programs I can not access or delete. A little bit of knowledge is dangerous so I'll just be content to be a danger to myself alone.

Ok I tried to right click, no dice. I took a screen shot if you want that. I went to the bar that has Family, Category, Description, TAI and Time. Under description originally all you could see was "File: C:\S, but if you go to that bar and mouse over the dividers you can expand them like a spreadsheet, who knew. Any way I will try to just write what is there in as close to form as I can get, the bullet points represent drop down boxes. If you want the screen shots let me know.

This looks nothing like I wrote it. You will have to line up the categories to read it.
