Dan,
I think Kaspersky Online Scan has been updated since that speech was written, just a heads up it doesn't look that way anymore. The box marked
  • Viruses,Worms. Trojan Horses, Rootkits

was uncheckable. The other three boxes
  • spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  • Archives
  • Mail Databases
were all checked.
That log follows along with the CCleaner installed programs list and a new HJT just incase you want it.

Hi, Mike, from your uninstall list I can see at some point you had Norton! as you have CAISafe I will give you a removal tool to clear the leftovers up.

Remove Norton

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Go to your antivirus program yahoo and you can delete items that it has quarantined.

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
C:\Program Files\TalkingBuddy

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Let me see the otmoveit report.

Dan,
There used to be a link on that Symantec page to help identify your version, I don't see that anymore. I'm not sure which version I have. I did a Symantec search on this computer and the only files with text are live update files. I'm not sure how to ID which version is here.

edit: I found the identify which version you have page but that relies on being able to open the product and I don't see any files for doing that. All that is here is leftovers from an incomplete uninstall.

LiveReg (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate 1.7 (Symantec Corporation)?

Dan,
I used add/remove and both livereg and live update no longer show on ccleaner uninstall log. Searching Symantec shows that some files still exist.

IE blank page gone, now MSN search page.

OTMoveIt2 report following.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\SmitfraudFix moved successfully.
C:\Program Files\TalkingBuddy moved successfully.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.3 log created on 07122008_171042

Dan,
No worries about the wait, everyone needs a weekend. It seems as if all the popups and redirects are gone. This computer is still super slow there are alot of things I think we can get rid of or atleast keep from starting automatically. Once we get the all clean I am going to buy her NOD32, it has been pretty good for me. Also set her up with Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, do you have any other suggestions? One other question I have is what is this?

One other question I have is what is this?
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - https://www.n-styleid.com/merchant.mvc? ... 991b1ce4&#

This section corresponds to Windows Active Desktop Components.

Active Desktop Components are local or remote html files that are embedded directly onto your desktop as a background.
________

Optional

You can fix these with HJT as they don't need to start at startup they can be started manually.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE NvQTwk,NvCplDaemon initialize
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LXSUPMON] C:\WINDOWS\system32\LXSUPMON.EXE RUN

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
O4 - Global Startup: Google Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Google\Google Updater\GoogleUpdater.exe
O4 - Global Startup: KODAK Software Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\Kodak Software Updater.exe
O4 - Global Startup: ymetray.lnk = C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Yahoo! Music Engine\ymetray.exe

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Some usefull reading here for you

let me have another HJT log when done and let me know how things are!

Hello Dan,
Thank you for the reading material. Wow what a difference fixing those lines made, this box runs much closer to what I would expect from it. I think I only have one last question.
This section corresponds to Windows Active Desktop Components.

Active Desktop Components are local or remote html files that are embedded directly onto your desktop as a background.

I went to this website and there is not nor should there be anything like this on the desktop. Can I fix that line in HJT or should I go to the desktop settings and delete it there? Other than answering that last question I think you can mark me down as fixed.

Thank you Dan very much for your timely and selfless help, I would be forever lost without this board. Could you put a donation link on the last post, it was sure worth a donation.

Can I fix that line in HJT or should I go to the desktop settings and delete it there? Yes, fix with HJT

Well done for staying with me.

Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Create a new System Restore Point
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.
