Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

Before we begin, I need the answer to the following question:

Is this your computer at home or your computer at your work/business?

Thanks for answering my question. :)

We can now begin working on cleaning up your computer:

Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Besides the Uninstall List, I'd also like to see a fresh HiJackThis Log in your next reply as well.

Re: Malware - Explorer shuts down, pop-ups

Unread postby km2357 » June 27th, 2008, 3:30 pm

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus Vuze

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Step # 1: Disable Teatimer

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Step # 2: Add/Remove Programs

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

Enhancement Browser Tools Adsonmedia

LiveUpdate 2.0 (Symantec Corporation)

Reboot your Computer.

Step # 3: Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step # 4: Remove Hijackthis Entries

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    O2 - BHO: adsonmedia browser optimizer - {e03bbee5-c489-dffb-ceca-14d3c7350c6b} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\{dd9f4fba-4570-6803-cfbf-8b0192d7302d}.dll

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [{2aa3346d-ca06-de49-9df9-6427c4557b69}] C:\WINDOWS\System32\Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\{dd9f4fba-4570-6803-cfbf-8b0192d7302d}.dll" DllStart

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

Step # 5: Deleting Files/Folders

I need you to use Windows Explorer to delete the files/folders I have marked in Red(if found):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\{dd9f4fba-4570-6803-cfbf-8b0192d7302d}.dll

Step # 6 Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Before running a scan, click the Update tab, next click Check for Updates to download any updates, if available.
  • Next click the Scanner tab and select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • You can also access the log by doing the following:
  • Click on the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware icon to launch the program.
  • Click on the Logs tab.
  • Click on the log at the bottom of those listed to highlight it.
  • Click Open.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

I understand the P2P warning and was a bit leary using it. That said, P2P is as much a part of the Internet as a browser so what precautions can one take? Would you suggest any computer protection programs? Or specific P2P venues?

thanks for everything

The best advice I can give concerning P2P is not to use it at all. While the majority of P2P programs can be considered safe in themselves, there is no guarantee that what you download from them will be. If you do decide to use P2P programs in the future, you should scan all the files you download with it using your Anti-Virus programs and you should also scan the file(s)with MalwareBytes' as well.

Step # 1 Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Remove the following old versions of Java:

  • Java(TM) 6 Update 3

    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • From your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Step # 2: Stop some processes with Task Manager
Press Control+Alt+Del to enter the Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes (if present):

HA53A6.EXE <---See Note

TXm040gX.exe

Note: This will more likely than not be random, look for a file named similarly to this one. It'll have 6 random letters and numbers followed by the .exe extension. For example, in your last HJT log, it showed up as KKFEBE.EXE.

Exit the Task Manager when finished.

Step # 3: Deleting Files/Folders

I need you to use Windows Explorer to delete the files/folders I have marked in Red(if found):

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\HA53A6.EXE <--See Note

C:\WINDOWS\system32\TXm040gX.exe

Note: As in Step 2, this file will probably be also be randomly named, look for any .exe files in the Windows\Temp folder that fit the criteria (6 random numbers/letters) and delete them.

Step # 4: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

Thanks so far for being so detailed. I was able to remove the one of the files using Windows Explorer. TXm. That is all, just one. I updated Java. When I went to use Kapersky Explorer closed. Now when I try to run Kapersky I get an error report each time.

I was able to do a HijackThis log:

Now when I try to run Kapersky I get an error report each time.

Do you remember what the error report says?

Let's hold off on Kaspersky for now, we can come back to it later or try a different a online scanner if need be.

Now I'm going to have you run a tool that will look deeper into your computer to see what else malicious maybe hiding on your computer.

Step # 1: Download and Run Deckard's System Scanner

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next post/reply.

Good to see you got Kaspersky to run. :)

To get the extra log for Deckard's, do this:

  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • A configuration box will appear, click the Check All button, then un-check Main Log and press Scan!

Step # 1 Upload Files

Go to Jotti
Copy the following line into the white textbox:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\PTi040cT.dll
Click Submit.
Please post the results of this scan to this thread.

If Jotti is busy, Go to VirusTotal and scan the file(s) there.

Step # 2 Download and Run OTMoveIt2

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    C:\Documents and Settings\adler\Local Settings\Temp\orz.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\adler\Local Settings\Temp\V1E0HilA.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\6FxMsqYy.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\TXm040gX.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\TXm040gX.exe_
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\affv6628p5now.sys

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Deckard's Extra txt
2. Jotti/Virustotal results
3. OTMoveIT2 Log

I must be doing something wrong with Deckard. I run the program off the desktop and it starts to scan automatically, it does not give me any dialog box or options. When the scan is complete a txt file automatically pops up. Here is the latest Deckard txt:
