IE problems, unknown processes...

Unread postby clr66 » July 3rd, 2008, 10:31 am

Hi, everyone. It looks as though I picked up some pretty nasty spyware along the way...
Mostly the same notorious problems with tons of popups launching when I use Internet Explorer,
and everything running a little sluggish in general, and a few other minor odd things...

I've run Norton AntiVirus, SpyBot S&D, Lavasoft Adaware, PC Tools Spyware Doctor, and SUPERAntiSpyware...
Nothing detected much more than cookies, except for Spyware Doctor, which detected some Trojan and
something called the likes of RogueAntiSpyware.SpywareNo (I can't remember the name of the other one detected...)

Despite the successful deletion of those by Spyware Doctor, problems persisted. I downloaded
Security Task Manager and noticed some odd looking processes running in C:\Users\Collin\Appdata\Local\Temp.
I used Security Task Manager's Quarantine tool on three processes:
cncddmb.dll
urqOEuRh.dll
efcYRlby.dll
After restarting, I noticed the popup ads stopped for a while, although I would get 3 different Run Dll Error messages saying it couldn't those three files mentioned above, so apparently something is still trying to get to them...
However, I then began getting warning messages from SpyBot S&D saying that changes were being attempted to the Startup Registry by those three files, as well Rundll32.exe, and some suspicious looking file called khfGxXRk.dll.
I'm also noticing a large number C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe processes running as well as C:\Windows\System32 taskeng.exe, I'm not sure if these are malignant or not. There's also a strange process called winnjx32.rom that keeps popping up that I'm suspicious of.

Anyway, I've been considering checking all the boxes in HijackThis related to the files I mentioned above, but I would appreciate an expert opinion on what looks malicious, as I'm sure there's more going on than I can recognize...

Thanks for the help!

Hi clr66

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.

Thanks for the assistance, Shaba.

I've posted all requested logs below.
One point of concern: You'll notice that final entry in the Malwarebytes' log file was scheduled for deletion upon restart. After restarting my computer, I received a notice that Windows had blocked the startup of a program. A Windows program then opened with a list of the programs it runs on startup. Two of the items on the list were files detected by the Malwarebytes program, so I unchecked those entries from the startup list. I then told Windows to go ahead and allow Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to run. However, no windows or messages from Malwarebytes came up, so I'm not sure if it was able to carry through with its intention to delete the winnjx32.rom file as stated in the log, or if maybe Windows interferred with it. I looked in the C:\Users\Collin\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Windows\System32\ folder for the winnjx32.rom file, but didn't see it, so I'm assuming Malwarebytes was successful. However, I may run a full scan again later today to see if it detects anything again...

Re: IE problems, unknown processes...

Unread postby Shaba » July 6th, 2008, 11:05 am

Hi

Uninstall these:

Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3

Go to Start > Run
Type regedit and click OK.

  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to "File > Export"
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
    • Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
    • Under "Filename" put backup
  • Choose to save it to C:\ or in somewhere else safe location so that you will remember where you put it (don't put it on the Desktop!)
  • Click Save and then go to File > Exit.

Open Notepad and copy the contents of the following box to a new file.

Code: Select all
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\681930a3]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\MSSMSGS]

Save it as fix.reg (save type: "All files" (*.*)) to your desktop.

It should look like this -> Image

Go to Desktop, double-click fix.reg and merge the infomation with the registry.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

  • Click Start and then Run to bring up the Run box.
  • Copy and paste the contents of this quote box into the run box:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK to the prompt from Deckard's System Scanner.
  • Click Scan.
  • Place a tick next to the following entries (if they are present).
    .reg
    .scr
  • Click Fix

Reboot.

Re-run dss.

Post a fresh dss log.

Re: IE problems, unknown processes...

Unread postby clr66 » July 7th, 2008, 5:53 pm

Below is the new main.txt log from dss... It didn't bring up an extra.txt file this time, so maybe I ran it incorrectly this time?...

Also, two things which may or may not be noteworthy:

- After following the instructions and rebooting, I received a notice from Spybot S&D stating that a change was being made to REG file extension association and was altering something to do with regedit.exe involving an ominous "%1" named something or other... I think when i ran dss.exe with the /daft option, it brought up a reg entry involving %1 which i told it to fix, so I'm not sure if that message from Spybot was an acknowledgement of dss doing its job, or an alert that the malware was up to more tricks... Sorry I can't be more clear about that...

- Everytime I start up, I receive two RunDLL error messages stating:

"Error loading winnjx32.rom
The specified module could not be found."

and

"Error loading C:\Users\Collin\Appdata\Local\Temp\cncddrnb.dll
The specified module could not be found."

Any way to get these to stop showing up?

Thanks for the help! ;)

Re: IE problems, unknown processes...

Unread postby Shaba » July 8th, 2008, 1:57 am

Hi

No you didn't, dss doesn't produce extra.txt upon second run :)

"- Everytime I start up, I receive two RunDLL error messages stating:

"Error loading winnjx32.rom
The specified module could not be found."

and

"Error loading C:\Users\Collin\Appdata\Local\Temp\cncddrnb.dll
The specified module could not be found."

Any way to get these to stop showing up?"

Yes, we need to disable TeaTimer first, see here

After that:

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark these:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSSMSGS] rundll32.exe winnjx32.rom,LNiRun
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [681930a3] rundll32.exe "C:\Users\Collin\AppData\Local\Temp\cncddrnb.dll",b

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log.

Here's the latest HijackThis log...

Everything seems back to normal as far as I can tell.... Any other recommended actions?

Thanks again for the help...

Hi

Let's run one scan before judging that you're clean :)

Right-click your favourite browser and choose Run as administrator.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi

Then you're clean!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it saysThe Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications..
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Happy surfing and stay clean! :)
