Computer unbelievably slow, menus hanging up!!!

Unread postby ekat261 » June 23rd, 2008, 9:03 pm

I'm not sure why but my computer has gotten incredibly slow over the last few weeks. Also, my start menu, drop downs and other pop type menus have a tendancy to hang up. Here is a copy of the hijack log. Thanks for the advice...

Unread postby flashh4 » June 26th, 2008, 11:20 pm

Howdy ekat261 and welcome to the forums,

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!
In the mean time can you give me an Uninstall list please !!

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Thanks
Chuck

Howdy ekat261,

  1. Please download the latest copy of HijackThis from Trend Micro and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on HJTInstall.exe to install it. Click on Install. By default, it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
  3. Read through the License Agreement presented to you on the next screen and click on I Accept.
  4. Once installed, HijackThis will start automatically. If it doesn't, please go to your desktop and double click on the HijackThis shortcut created there.
  5. Select Do a system scan and save a logfile.
  6. Close HijackThis.

Note: Do not click on the AnalyzeThis button.

Do not fix any lines you see in HijackThis as most entries are harmless and needed for the normal functioning of Windows.

NEXT

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Please post in your next reply:

1. Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) report/log
2. New HJT log

Thanks

Re: Computer unbelievably slow, menus hanging up!!!

Howdy ekat261, yes you did great getting my request !!
Now lets continue looking to solve your problem.

  1. Please download F-Secure Blacklight and save it to C drive.
  2. Click on Start > Run and copy and paste in the following: C:\fsbl.exe /expert. Click OK.
  3. You will be shown a license agreement. Read through it and select I accept the agreement. Click Next.
  4. Click on Scan.
  5. Once the scan is done, close F-Secure Blacklight. Don't rename anything found!
  6. A log will be produced on your C drive. It's named fsbl-XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.log, where the XXXXXXXXXXXXXX are numbers. Please post this log in your next reply.

Thanks
Chuck

OOOOkaaay! I tried this 6 ways from Sunday. Everything goes according to plan until... I hit the scan and it does it's thing. Then, it comes back to the main screen with that says:

Scan Targets:
Hidden Processes
Hidden files and folders

Status:
Scan Complete
No Hidden items found

I click next and it updates to:

Summary:
Hidden items found 0
Items queued for renameing 0

The only next option is to exit the program. I searched and searched and there is not log file to be found. Thanks...

Howdy ekat261,

* Please go to http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partne ... bscan.html and perform an online antivirus scan.
* Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
* It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
* When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
* Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
Archives
Mail databases

* Click on My Computer under Scan.
* Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
* You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
* Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
* Please post this log in your next reply.

Post these in next reply:

1. Kaspersky log/report
2. New HJT log

Thanks
Chuck

Ran the kaspersky scan... Did not go exactly as described, but close enough I think It did say that 0 infections objects were found. The viewable version of the Scan log was blank or empty. Not sure...

Unread postby flashh4 » July 4th, 2008, 2:51 pm

Howdy ekat261,

At this point, I see no evidence of malware on your computer however the DSS scan showed that the computer's memory use is at a very high level. The computer is running Vista with 512MB of RAM, which is the minimum. The more programs you have starting up and running, the more memory will be used, and the more things will slow down. It is recommended that you consider fixing the following entries with HJT. I've provided some information to help you decide.

igfxtray.exe
Part of Intel's Common User Interface for chipsets with integrated graphics controllers - which allows user to change different driver properties through Windows User Interface. Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon however this is also available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

hkcmd.exe
Part of Intel's Common User Interface for chipsets with integrated graphics controllers - which allows user to change different driver properties through Windows User Interface. If the user wishes to have "HotKey" access to Intel's customised graphics properties, it is required, otherwise not.

igfxpers.exe
Part of Intels Common User Interface for chipsets with integrated graphics controllers - which allows user to change different driver properties through Windows User Interface. Not known exactly what it does but apparently it isn't required

SynTPEnh.exe
Synaptics touchpad tray icon. Displays status and provides quick launch to touchpad features such as scrolling and tap zones. Required on IBM Thinkpads with UnltraNav (pointstick and touchpad combo) if you don't want to loose the advanced pointstick features such as scroll

RtHDVCpl.exe
Related to High_Definition_Audio_System driver from Realtek Semiconductor.

Ltmoh.exe
Modem On Hold utility - manages incoming/outgoing voice calls on a single phone line while being connected to the internet

NDSTray.exe
Related to ConfigFree_Traybar utility on Toshiba laptops. It allows you switch between network devices by clicking on the traybar icon.

HWSetup.exe
Related to Toshiba A program to calculate your weeks wages. This program is not important for your system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

SVPWUTIL.exe
Related to Toshiba SVPWUTIL Application. This program is not important for your system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

KeNotify.exe
Related to Toshiba_Flashcard utility. This program is responsible for the Toshiba LapTop Help 'FlashCards' utility that sits at the top of the screen giving easy access to the 'F keys' alternative functions such as Lock,Power Mode,Sleep etc.

HSON.exe
Related to Toshiba_HotStartOn Button Support. Not a critical component.

SmoothView.exe
TOSHIBA Zooming Utility - allows "automatic" zoom feature in some appications, like IE, MS-Office, WMPlayer, Adobe-Reader and also desktop icons.

LXBYtime.dll
Related to Lexmark printers/scanner

Reader_sl.exe
Speeds up the time it takes to load the Adobe_Reader application. Your choice, but not required for Adobe Reader to function properly

qttask.exe
System Tray access to Apple's "Quick Time" viewer from version 5 onwards

DrgToDsc.exe
Part of Roxio EasyCD Creator 6.0 - places the Roxio Drag-to-Disc icon in you system tray. "Easily drag and drop files for burning to CD or DVD. Disc formatting and burning will happen automatically". Not required for Roxio to work properly

ISUSPM.exe
InstallShield Update Service related; Automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software. Not required.

issch.exe
InstallShield Update Service Scheduler; automatically searches for and performs any updates to the software so you’re always working with the most current version. Not required.

realsched.exe
Application Scheduler installed along with RealOne Player. Runs independently of RealOne Player, to remind AutoUpdate and Message Center to perform their tasks at pre-scheduled intervals. If it can't be disabled try deleting or renaming realsched.exe and then delete the entry in the registry

TOSCDSPD.exe
Related to Toshiba_laptop CD/DVD drivers. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference.

LinksysAgent.exe
Related to Linksys configuration utility.

Sidebar.exe
Related to Windows_Sidebar on Vista Operating system.

ShowWelcomeCenter
Shows the Welcome Center every time you boot into Windows Vista

Sidebar.exe
Related to Windows_Sidebar on Vista Operating system.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Please post these:

Howdy ekat261,

:Remove bad HijackThis entries:
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

When you remove those you should be good to go !!

Please now delete dss.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder: >>> C:\Deckard

==========================

Congratulations you are clean!

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. The inexpensive PLUS version is worth it, to give you extra details about the files and processes on your system, and provide incoming protections. You can upgrade from the Free to the PLUS version anytime.

Happy Surfing !!
