I'm still learning, and leaning on those so much smarter than I

Tell me how your computer is running now, flickering of the desktop? Any redirect of your browser? Any lagtime when opening web pages? Any problems at all?

Any problems that weren't taken care of by your AVG? The trojan found, where was it, did AVG clean it up?

Barring any bad news from AVG, we've just a couple of things left to do :)

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.

  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.

Next is to Give you a shiny clean Restore Point.
Right-click on My Computer, choose Properties and click on the System Restore tab.
Put a check/tick in the Box next to Turn OFF System Restore on all tabs.
Click Apply and click OK
Reboot normally.

Again, right-click on My Computer, choose Properties and click on the System Restore tab
This time, uncheck the box, click Apply and click OK
Reboot.

Open HJT, scan and save the log. Paste the log here with the info about your AVG scan. If your computer appears to be clean we'll finish up :)

Hi again, lhamp

Decision time for you, again

You are running both Kerio and ZoneAlarm firewalls. It really is not a good idea to have more than one installed.
Info from my Guru:
It's not just that it's not a good idea, it's downright dangerous to his computer, may leave his sytem unprotected as two different firewalls battle for resources, and could cause serious problems.
It looks like he downloaded Kerio Server Firewall. If this is the case, and he did not purchase the firewall, it will expire. This is unlike the Kerio Personal Firewall that goes to a free version after the trial period of using the full version expires. He needs to be aware of this.

Whichever you decide to not use, Uninstall via Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel

If you're not using AOL or the AOL messenger (AIM) you may uninstall them via Add/Remove Programs, also.
If you do decide to remove AOL and/or AIM, please fix the optional HijackThis entries below that are highlighted in blue.

Reboot when finished with Add/Remove Programs

Open HJT and scan. Put a check by these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com

With nothing open except HJT, click on the Fix Checked button.

Once you have finished with the uninstalls and fixed those items in HJT, you will be basically clean. So, here comes my final bit of instructions for you

We need to hide those folders and files again.
Start >>> Control Panel >>> Folder Options >>> View tab

Look for Hidden Files and Folders
*Uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
*check the hide file extensions for known types option.
*check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Apply and Close

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
Make your Internet Explorer more secure -
This can be done by following these simple instructions:

*Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
*Click on Security
*Click the Internet icon
*Click on Custom Level
*Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
*Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
*Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
*Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
*Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
*Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
*Change the Allow paste operations via script to Disable
*Click on OK
*Save (if asked).
*Click on Apply button
*Click on OK
*Close Internet Options

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Update all scanning programs regularly -

Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Mess about online a couple of days, see how the computer behaves. If there is a problem, post back to this thread.

Have a good rest of the weekend:)
