Computer Problems - Please help :)

I have been experiencing problems with my computer at home. It has been running very slow lately, even though I run virus scans pretty often (once a week) and I also have CA Security Suite installed. The memory on my computer seems to be plenty, but I keep getting messages saying my Virtual Memory (???) is low. Also, my PF Usage (???) indicator looks lijke it is always at 100%, which I imagine is not good.

Attached is a hijackthis log I did. Can you please review and tell me what may be causing these problems?

Hi RachaelK,

I can't see any malware in your HijackThis log, this doesn't mean your machine is clean but it also means I can't yet tell whether malware is the cause of your problems or not. We can have a look over your machine to see if there is malware present, but if it turns out to be not a malware issue I will need to refer you for general troubleshooting help. If this is acceptable to you then please do as follows:

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Blacklight report, the Eset scan log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.
The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

Thanks for your reply and directions. I followed them all, and below are the result postings.

I also googled the virtual memory error I keep getting, and a Microsoft article told me to go in and manually increase the size of my virtual memory paging file. I did that, and restarted the computer so the new settings would take effect (Initial size = 760 MB, Max size = 3040 MB). I then went back to look at the Virtual Mempry settings again, and it looks like I currently have 473 MB currently allocted. However, the next time I logged on to the computer I received the same Virtual Memory Warning message again after about 15 minutes, saying that Windows was going to automatically increase my Virtual Memory settings. Why would it need to do that since I already increased these settings, and have the Virtual Memory setting selected to Custom Size, not System Magaged Size?

Hi RachaelK,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_16
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6) from here

You have a program called Coupon Printer for Windows installed. I recommend you remove this software as it has been identified as using deceptive tactics and as a privacy threat - more information is available here.

Please delete dss.exe and fsbl.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:
C:\Deckard

------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as I can see there is no malware on your machine so I think the problem has other causes.
DSS shows that your Virtual Memory and disk space don't look too bad:
Percentage of Memory in Use: 76%
Physical Memory (total/avail): 253.99 MiB / 59.94 MiB
Pagefile Memory (total/avail): 714.84 MiB / 202.2 MiB
Virtual Memory (total/avail): 2047.88 MiB / 1950.03 MiB
If the problem is caused by a single application then the troubleshooting steps here might be useful.
An upgrade to 512Mb or 1Gb of RAM would provide a major performance boost, so this may be something you wish to consider.

However, as the problem is not malware-related it is probably best for you to seek assistance at a general troubleshooting forum. I recommend you try the Tech Team in the Microsoft Windows forum at What The Tech - the experts there specialize in this type of problem so you will be in good hands.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following are some tips to help you keep your computer clean that I recommend you implement after resolving this problem:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further questions or issues.
